For a recurring Xbox matchmaking case, Bungie asked players to submit video or screenshots rather than offering a fix.
First, identify when Marathon goes black
Note the platform and the point where the problem occurs. Also check whether the console itself freezes or whether only the game display stops responding. Bungie’s official reports describe distinct cases, so a map-loading patch note should not be treated as a fix for every launch, resume, matchmaking, or crash symptom.

In a March 23, 2026 response to a PS5 launch-after-suspension report, Bungie Support recommended these steps. Try them in order, and check whether the issue returns after each one.
- Fully power down the PS5. Do not use Rest Mode. Wait 30 seconds, then start the console again.
- Check for PS5 system software updates and install any available update.
- Rebuild the database in Safe Mode. Follow the PS5 Safe Mode instructions for that console; this is a console maintenance step, not a Marathon in-game setting.
- Reinstall Marathon if the black screen continues.
- Clear the console cache using Bungie Support’s linked guidance in its response.
- Check that the console has good ventilation. Bungie Support notes overheating can trigger safety shutdowns that resemble crashes, but its response does not establish overheating as the cause of the reported black screen.
The steps above come from Bungie Support’s response to a player report dated March 22, 2026. They are PS5-specific guidance; the cited response does not prescribe them for Xbox or PC.

Xbox Series X: report a recurring matchmaking black screen
For the Xbox Series X case reported on March 8, 2026, Bungie Support’s March 10 reply asked the player to capture a video using the platform’s recording feature if the problem happened again, then share the video or screenshots in the report thread. The reply did not provide a troubleshooting fix or confirm a resolution. See the Bungie Support report and response.
Extended black screen during map loading: check the update
The Marathon Dev Team’s Update 1.0.0.4 notes, published March 11, 2026, state: “Players will no longer see an extended black screen during the map load sequence.” This is a specific patch-note fix for an extended black screen during map loading. It does not establish that other black-screen symptoms—such as launch/resume failures, matchmaking issues, or crashes—are fixed.

If the problem continues
Record the platform, when the screen turns black, whether audio continues, and whether inputs or the console still respond. For the Xbox matchmaking report, Bungie specifically requested video or screenshots if it recurred. For other persistent symptoms, use Bungie’s support channels to report the details rather than assuming a fix documented for a different stage or platform applies.
