“The interface is unknown” is not one Windows problem with one universal repair. When the message includes 0x000006B5, Microsoft identifies it as RPC_S_UNKNOWN_IF, meaning the requested RPC interface is unknown. A different scenario, Quest Spotlight remote monitoring, reports similar wording with HRESULT 0x800706B5 and ties it to a Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) access problem.
Start by recording the complete message, its numeric code or HRESULT, the application or service that produced it, and whether the failed operation is local or remote. Only then choose the matching diagnostic path. The steps below focus on identifying the context and testing WMI access without making risky, unsupported registry, service, DCOM or security changes.

What does “The interface is unknown” mean?

Why can the same wording have different causes?
Windows applications often display a system error description supplied by an underlying component. The wording can therefore be identical while the calling program, code format and operation differ.

How do I capture the information needed to choose a fix?
Do this before changing Windows settings. The complete context determines whether the RPC definition or the WMI procedure is relevant.
- Reproduce the error and copy the entire message exactly as shown. Include hexadecimal and decimal values, an HRESULT, and any text naming a host, namespace or service.
- Write down the application or Windows service that displayed it. If it appeared while starting a game, launcher or monitoring utility, record that product and the specific action that failed.

Run the monitoring host’s WMI query
- Sign in to the computer acting as the monitoring or Diagnostic Server.
- Open a command prompt in the same account context used for the monitoring test.
- Run the documented query, replacing
<server>with the monitored computer name:wmic /node: <server> path Win32_PerfRawData_PerfNet_ServerWorkQueues - Record whether the command returns WMI data or an access/connection error. A failed query shows that this test path cannot reach or query the target under the conditions used; it does not, by itself, identify which Windows setting is responsible.
Run the command from the Diagnostic Server, not from an unrelated workstation. Confirm that the host name is the same one configured in the monitoring product and that the account is the intended one before interpreting the result.

How do I test a remote WMI namespace with WBEMTEST?

What should I do when the WMI tests fail or disagree?
Both the command and WBEMTEST fail
Treat this as a remote WMI connectivity or access problem in the tested context. Recheck the target computer name, namespace spelling, domain or workgroup relationship and the account supplied for the test. Then use the monitoring product’s support documentation, because the available guidance does not establish one universal Windows repair for every WMI failure.
The command succeeds but the monitoring product still fails

The code is missing or does not match either documented value
Stop before running repair scripts. A different HRESULT may belong to a different subsystem, and the phrase by itself is insufficient to select a safe fix.
Should I change the registry, DCOM, services or security settings?
Not based on this wording alone. The documented evidence supports collecting the exact code and application context and, for a specific remote-monitoring case, testing WMI access. Does the older Windows 7 licensing example apply today?
Microsoft Q&A includes a legacy Windows 7 report involving Nalpeiron Licensing Services and error 1717. That case contains proposed steps for that historical product and operating-system context; it does not establish a current fix for games, launchers or other Windows applications.
If your message comes from an old licensing service, use the service vendor’s documentation for the exact release you run. Do not transplant legacy commands into a different application merely because both messages contain the words “interface is unknown.”
