Apply Windows updates as well, because the game depends on the operating system’s graphics and runtime components. After updating, repeat the same API and workload test rather than changing settings at the same time. LevelCache
Larian recommends deleting the contents of the LevelCache folder for relevant corruption problems. Delete the contents rather than the folder itself, then let the game rebuild them on the next launch. Cache rebuilding can make the first load take longer; that delay is different from a repeatable crash at the same point.
Can lowering graphics settings prevent a DirectX crash?
It can help when the failure is triggered by rendering load, memory pressure, or an unstable display mode, although it will not repair damaged files or a bad mod.

Check free space on the SSD, not just the drive’s total capacity. A larger internal SSD can satisfy the 150 GB prerequisite when your current drive is full, but additional storage by itself does not guarantee a DirectX fix. If your GPU has less VRAM or your system has less RAM than the minimum, treat hardware replacement as a separate decision from software troubleshooting.
Which is better for BG3: DirectX 11 or Vulkan?

Use identical resolution, quality, frame cap, and test scene when comparing. A higher frame rate is not an advantage if the API crashes during startup or loading.

Separate a launcher problem from a renderer problem, then test the runtime itself. Start the appropriate executable from bin, try the alternate API, and confirm that overlays and mods are absent.
- Only the launcher fails: Use the direct executable test and note whether the game reaches the main menu.
- Both executables fail immediately: Check drivers, Windows updates, minimum specifications, file verification, and security-software interference.
- The game reaches the menu but crashes loading a save: Test a new game, clear LevelCache, and remove mod residue. A save-specific failure and a universal startup failure provide different evidence.
- A Visual C++ runtime message appears: Repair or install the supported Microsoft Visual C++ redistributable, restart Windows, and repeat the clean launch.
- The crash occurs after changing display settings: Use Windowed or Fake Fullscreen, lower resolution, and cap at 60 FPS before raising settings again.
Do not delete saves as a first response. Preserve the original files while you establish whether a new, unmodded launch behaves differently.

Check temperatures, power connections, and any overclock or undervolt by returning the system to stock settings for the test. If instability continues at stock settings and the Event Viewer module or crash dump points outside the game, include that evidence in a support or hardware-service request rather than repeatedly reinstalling BG3.

Can I use DirectX 11 as a permanent workaround if Vulkan crashes?
