Most VALORANT timeouts on Windows are caused by an unstable connection between your PC and the game server, but a timeout before the game opens can also come from Windows Firewall, damaged Riot Client files, conflicting background software, or Vanguard. Start with the low-risk isolation test: use Ethernet, reboot the modem and router, stop other traffic, and disable VPNs or proxies temporarily. Then reset Windows networking, test DNS, allow Riot programs through the firewall, repair the client, and investigate Vanguard only when the symptoms point there. The sequence below separates mid-match connection faults from launch failures so you can test one cause at a time instead of changing everything at once.
What does a VALORANT timeout mean on Windows?
A timeout means that VALORANT or the Riot Client did not receive a response from the required server within the expected interval. Riot Games Support describes high latency and disconnections as a delayed or unstable connection between your computer and the game server. During play, the usual signs are repeated packet loss, brief disconnects, rubber-banding, delayed movement or abilities, and a network-problem icon.

The icon is useful when it appears repeatedly or stays visible for a long period. Riot says it is most commonly triggered by consistently high packet-loss rates or brief disconnects. Turn on Settings > Video > Stats and enable the packet-loss and relevant performance graphs before troubleshooting. The graph helps distinguish a local wireless problem from a router, ISP path, or game-client problem; a single isolated warning is less informative than a pattern.
Do not treat every timeout as an account or server outage. A match-time timeout usually begins with the network path. A message that appears before the Riot Client or game can open requires a second branch for firewall rules, corrupted files, background software, and Vanguard.

Is the timeout happening during a match or before VALORANT opens?
When you identify the exact point of failure, you can choose reversible tests first and avoid unnecessary reinstalls.
Timeout, rubber-banding, or reconnecting during a match
Prioritize packet loss and route stability. Test the same PC on a wired connection, power-cycle the network equipment, stop competing traffic, and remove VPN or proxy variables. If the problem affects every device on the network, suspect the router or ISP path; if only this PC is affected, Windows configuration or local software becomes more likely.

Riot Client or VALORANT will not connect after launch
Check the Windows Firewall allow-list, repair the Riot Client files, and perform a clean boot to find a software conflict. If messages mention Vanguard, the game closes immediately, or the Vanguard service is missing, use the Vanguard procedure rather than repeatedly changing DNS.
Both situations occur
Run the network isolation test first, then work through Windows networking and firewall checks. A launch repair cannot correct packet loss, and port forwarding will not repair damaged client files.
What should I do in the first five minutes?
These checks are quick, reversible, and provide evidence for the more invasive steps.
- Test Ethernet. Connect the PC directly to the router with a network cable, preferably Cat6 for the diagnostic, and play or reconnect long enough to reproduce the issue. If Ethernet is stable while Wi-Fi is not, the wireless link or interference is the immediate lead.
- Power-cycle the network. Turn off the modem and router, wait at least 30 seconds, turn them back on, and wait for the internet connection to return before opening Riot Client.
- Stop competing traffic. Pause downloads, video streams, cloud synchronization, game updates, and other heavy transfers on the PC and other devices. Ask anyone sharing the connection to do the same during the test.
- Remove tunnel variables. Temporarily disconnect VPNs and disable configured proxies. Restore them after testing; they can change the route or block game traffic.
- Watch the graphs. In VALORANT, open Settings > Video > Stats and enable packet-loss statistics. Note whether loss rises only on Wi-Fi, across every device, or only when the game launches.
If the wired test and quiet network eliminate the timeout, fix the wireless, router, or traffic condition instead of changing game files. If the timeout remains on a quiet wired connection, continue with Windows and client checks.

How do I reset Windows TCP/IP and Winsock?
Resetting the Windows network stacks addresses a damaged local configuration. It does not repair an ISP outage, and the commands require an administrator Command Prompt.
- Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
- Run
netsh int ip reset. - Run
netsh winsock reset. - Restart Windows completely.
- Reconnect to the network, open Riot Client, and test VALORANT before changing another setting.
A restart is part of the reset. If the connection is still unstable afterward, use the packet-loss graph and the wired-versus-Wi-Fi result to decide whether the remaining fault is outside Windows.
How do I change DNS and refresh the Windows lease?
Use a DNS change when name resolution appears unreliable or the Riot Client cannot find its services. DNS can help the client resolve a service, but it does not guarantee a lower in-game ping because gameplay latency depends on the route to the server.
- Open Settings > Network & internet, choose your active adapter, and open its IPv4 properties. (The exact panel can vary between Windows 10 and Windows 11.)
- Select the option to use specified DNS servers and enter
8.8.8.8as the preferred server and8.8.4.4as the alternate server, the addresses documented by Riot Games Support. - Open an administrator Command Prompt and run
ipconfig /flushdns. - If the address itself may be stale, run
ipconfig /release, thenipconfig /renew. - Restart Riot Client and test the game.
Record the original DNS setting before changing it if the PC is managed by an employer, school, or family network. Restore the previous values if the network requires its own resolver or if other applications stop resolving normally.
How do I allow VALORANT and Vanguard through Windows Firewall?
Allow the specific Riot executables rather than disabling Windows Firewall globally. Riot notes that a firewall can block the Riot Client from communicating with its servers. A broad firewall shutdown removes protection and makes the result harder to interpret.
- Open Windows Security > Firewall & network protection.
- Choose Allow an app through firewall, then select Change settings. Approve the administrator prompt.
- Allow the applicable private and public network types for each executable used by your installation. If an entry is missing, choose Allow another app and browse to its file.

If you installed the game on another drive or in a custom folder, browse to that installation path instead of creating a rule for a nonexistent file. Close and reopen Riot Client after saving the rules. Re-enable any temporary restrictions you made for testing, and keep the firewall active.

How do I repair damaged VALORANT files?
Use Riot Client’s built-in repair when the game reaches launch inconsistently, reports missing files, or began timing out after an interrupted update. Riot says the tool repairs missing or corrupted files without requiring a complete reinstall.
- Open Riot Client and select the profile icon.
- Choose Settings.
- Select VALORANT in the product list.
- Choose Repair and let the process finish without closing the client.
- Restart Riot Client and test a custom or normal match.
Repair is a client-file operation, so it will not correct packet loss visible in the network graph. If repair reports an error, note the message and move to the firewall, clean-boot, or Vanguard branch rather than repeatedly starting the same repair.
How do I find background software conflicts with a clean boot?
A clean boot starts Windows with non-Microsoft services and startup programs disabled. It is useful when VALORANT works only after closing overlays, security tools, VPN software, monitoring utilities, or other background applications.
- Press Win+R, enter
msconfig, and press Enter. - Open the Services tab, check Hide all Microsoft services, and select Disable all.
- Re-enable the
vgcservice. Riot warns that Vanguard-reliant games will not launch whenvgcis disabled. - Open Task Manager’s Startup apps section and disable the enabled startup applications.
- Restart Windows and test VALORANT.
If the timeout disappears, restore services and startup applications gradually, restarting between groups, until the conflict returns. The last group re-enabled contains the likely cause. Return Windows to normal startup after the test if the clean boot did not change the behavior.
When should I reinstall Vanguard?
Reinstall Vanguard when launch failures, Vanguard-specific messages, or a missing or damaged service remain after the network and client checks. Riot’s ordered approach is configuration cleanup, Vanguard reinstall, clean boot, and then PC connection troubleshooting; do not remove Vanguard merely because a mid-match packet-loss graph is high.
Standard uninstall and reinstall
- Close VALORANT, Riot Client, and other Riot software.
- Use the Vanguard tray icon to choose the uninstall option, or open Windows Add or Remove Programs and remove Riot Vanguard.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
- Launch a Vanguard-dependent game. The launcher should install Vanguard again.
- Restart if requested, then test VALORANT.
Keep vgc enabled after reinstalling; disabling it prevents Vanguard-reliant games from launching.

Advanced removal for a stubborn installation
Only use manual service deletion when the normal uninstall cannot remove Vanguard and you are comfortable recovering from an administrator command. In an administrator Command Prompt, run sc delete vgc and sc delete vgk, restart Windows, and then launch a Vanguard-dependent game to reinstall it. A mistyped service command can affect other software, so copy the names exactly and do not delete unrelated services.
Do I need port forwarding for VALORANT?
Usually not on a normal home connection. Port forwarding is an advanced option for restricted networks such as a college campus, where inbound or outbound traffic is filtered. Ask the network administrator or router manufacturer for help because router interfaces and policies differ.

Forward only the traffic required by the restricted network’s policy, and remove temporary rules when testing ends. Port forwarding cannot fix a faulty Wi-Fi signal, saturated upload, corrupted files, or a disabled Vanguard service.
How do I collect logs for Riot Support?
When the ordered checks do not resolve the error, provide logs instead of guessing at more firewall or router changes. Riot Repair Tool can gather the files support agents need for connection and Vanguard investigations.
- Download or open Riot Repair Tool and run it as administrator on Windows.
- Select VALORANT when prompted.
- Let the tool generate its ZIP archive.
- Attach the ZIP to a Player Support ticket and describe when the timeout occurs, whether Ethernet changes it, and what the packet-loss graph shows.
Include the Windows edition, whether other devices lose connectivity, the approximate time of a recent failure, and any firewall, DNS, clean-boot, or Vanguard change you made. Do not remove the archive’s files or rename logs in a way that obscures their origin.

How can I confirm that the timeout is actually fixed?
After each change, restart only when the procedure calls for it, then reproduce the original condition. For a mid-match problem, play long enough to observe the packet-loss graph rather than judging success from the main menu. For a launch problem, close Riot Client, reopen it, and start VALORANT twice so the result is not a one-time connection.
- Confirm that packet loss stays at the normal baseline and the network indicator does not recur.
- Check that other devices can still use the network if you changed router or DNS settings.
- Restore VPN, proxy, startup services, and DNS values that were disabled solely for testing, one change at a time.
- Keep Windows Firewall enabled and remove temporary port-forwarding rules that are no longer needed.
- If the symptom returns, record exactly which change preceded it and attach the logs to your support ticket.

Does changing DNS lower my VALORANT ping?

A timeout that coincides with outages on phones, consoles, or other computers points away from the game installation and toward the router, modem, Wi-Fi environment, or ISP. Note the exact time and test a different connection, such as a phone hotspot, before changing game files.
Can I keep a clean boot configuration permanently?

What if packet loss is normal but VALORANT still times out?

Should I forward every listed port on my home router?
