DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL is Windows bug check 0x000000D1. It means a kernel-mode driver tried to read, write, or execute memory that was invalid or pageable while running at an interrupt request level where that memory could not safely be accessed. The quickest reliable path is to capture the stop-screen details, identify the driver named there or in a minidump, then update or roll back that driver. If the name is missing or misleading, analyze the dump with WinDbg before making broader changes.
The error can be triggered by a bad pointer, freed memory, pageable code used at an elevated IRQL, an invalid function pointer, or a call into an unloaded driver. The stop code alone does not prove which driver is responsible, so use the stack, symbols, and loaded-module list to confirm the faulting path.

What does DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (0xD1) mean?
Windows stops with 0xD1 when a kernel driver accesses memory in a way that is illegal at the processor’s current interrupt request level (IRQL). Microsoft describes the usual failure as a driver touching pageable or invalid memory, or using an invalid pointer, while running at an elevated IRQL. The IRQL number is part of the evidence, but the memory reference is often the real problem.
The four bug-check parameters
The blue screen and debugger report four hexadecimal parameters. Read them together rather than treating any one value as a verdict.

| Parameter | What it represents | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | The memory address that was referenced | Inspect whether the address is valid, freed, or pageable. |
| 2 | The IRQL at the time of the reference | Confirms the execution level at which the access occurred. |
| 3 | The type of operation | Indicates whether the instruction attempted a read, write, or execute operation. |
| 4 | The address of the instruction that made the reference | Resolve it to the nearest symbol with ln and compare it with the stack and module list. |
Why the driver printed on the blue screen is only a lead
Windows may display a .sys filename or store the suspected name in KiBugCheckDriver. That name is useful, but it can be a caller, a component on the failing path, or a victim of memory corruption rather than the original cause. Confirm it with symbols, the call stack, and the loaded-module list. A report that mentions ntoskrnl.exe usually identifies the Windows kernel context; it does not, by itself, establish that the kernel is defective.
What should I do immediately after a 0xD1 crash?
Start with evidence and reversible changes. Do not delete the dump or install several unrelated driver packages before you know which change helped.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Record the stop screen. Photograph or copy the exact stop-code text, any
.sysfilename, and all four hexadecimal parameters. Also note what the computer was doing and whether a driver or hardware device had just been installed. - Preserve the small dump. Windows normally writes small crash dumps to
%SystemRoot%Minidump. Copy the files to another folder or drive and keep several dumps if the crash repeats; recurring modules and changing parameters can distinguish a consistent driver fault from a one-off failure. - Check Event Viewer. Open Event Viewer, expand Windows Logs, choose System, and inspect events at the crash time. Look for driver-service failures, device resets, or installation events that occurred immediately before the bug check.
- Check Windows Update. Install applicable quality, security, and hardware-driver updates, then restart. If the crash began immediately after a Windows or driver update, record that timing before changing anything else.
- Update the identified driver from the device or PC maker. Use the support page for the exact computer model or device. Match the package to the installed Windows edition and architecture. Avoid mixing generic packages from unrelated models.
- Roll back a recently changed driver. In Device Manager, open the affected device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and choose Roll Back Driver when the option is available. Restart and test the activity that previously triggered the crash.
- Check newly installed hardware. Confirm that a recently added adapter, graphics card, storage controller, printer, or other device is supported by the installed Windows version. Temporarily disconnecting a new device can help establish whether the timing is causal; follow the manufacturer’s safe-removal instructions.
After each change, test long enough to see whether the original workload reproduces the failure. Keep a short log of the driver version, date, device, and result so you can undo an unsuccessful change.
How do I identify the faulty driver from a minidump?
When routine updates and rollbacks do not isolate the problem, use WinDbg to read the dump. This is more reliable than selecting a driver solely because its filename appears in a summary line.

Open the dump and run the first analysis
- Install and open WinDbg, then choose the option to open a crash dump and select a copy from your preserved
Minidumpfolder. - Allow symbols to load. In the command window, run
!analyze -v(or!analyzefor a shorter report). - Read the bug-check summary, the four parameters, the value of
KiBugCheckDriverif present, and the reported stack. Treat a named third-party module as a candidate until the rest of the evidence supports it.
Resolve the instruction address
Use ln with parameter 4 to find the nearest symbol, for example ln fffff800`12345678 after replacing the address with the value from your dump. A symbol that resolves inside a third-party module is more informative than a generic kernel address, but it still needs to agree with the call stack.
Inspect the call stack
Display the stack with one of the following commands: k, kb, kc, kd, kp, kP, or kv. Look for a consistent third-party driver in the frames leading to the fault. Compare the stack from more than one dump when available; a module that recurs at the same point is a stronger lead than one that appears only once.

Run lm t n to list loaded modules with timestamps and names. If the address or pointer remains unclear, WinDbg also provides !pool, !address, memory-display commands, and u, ub, or uu to inspect instructions around the reference. Do not “fix” a dump by deleting or renaming a module. The purpose of analysis is to identify the driver package or hardware relationship so that you can update, roll back, remove, or replace it through a supported path.
How can I use Driver Verifier without making the crash worse?
Driver Verifier is built into Windows and checks driver behavior in real time. It is an advanced diagnostic, not a first repair step: its checks add overhead and can deliberately expose a fault by causing another stop. Use it only after ordinary updates, rollbacks, compatibility checks, and dump collection have failed to isolate a persistent problem.
Select the smallest possible driver set
- Save current dumps and write down the drivers you intend to test, including their provider and file names.
- Open the Start menu, type Verifier, and run the Driver Verifier Manager with administrator rights.
- Choose the option to create standard settings, then select drivers by name rather than verifying every driver. Target the smallest set that your dump analysis or recent hardware changes implicate.
- Restart and use the computer normally or repeat the workload that triggers the crash. The resulting dump can reveal which selected driver failed a verification check.
Because verification adds system overhead, the computer may feel less responsive while it is active. If Windows cannot start normally after enabling it, enter Windows Recovery Environment or Safe Mode and disable Driver Verifier from an elevated Command Prompt with verifier /reset, then restart. Do not leave a broad verification set enabled after the diagnostic run.
What if Windows crashes before I can reach the desktop?
Use the recovery environment to regain a stable boot, then return to evidence collection instead of repeatedly forcing normal startup.

- From the automatic-repair screen, choose Advanced options and then Startup Settings to try Safe Mode. Safe Mode loads fewer third-party drivers, which can help you remove or roll back a recently changed package.
- In Safe Mode, copy the files from
%SystemRoot%Minidump, review Event Viewer if available, and use Device Manager to roll back the suspected device driver. - If the crash began directly after a driver installation, use Apps or the device manufacturer’s uninstaller where appropriate, then restart and install a known-compatible version.
- If Safe Mode also crashes, return to WinDbg analysis from another computer using the preserved dump. Avoid repeatedly booting with Driver Verifier active; reset it from recovery if necessary.
These steps address the driver state that prevents startup; they do not prove that the underlying device is permanently defective. Re-test after each change and retain the original dump for comparison.
Which 0xD1 troubleshooting method should I choose?
The right method depends on whether you have a clear recent change and whether a usable dump exists.

|---|---|---|---|
| Event Viewer, Windows Update, manufacturer update or rollback, and compatibility checks | A first crash, a clearly timed driver change, or a named device | Lowest intervention risk and easiest to reverse | May not identify an intermittent or indirect cause |
| WinDbg dump analysis | A preserved minidump, an ambiguous filename, or repeated crashes | Shows parameters, symbols, stack frames, and loaded modules | Requires correct symbols and technical interpretation |
| Targeted Driver Verifier | A persistent, reproducible crash after routine fixes | Exercises selected drivers and can expose violations in real time | Adds overhead and may trigger additional blue screens |
Do not jump to Driver Verifier simply because a dump names a Windows component. First establish whether a third-party driver, a recent update, or new hardware fits the timing and stack evidence.

Once a driver is identified, document the working version and the device it belongs to. Keep the original package available in case a later update reintroduces the issue, and create a fresh restore point or other recovery option before changing a stable system.

- Record the driver provider, version, date, and installation source.
- Keep multiple minidumps until the system has remained stable through the workload that previously caused the crash.
- Install only the package intended for the exact device and Windows version.
- When a new device is involved, verify support before reconnecting it.
- If the crash returns, compare the new dump with the earlier one instead of assuming the same module is automatically guilty.
There is no supported prevalence or success-rate figure that predicts which brand or class of driver causes 0xD1. Diagnosis depends on the individual dump, stack, module list, and change history.
As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices for outdated, corrupted or missing drivers, install only official drivers, show current and recommended versions, and provide driver backup, restore, and scheduled scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 and offers a 2-day free trial with no credit card before subscription; results vary and it does not repair every crash.
What should I do if the crash stops after an update?
Keep the dump, the old driver version, and your change log even after the computer appears stable. A later recurrence can then be compared against the original failure, and you can roll back to the known-working package if the same workload triggers 0xD1 again.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I delete old minidump files after Windows starts normally?
Archive them rather than deleting them immediately. Keeping the original files lets you compare a later crash with the first failure and preserves evidence if the suspected driver name changes.
Should I verify every driver with Driver Verifier?
No. Verifying every driver adds unnecessary overhead and makes the resulting dump harder to interpret. Select the smallest set supported by your dump, hardware history, or recent driver change, and reset verification when the diagnostic run is complete.
Why does a 0xD1 crash sometimes name a Windows system file?
A system-file name can identify the kernel context or the point where corrupted state was detected. The responsible third-party driver may be earlier in the stack, so confirm the path with symbols, stack frames, and the loaded-module list.
Is one DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL crash enough to replace hardware?
Not by itself. First check the driver package, update or rollback timing, and compatibility of recently installed hardware. Replacement becomes a separate decision only after the software and dump evidence point to a persistent device problem.
