If Windows says “icudt62.dll was not found,” the missing file usually belongs to the game or application that is starting—not to Windows itself. The safest fix is to identify that program, run its built-in Repair or Verify command, and reinstall it from the publisher’s official installer or the Microsoft Store if repair does not restore the file. Do not download a loose DLL, place it in System32 or SysWOW64, or run regsvr32 on it.
The exact application matters because different vendors can package different ICU builds, architectures and dependent files. The same advice applies to messages such as “The code execution cannot proceed because icudt62.dll was not found” and “The specified module could not be found,” although the latter can mean that another dependency is missing even when the named file is present.

icudt62.dll is normally an ICU data file shipped privately with a third-party program. ICU is the internationalization library used by many software companies to provide Unicode, locale, date, number and text-processing data. ICU 62 added Unicode 11 and CLDR 33.1 locale data. The ICU project lists 62.1 as the initial ICU 62 library release in 2018 and 62.2 as the later ICU4C maintenance release, published on April 11, 2019.
The number in the filename identifies the ICU data generation; it is not a Windows version number. A game may need that particular generation because its executable and other ICU files were built and tested together. Replacing it with a file from another release can leave the program with incompatible locale data or unresolved dependencies.

Most installations keep the file beside the game executable or inside a private runtime folder. Windows therefore cannot reliably repair it through a system-file operation. Restoring the parent application’s complete file set is safer than importing one DLL from an unrelated source.
What do the different icudt62.dll messages mean?
The wording narrows the diagnosis but does not identify the correct download. Treat the message as evidence that the application’s installation is incomplete or that one of its dependencies cannot be loaded.
- “icudt62.dll was not found” or “The code execution cannot proceed…” usually means the application cannot locate the file it expects.
- “The specified module could not be found” can mean the named file exists but a second DLL or runtime required by it is absent, blocked or the wrong architecture.
- An error that appears only after an update often indicates a failed, interrupted or partially rolled-back application update.
- An error that appears at Windows sign-in after you removed a game can come from a leftover startup entry or scheduled task still pointing at the old installation.
How should I identify the application before changing anything?
Do this first. The owning application determines which repair command, installer and architecture are appropriate.
- Read the entire dialog, including the program name and the path shown in any expanded details. Take a screenshot or copy the text exactly.
- Note when it appears: while launching a game, after an update, at sign-in, or when opening a particular file. The timing often identifies the parent program.
- If Windows names only an executable, open Task Manager when the error is visible, right-click the related process and choose Open file location. Do not delete anything from that folder; use the path to identify the installed product.
- Check whether the program came from a publisher installer, a game launcher or the Microsoft Store. Use the same channel for repair or reinstallation where possible.
- Record whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit, but do not choose a runtime solely from Windows bitness. The executable’s target architecture is what matters.
If you cannot determine the program, search the full error text in your own installed-app list and inspect recently installed or updated software. Do not guess at a DLL source while the owner remains unknown.

How do I repair the game or app without reinstalling it?
A built-in repair or file-verification operation is the least disruptive option because it can replace missing files while retaining saves and settings. Labels differ by product.
Use Windows installed-app repair when it is available
- Open Settings and select Apps, then Installed apps (Windows 11) or Apps & features (Windows 10).
- Find the application, select its three-dot menu or entry, and choose Advanced options if that link is offered.
- Select Repair and wait for Windows to finish. The button is not present for every desktop program.
- Start the application again. If the same message remains, return to the entry and use Reset only after checking what data the app stores locally; Reset can remove settings or locally stored content.
Use a launcher’s verify or scan command
Open the launcher that installed the game and select the game’s management, properties or installation menu. Look for labels such as Verify files, Scan and repair, Repair or Verify integrity. Let the process complete before launching the game. A verification operation normally compares the installed files with the publisher’s manifest and downloads replacements; it does not require a random DLL download.

Use the publisher installer’s repair option
Some desktop installers expose Repair when you run the original setup program. If the installer asks whether to modify, repair or remove the product, choose repair and keep the existing installation directory unless the vendor specifically instructs otherwise.
When should I reinstall the application?
Reinstall when no repair or verify command exists, when verification reports files it cannot replace, or when the installation directory was manually moved or cleaned. Reinstalling the parent program restores its matching ICU file and related dependencies as a set.

- Back up saves, profiles, mods and configuration files according to the publisher’s documentation. Cloud synchronization is not universal, and uninstallers can remove local data.
- Sign out of the game or app and close its launcher. In Task Manager, confirm that its processes have ended.
- Uninstall it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps or from the publisher’s uninstaller. Avoid deleting unrelated folders that happen to contain similarly named files.
- Restart Windows if the uninstaller requests it or if the old program remains listed as running.
- Download the current installer from the publisher’s official support or download page, or reinstall from the Microsoft Store account that owns the app. Do not use a third-party DLL archive.
- Install to the default location unless the publisher documents another path. Allow the installer to complete all prerequisite components and updates.
- Launch the program before restoring optional mods or injected overlays. If it works in a clean state, add custom components one at a time.
If you bought the product through a launcher, reinstall through that launcher rather than mixing a Store package with a vendor package. They can use different directories, update channels and entitlement checks.
Should I check antivirus quarantine or blocked files?
Yes, but verify the application first. Open your security software’s protection history or quarantine and look for an entry that names icudt62.dll or the parent application. Confirm that the file was in the publisher’s genuine installation path and that the publisher is trusted before taking any action.

Only investigate a Visual C++ runtime when the error names that runtime, an entry-point failure, or another missing runtime component. The redistributable supplies C and C++ runtime libraries; it is not a general replacement for an application’s ICU data file.

- Read the complete error and the application’s support instructions to determine whether a Visual C++ package is actually required.
- Download the current redistributable package from Microsoft, not from a DLL download site.
- Choose the package whose architecture matches the application executable. Microsoft’s guidance is that “the redistributable package architecture must match your app’s target architecture.” A 64-bit Windows installation can still run a 32-bit game that needs the x86 package.
- Run the installer and restart the application. Do not install every architecture at random as a substitute for identifying the program.
If the redistributable installer fails, Microsoft recommends using the latest package, collecting its failure logs and applying the documented remedy for the specific error. The application vendor may also provide a required runtime version or installation order.
What if the error says the specified module could not be found?
That wording can describe a dependency failure rather than a missing icudt62.dll itself. After repair or reinstall, check whether the application’s own folder contains the file and whether security software blocked another file in the same installation.
Do not copy individual DLLs from another game or computer. - Open Settings > Apps > Startup (or Task Manager > Startup apps) and look for an entry matching the removed product.
- Open Task Scheduler, review the task library and inspect any task whose action points to the old installation directory. Disable or delete it only when you have verified its owner and purpose.
- Check the publisher’s uninstaller or support instructions for a cleanup utility. Avoid deleting arbitrary registry entries or system files.
- Restart Windows and confirm that the message no longer appears.

What should I avoid when fixing icudt62.dll?
- Random DLL download sites: the file may be malicious, the wrong architecture or a different ICU build.
- System-folder copying: placing an application-private data file in

Mention whether security software quarantined a file and whether the failure began after an update, migration or uninstall. This is more useful than reporting only that “a DLL is missing,” because the vendor can identify the specific ICU package and dependency chain.

Can I download icudt62.dll by itself?
That is not a safe or reliable repair. The file is tied to the application’s ICU build, architecture and neighboring files, so obtain it through the application’s verified repair process or official installer instead.
