How to Fix the UE4-EMLauncher “Fatal Error” in Duet Night Abyss on PC

If Duet Night Abyss stops with “Fatal Error! UE4-EMLauncher Game has crashed and will close”, the failure is happening during launcher or early startup—not necessarily because your GPU or DirectX installation is defective. Close stuck processes, try DirectX 11, run the launcher’s Repair Now tool, and then test the game executable directly. If those steps fail, check prerequisites, networking, security software, drivers, and finally reinstall from the official source.

Try these fixes in this order

1. Restart Windows and end any remaining EM.exe or Duet Night Abyss processes in Task Manager.
2. Start the launcher as administrator.
3. Enable Launch with DirectX 11, if that option appears.
4. Open the menu beside Start and choose Repair Now.
5. Try launching the game executable directly.
6. If the launcher still fails, test another network and check antivirus quarantine.
7. Install the bundled Unreal prerequisites, update Windows and your GPU driver, then reinstall only if necessary.

The error text identifies a crashed Unreal Engine-based launcher process called UE4-EMLauncher; it does not identify one confirmed cause. Reported triggers include damaged files, failed patch or startup checks, network routing, permissions, security software, missing runtimes, and renderer compatibility. The point at which the crash occurs is useful: a crash before login suggests launcher, prerequisite, permission, antivirus, or network initialization trouble; a crash after pressing Start makes files, DirectX, overlays, and permissions more likely. A crash after the game has opened is a separate game-process stability problem.

1. Close stuck processes and restart

Exit the launcher. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, select any remaining launcher, EM.exe, or game processes, and choose End task. Restart Windows and try again. A process left running after a failed update can prevent the next launcher instance from reading or replacing its files.

2. Enable DirectX 11

If the launcher opens, look above the Start button for Launch with DirectX 11 and enable it. Start the game again. Third-party troubleshooting coverage reports this as a useful compatibility option, but results vary by system; it is not proof that DirectX 12 is universally broken. DX11 can have different performance, visual, or frame-pacing characteristics. If your current launcher does not show this control, do not edit undocumented configuration files based on instructions for another build.

3. Repair the installation

1. Open the Duet Night Abyss launcher.
2. Open the three-line menu beside Start.
3. Choose Repair Now.
4. Confirm the scan or repair and let it finish completely.
5. Restart the launcher and test the game.

Repair can replace missing or corrupted downloaded files, but it may require a substantial re-download. Do not interrupt it. Repair may fail if antivirus software quarantined a file, the installation directory is not writable, or the launcher cannot reach its update servers.

The developer’s CBT2 PC installation FAQ—an older closed-beta document, not current release documentation—also directed players to Repair Now after security software caused download or decompression failures.

4. Run the launcher or game as administrator

Right-click the launcher shortcut or executable and choose Run as administrator for one test. If you are changing the shortcut permanently, use Properties → Compatibility and check that unnecessary compatibility mode is not enabled. Compatibility mode can introduce new problems on modern Windows. Administrator access can help when the launcher cannot write to its installation or patch directories, but it will not repair corrupted files.

5. Bypass the launcher as a diagnostic workaround

Close the launcher, open the game’s installation folder, and look for an executable similar to:

Double-click EM.exe, or right-click it and choose Run as administrator. Depending on the distribution channel and build, the packaged executable may instead be under a path similar to:

Search inside the installation folder if neither path is identical. These paths are community-reported and can change between builds. Do not download a replacement executable or DLL from an unofficial website.

Direct launching may get you past a launcher crash, but it is not necessarily a permanent or fully supported fix. It may bypass updating, patch validation, authentication, or account handoff. If the game requests an update or will not authenticate, return to the launcher after repairing the installation.

If EM.exe and the packaged executable are both missing, the installation may be incomplete, the path may differ, or security software may have quarantined files. Repair or reinstall; never obtain the missing file separately.

Review the reported direct-launch and network workaround paths.

6. Test network routing without assuming a VPN is the fix

Network initialization and patch checks can fail, but a VPN is not a guaranteed solution. Run a controlled test:

1. Restart your modem or router.
2. Try a phone hotspot or another network, if available.
3. If the launcher is stuck checking online services, briefly test it with Wi-Fi or Ethernet disconnected.
4. Reconnect and try again.
5. If you already use a VPN, disable it; alternatively, test one nearby endpoint once and disable it afterward if it does not help.

If changing networks changes the result, suspect routing, a proxy, firewall rules, DNS, or server-side authentication rather than assuming the game files are fixed. VPNs can also increase latency or interfere with login.

To clear Windows’ local DNS resolver cache, open Command Prompt as administrator and run:

Restart the launcher afterward. DNS flushing only resets the local DNS cache; it cannot repair corrupted game files or a genuine Unreal Engine crash.

The older official CBT2 FAQ advised checking VPN, proxy, and hosts-file settings and disabling VPNs or third-party accelerators during download problems. Community reports describe the opposite—briefly launching offline or through another route. Both can be true because the failing network path differs between players.

7. Check antivirus and Windows Security

Review your antivirus quarantine and protection history before reinstalling. Security software can falsely flag files while the game is downloading or decompressing.

• Restore a quarantined file only if it came from the official installer and you can verify it belongs to the game.
• If needed, create a narrowly scoped, temporary exclusion for the official game and launcher directory.
• Run Repair Now again.
• Re-enable protection and remove the exclusion after testing.

Do not leave antivirus protection disabled permanently. The historical CBT2 FAQ mentioned temporarily disabling security software, but checking quarantine and using a limited exclusion is the safer current troubleshooting approach.

8. Install the bundled Unreal prerequisites

If the launcher will not open properly or Windows reports a missing runtime, check whether this file exists in your installation:

Run it and follow the installer prompts. The older official FAQ identified this bundled installer for startup errors involving damaged or missing .NET Framework and DirectX components, and also referenced Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime and DirectX Runtime prompts. The path may not exist in every current store build, so do not download random DLL files from third-party DLL sites.

9. Update Windows, drivers, and overlays

Install pending Windows updates, install the current stable driver from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel, and restart Windows. If the crash began immediately after a driver update, use the manufacturer’s supported rollback process instead. No particular driver version is established as a universal fix for this error.

For one test, disable overlays and monitoring tools, including Steam Overlay, Discord Overlay, Xbox Game Bar, NVIDIA or AMD overlays, MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner, and recording software. If the launcher starts afterward, re-enable them one at a time to identify the conflict.

10. Clean reinstall only after the earlier steps

1. Uninstall Duet Night Abyss through Windows or your store client.
2. Restart Windows.
3. Confirm the installation location and back up any settings or screenshots you need.
4. Remove leftover game files only after confirming the correct folder.
5. Download a fresh installer from the official game site, Steam, or Epic Games Store.
6. Install to a location with adequate free space and normal write permissions.
7. Launch once before adding overlays, mods, or custom compatibility settings.

Storage requirements vary by storefront and listing revision. Steam currently lists 32 GB minimum and 40 GB recommended, while the Epic listing has shown 20 GB. Follow the requirement displayed by the store you use rather than combining those figures. Steam’s listing also shows Windows 7, but the Steam client itself requires Windows 10 or later; use a supported modern Windows and Steam environment instead of relying on Windows 7 compatibility.

Reinstallation cannot guarantee a permanent fix if a launcher regression, failed patch, or recurring security-software conflict returns.

Do not confuse this with other problems

• Login or authentication failure: the launcher may open normally but fail to sign in. Direct launch may bypass the launcher without solving account authentication.
• Download or patch failure: focus on free space, permissions, antivirus quarantine, proxy/VPN settings, and Repair Now.
• Black screen: test DX11, disable overlays, and investigate renderer or display-driver problems.
• Stuck update check: test another network and verify that security software is not blocking the launcher.
• Crash after gameplay begins: treat it as a game-process stability issue and investigate overlays, graphics settings, temperatures, drivers, and game logs separately.

When to contact support

Contact support when Repair Now completes but the crash returns every launch, the game executable is missing, the launcher repeatedly redownloads the same files, the failure persists across multiple networks and a clean installation, or Windows Event Viewer identifies a recurring module or access violation. Also report crashes that began immediately after an update and affect multiple players instead of repeatedly reinstalling.

• Exact error text and screenshots
• Windows version
• CPU, GPU, RAM, and graphics-driver version
• Distribution channel: official launcher, Steam, or Epic
• Installation path
• Approximate failure time and region
• Whether DX11, Repair Now, direct launch, and another network were tested
• Available launcher or game logs
• Whether antivirus quarantined anything
