STATUS_INVALID_IMAGE_HASH in Chrome is usually a Windows renderer-process integrity failure, not a broken JPEG or PNG on the page. Chromium maps the message to Windows status 0xC0000428 and treats it as an abnormal renderer exit, which can leave a tab showing “Aw, Snap!”. The safest approach is to restart and update Chrome and Windows, isolate extensions and security software, check management policy, and only then consider a temporary renderer-code-integrity change. Keep Chrome’s sandbox and renderer integrity protections enabled unless a controlled test proves that compatible software requires otherwise.

What does STATUS_INVALID_IMAGE_HASH mean in Chrome?

The message refers to executable-code validation inside a Chrome renderer process. It does not normally mean that an image file on the website has an invalid hash or that a page contains a corrupt PNG or JPEG.

On Windows, STATUS_INVALID_IMAGE_HASH is status 0xC0000428 (decimal -1073740760). Chromium’s Windows browser tests use that exit code for a renderer integrity failure; the affected tab is then marked as crashed. Chromium’s sandbox tests also show that a forced Microsoft-signed-binary mitigation rejects an inappropriately signed DLL with ERROR_INVALID_IMAGE_HASH.

In practical terms, Chrome tried to start or continue a renderer and Windows rejected a module loaded into that process. The module may come from legitimate security or compatibility software, an extension-related component, a damaged installation, unwanted software, or a browser-management conflict. The error text alone cannot identify which one is responsible.

Why is Chrome showing the error?

Chrome’s renderer code integrity control is enabled by default. Google describes it as a protection that prevents unknown and potentially hostile code from loading inside Chrome renderer processes. A DLL that Chrome or Windows cannot validate can therefore terminate the renderer even when the website itself is harmless.

Common hypotheses include:

  • Third-party antivirus or endpoint software: security products may integrate with browser processes or inject modules that are incompatible with the current Chrome or Windows build.
  • Compatibility layers and other injected software: screen tools, accessibility utilities, overlays, traffic filters, and similar components can load code into a renderer.
  • Extensions or damaged browser state: an extension, cached page state, or a corrupted profile component can make a failure appear on one site.
  • Managed policy: a work or school administrator may enforce renderer-integrity settings or endpoint rules that interact badly with installed software.
  • Damaged or unwanted software: a broken Chrome installation or an unwanted module can continue to fail after ordinary page troubleshooting.

These are troubleshooting possibilities, not a universal diagnosis. There is no reliable prevalence statistic establishing that one cause accounts for most cases.

What should I check before changing security settings?

First capture the pattern. The scope of the failure determines which tests are most informative and prevents you from weakening Chrome unnecessarily.

Record the failure scope

  • Note whether Chrome itself opens and only a tab crashes, or whether the browser fails during startup.
  • Test more than one unrelated website. If every site fails, suspect startup, policy, injected software, or a system-wide compatibility problem. If one site fails, start with browser state, extensions, and cache.
  • Record the Windows edition and version, Chrome version, approximate time of each failure, and whether the computer is managed by an employer or school.

Preserve evidence

Write down the exact wording and any accompanying error code before making changes. If an administrator or security vendor needs to investigate, the scope, versions, and timestamps are more useful than a screenshot of the page alone.

How do I fix STATUS_INVALID_IMAGE_HASH safely?

Use the following order. It starts with reversible checks and postpones policy or installation changes until you have more evidence.

1. Fully exit Chrome and restart Windows

Close every Chrome window, confirm that Chrome is no longer running, and restart Windows. A clean restart can remove a transient renderer or injected-module state. Re-test the same page after the desktop returns.

2. Install pending Chrome and Windows updates

Apply available Chrome updates and all relevant Windows updates, then restart again if either installer requests it. Browser and endpoint components must be compatible with the same operating-system build; testing an old browser against a newly updated security component can produce misleading results.

3. Test with extensions isolated

Open an Incognito window and visit the failing site. If the problem does not occur there, disable extensions in the regular profile and re-enable them one at a time until the failure returns. This is a diagnostic isolation test, not proof that the last extension enabled is malicious.

For a page-specific failure, clear Chrome’s cached data and reload. Clearing cache is reversible in the sense that Chrome can rebuild it, but it may remove locally cached site resources and require a site to load again from the network.

4. Check third-party security software

Update antivirus, endpoint protection, web filtering, and similar software. Look for a Chrome or browser-integration component in that product’s settings and logs. If your organization permits it, perform a short, controlled test with the integration disabled—not with protection abandoned—and restore protection immediately afterward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat a successful test as permission to leave security software disabled. Instead, give the vendor or administrator the Chrome version, Windows version, failure scope, and the time of the test so they can provide a compatible update or exclusion.

5. Review Chrome management policy

In Chrome, open chrome://policy and inspect the policies applied to the browser. Google documents that policies can apply to signed-in users or enrolled browsers, and that renderer-code-integrity policy is available for Chrome on Windows, Mac, and Linux.

On a work or school computer, do not edit policy or the registry without authorization. Ask the administrator to check whether endpoint-injection rules, application-control rules, or a renderer-code-integrity setting changed shortly before the failures began.

6. Use the renderer-code-integrity setting only as a temporary diagnostic

Google’s documented default is that Renderer code integrity enabled is selected. The setting blocks unknown and potentially hostile code from loading in renderer processes. Google warns that selecting Renderer code integrity disabled can affect Chrome security and stability, and recommends leaving it enabled unless third-party software must run inside Chrome renderer processes and causes a compatibility problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A secondary troubleshooting guide describes setting the Windows policy value RendererCodeIntegrityEnabled to 0 under Chrome’s policy registry area. Because registry paths and policy ownership can differ by installation and management method, use the exact path supplied by your administrator or the software vendor rather than guessing. Back up the relevant registry state, change it only long enough to test, and restore the default immediately after the test.

If the error disappears only while the setting is disabled, that result identifies a compatibility interaction; it does not repair the incompatible module. Update, remove, or reconfigure the software that needs to inject code, then turn renderer code integrity back on.

7. Do not make --no-sandbox a normal fix

Some third-party guides suggest launching Chrome with --no-sandbox. That weakens one of Chrome’s core defenses and should not be a permanent workaround. Avoid distributing such a shortcut to other users, and seek vendor-supported repair or administrator guidance instead.

8. Repair or reinstall after the compatibility checks

If the failure persists with extensions isolated, security software updated, and policy reviewed, use Chrome’s supported repair or reinstall process. Scan Windows for unwanted software as part of the same investigation. Reinstalling may not help when a managed policy or injected DLL is the real cause, so document the earlier tests before you erase the existing installation.

Which troubleshooting option should I choose?

The table compares the practical trade-offs. A diagnostic step that is easy to undo should come before a change that reduces protection or requires administrator authority.

Option Reversibility Security impact Administrative scope Diagnostic value
Restart Chrome or Windows Immediate and easy to undo Preserves protections Usually none Shows whether the failure was transient
Incognito test, extension disable, or cache clearing Easy to reverse; cache rebuilds Preserves renderer integrity and sandbox Usually none Helps isolate profile, extension, or page-state causes
Update antivirus or endpoint software Reversible through the product’s normal update or configuration controls Preserves protection when integrations remain enabled May require security-team approval Tests compatibility between injected modules and Chrome
Review chrome://policy Viewing is non-invasive No change by itself Policy changes may require IT Shows whether the browser is managed and which settings are enforced
Disable renderer code integrity temporarily Reversible, but requires a controlled rollback Can reduce Chrome security and stability Often requires administrator authority Confirms that a renderer-loaded module conflicts with integrity checks
Launch with --no-sandbox Reversible by removing the shortcut Weakens sandbox protection May be available to a local user, but should not be used as routine support Low-quality confirmation because it changes a broad security boundary
Repair or reinstall Chrome More invasive; profile and installation state must be preserved Restores browser files but does not remove an external injected module May require local or administrator rights Useful after cleaner causes have been excluded

How can I tell whether the problem is site-specific or system-wide?

A single-site failure generally justifies starting with Incognito, extension isolation, and cache clearing for that profile. Capture whether the same account and page fail in another Chrome profile if one is already available, but avoid creating many new profiles before recording the original evidence.

If unrelated sites crash, or Chrome fails before a page loads, prioritize updates, security-software compatibility, and policy review. A renderer integrity failure that follows every site is less consistent with one website’s ordinary image data and more consistent with a component loaded into many renderer processes.

If the problem appears only after a security product, compatibility utility, or browser update, preserve the before-and-after versions and provide them to the responsible administrator or vendor. Timing is useful evidence even when it does not prove causation.

What should administrators check on managed Windows devices?

Administrators should review the policies shown in chrome://policy, confirm whether the browser is enrolled, and compare the effective renderer-code-integrity setting with the organization’s endpoint-injection rules. They should also check whether antivirus, application-control, or accessibility software recently changed its browser integration.

Any exception should be scoped to the affected device or software, documented, time-limited, and followed by a retest with renderer integrity enabled. A policy change that fixes one workstation while silently lowering protection for an entire fleet is not an adequate resolution.

When is reinstalling Chrome actually appropriate?

Reinstall after the reversible checks and compatibility review fail, especially when Chrome files appear damaged or the error survives a clean profile. Preserve needed profile data according to your organization’s procedures before removing the installation.

Do not assume that reinstalling removes a third-party DLL, managed policy, or endpoint rule. If the same error returns immediately after reinstall, stop repeating the installer and focus on injected software, policy, and Windows integrity checks with an administrator.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the safest long-term resolution?

The durable fix is to identify and update, remove, or reconfigure the module that cannot pass renderer integrity validation, while keeping renderer code integrity and the Chrome sandbox enabled. A policy toggle can confirm the interaction, but it does not make an incompatible DLL safe.

Keep a short record of the working Chrome and Windows versions, the security products installed, policy changes, and the exact test that changed the outcome. That record lets an administrator or vendor reproduce the condition without leaving a weakened browser configuration in place.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can STATUS_INVALID_IMAGE_HASH crash the whole computer?

The Chromium behavior documented for this code is a renderer process exiting abnormally, which normally marks the affected tab as crashed. A system-wide restart or blue-screen is a different Windows failure and should be investigated separately rather than attributed to this Chrome message alone.

Why does the error appear after an antivirus update?

An antivirus update can change the DLL or browser-integration component loaded into Chrome’s renderer. Compare the product and Chrome versions before and after the change, then ask the security vendor or administrator for a compatible update instead of leaving protection disabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What information should I send to my IT administrator?

Include the exact error text, Windows and Chrome versions, whether one site or all sites fail, whether Incognito changes the result, the time the problem began, and the policies visible at chrome://policy. Mention any recent antivirus, endpoint, extension, or Windows changes.

Will clearing Chrome’s cache delete my saved passwords?

Cache clearing removes temporary web resources, not the separately stored password data. Use Chrome’s data-clearing controls carefully and confirm that you are selecting cached files rather than saved passwords or other profile data.
