Check the matching case below, then load a separate save from before its listed trigger if needed.
Serana is stuck in combat
During Dawnguard, Bethesda’s workaround is to load a save from before Serana entered combat. Before leaving the area, defeat all enemies. If the problem began after friendly vampires at Castle Volkihar accidentally hit her, return to an earlier save and avoid having allied vampires strike Serana.
Serana is behind a closed gate in Ancestor Glade
In Unseen Visions, this can happen if you tell Serana to wait near the start of Ancestor Glade. Load a save from before you find the Moth Priest’s knife, then have her follow you again. A save from after finding the knife may be too late for this specific workaround.
Serana no longer has the option to follow
Between Beyond Death and Touching the Sky, the follow option may disappear if you told Serana to wait. You can either load a save from before Beyond Death and tell her to follow, or continue through the story until Touching the Sky is complete. Bethesda says Serana still appears at quest locations when needed.

The Soul Cairn portal will not open
In Chasing Echoes, the portal can fail if you leave while Serana is partway through opening it. Load a save from before she starts the animation, and stay in the area until the quest updates. Bethesda’s instruction is to “stay until the quest updates.”
Unseen Visions stops progressing after you attack Serana
In Ancestor Glade, Serana may continue attacking after she has been knocked down. Bethesda’s workaround is to load a save from before the incident and avoid attacking her.

The game crashes if you talk to Serana during Harkon’s banishment
In Bloodline, the crash risk occurs in the brief interval after Harkon’s conversation but before you are banished from Castle Volkihar. Load a save from before that point and let the scene finish before speaking to Serana.

Start with Bethesda’s Skyrim Special Edition stuck-quest guidance: check the quest log and map markers if you are unsure of the objective, explore another area and return if an NPC seems stuck or missing, and reload an earlier save if the quest appears broken. Bethesda’s advice is: “If you believe the quest is broken, you should reload an earlier save and try again.” You can also use Bethesda Support’s ticket option to report a persistent Skyrim Special Edition bug.
