When Steam shows “An error has occurred while installing (missing app configuration)”, completely exit Steam, delete C:Program Files (x86)Steamappcacheappinfo.vdf, relaunch Steam, and try the installation again. Steam should rebuild the cache file when it starts. If the message remains, install any available Steam client update, then contact the game’s publisher or Steam Support with the steps you already tried.
This is an installation or downloadable-content metadata failure, not a graphics-setting problem. The cache reset is the least disruptive documented fix, but the exact cause can differ between games, Steam builds, and Windows installations.

What does the “missing app configuration” error mean?
The message appears while Steam is installing a game and can also appear during a DLC installation. Steam is failing to read or obtain configuration information needed to identify the app or content being installed. The result may be shown as missing app configuration, Steam app configuration missing or not available, or the longer message An error has occurred while installing (missing app configuration).
A damaged or unreadable appinfo.vdf file in Steam’s appcache folder is a common explanation. A Steam client bug introduced by an update is another possibility. Those are useful troubleshooting hypotheses, not a guaranteed diagnosis for every title, account, operating system, or client build.

The error does not, by itself, indicate a failing graphics card, insufficient storage hardware, or a need to buy a Steam gift card, physical edition, new SSD, or USB recovery drive. The first repair changes one Steam cache file and leaves the game library untouched.
How do I fix the missing app configuration error on Steam?

Exit Steam completely
Close the Steam window, then make sure the client is no longer running in the background. If Steam is still active, it can keep
appinfo.vdfopen or recreate the old data while you are trying to remove it. On Windows, check the notification area and Task Manager before continuing. -
Open Steam’s appcache folder
In File Explorer, go to
C:Program Files (x86)Steamappcache. The file you need isappinfo.vdf. Do not delete the entire Steam folder or a game’s installation directory; the documented repair targets this single cache file. -
Delete appinfo.vdf
Remove
appinfo.vdf. If Windows reports that the file is in use, return to the first step and close every Steam process before trying again. Restart Steam and retry
Launch Steam normally. The client can recreate the cache file as it starts and refreshes its app metadata. Retry the same game or DLC installation that produced the error rather than starting with an unrelated title, so you can tell whether the reset solved the original failure.

Note whether the installation begins, fails at the same point, or displays a different error. That information is useful if you need to escalate the problem, especially when the original wording was missing app configuration.
What if Steam is installed in a different folder?
C:Program Files (x86)Steam is the path specified in the documented Windows fix, but Steam can be installed elsewhere. The important structure is the Steam installation directory followed by appcacheappinfo.vdf.

Can the error happen when installing DLC?
Yes. The same message can appear while installing downloadable content, because Steam must load app and package metadata for DLC as well as for a full game. - Check for an update: install any available Steam client update, restart, and retry.
- Capture the exact wording: record whether Steam says “missing app configuration,” “missing or not available,” or shows another code after the restart.

- The complete on-screen error, including whether it says missing app configuration or missing or not available.
- The game or DLC name and whether the base game installs correctly.
