How to Fix the Ticking Entity Crash Error in Minecraft

A “ticking entity” crash does not identify its own cause. Back up the Java Edition world, inspect the complete report, and choose a recovery step that fits your version, loader, and backup situation.

If Minecraft Java Edition crashes with “The game crashed whilst ticking entity,” start by copying the affected world and reading the full crash report—not by deleting entity files. The heading tells you an error occurred while the game was processing an entity, but the exception, entity details, Minecraft version, and installed mods determine which recovery step is appropriate.

What a “ticking entity” crash means

Entity ticking is part of how Minecraft processes things such as mobs and other entities during gameplay. A “ticking entity” crash identifies the stage at which the failure surfaced; it does not, by itself, prove that an entity is corrupt or reveal the cause. The exception and surrounding report details matter. Mojang bug reports illustrate that crash reports may include a Java exception as well as entity and location information (Mojang issue MC-123307; Mojang issue MC-197616).

The guidance here is for Java Edition. A crash with similar wording can have different causes, particularly in modded installations, so do not assume one configuration change or file deletion will fix every case.

Start with a backup and the complete crash report

  1. Stop troubleshooting on the original world. Make a separate copy of the save before changing configuration or world data. For a server, preserve the relevant logs and use the server’s documented backup process. Keep the untouched copy somewhere you will not overwrite it.
  2. Save the full crash report. Look beyond the “ticking entity” headline for the exception or error and any details identifying an entity, its coordinates, the world or dimension, and the region or chunk. Record the Minecraft version and, if applicable, the mod loader and mod versions.
  3. Note the sequence of events. Write down whether the crash began after entering a particular area, changing a mod, updating Minecraft, or updating the loader. This can help narrow the diagnosis, but timing alone does not establish the cause.

These details are useful when asking a mod developer, server administrator, or support community for help. Share the report and version information, but avoid posting private server details or credentials.

Check for a recent mod or loader change

If the world uses mods and the crash began after a mod, mod update, or loader change, check that the installed versions are compatible with the exact Minecraft release and loader. A controlled test is to revert the recent change or test a copy of the world with a compatible mod set. Modded crash examples exist, but that does not mean mods cause every ticking-entity error (Minecraft Forum discussion).

Do not remove mods from the live world as a first test. A mod may provide blocks, items, or entities saved in that world; removing it can have unintended effects. The available evidence does not establish a universally safe procedure for removing mods from an existing save.

Choose a recovery path that fits your situation

Situation Next step Data-loss risk
A known-good backup from before the crash exists Restore that backup after confirming it belongs to the affected world and is compatible with the intended game setup. Restores an earlier world state, so changes made after the backup may be lost.
The crash followed a mod or loader change Check compatibility and test a revert or compatible setup on a copy of the world. Testing a copy limits risk; changing the live setup can affect mod-provided content.
The report identifies an entity or location, but there is no suitable backup Preserve the original and seek help with the report and version details before attempting a targeted data edit. File-level edits can affect saved world data; the correct target may not be obvious.
The installation uses Forge and other steps have not worked Only consider a removal setting after confirming the exact Forge version, setting location, and consequences. Removal may discard an entity and does not repair its underlying cause.

Restore a known-good backup

If you have a backup made before the crash, restoring it is often the clearest way to return to a prior world state. Confirm that it is the right world and that your intended Minecraft and mod setup matches the backup. A third-party hosting guide includes backup restoration as a recovery option, but does not establish a universal Mojang restore workflow (Shockbyte troubleshooting guide). Follow the backup provider’s instructions if the world is hosted.

Ask for help before editing entity data

A 2021 Minecraft Forum post reports that deleting MCA files in a save’s entities folder fixed one user’s case. That is a single anecdote, not a generally safe removal procedure: it does not establish that deleting a whole region file is safe or that the change will affect only the problem entity. Do not try it on your only copy. If you cannot confidently identify the correct world, dimension, and files, stop and ask for help from the relevant mod or server support community.

Treat Forge removal settings as a last resort

A third-party troubleshooting guide mentions Forge’s removeErroringEntities setting as a possible last-resort option. Another user report describes removal options that did not solve that case, so this is not a guaranteed fix. Confirm the setting applies to your exact Forge version and understand that removing an entity discards it rather than correcting the underlying problem. Do not apply this Forge-specific suggestion to vanilla, Fabric, NeoForge, or other Forge versions without evidence for that setup.

What the Java /tick commands can—and cannot—do

Mojang’s Java Edition 1.20.3 release notes describe /tick query for tick-rate and performance information, /tick freeze to pause most gameplay for inspection, and /tick step to advance ticks while frozen. These are administrative and debugging commands requiring elevated permissions; the notes do not describe them as a way to identify or remove a bad entity (Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.3 release notes). Their documented behavior is version-specific, so do not treat them as a general repair procedure.

If the crash continues

Keep the untouched world copy and provide the full crash report, Minecraft version, loader and mod versions, and any recent changes when seeking help. If a backup is available, avoid overwriting it while testing. If no safe recovery target is clear from the report, get version-specific support before changing entity files or removing mods.
