If Windows 10 repeatedly asks you to create a PIN when the computer starts, first confirm that the screen is the Windows Hello PIN setup flow. Microsoft identifies repeated PIN requests as a sign-in issue that can follow a security update or another system change. The supported order is to complete PIN creation again, install available Windows updates, and, if creation errors, sign out and sign back in before retrying. If an existing PIN is being rejected, use the separate reset-PIN process instead. Devices connected to a work or school account may be governed by organization policies, so check with the administrator before changing sign-in settings.
What does the Windows 10 “Create a PIN” prompt mean?
The prompt usually belongs to Windows Hello setup, but similar-looking screens can represent different problems. A request to create a PIN, a screen for resetting an existing PIN, and a general password or sign-in error require different actions. Treating them as one problem can leave the original issue unresolved.

Identify the exact screen
- Repeated setup request: Windows asks you to create a PIN even though you already completed PIN setup on this device. This is the symptom addressed by Microsoft’s Windows Hello troubleshooting guidance.
- PIN reset screen: Windows recognizes that a PIN exists but it no longer works, or you selected the reset-PIN option. This is a PIN access problem, not a request to create a second PIN.
- Another sign-in message: The screen asks for a password, reports that an account cannot be verified, or shows a different security prompt. Do not assume the Windows Hello procedure applies.
Read the wording at the top of the screen and note whether the computer is using a personal Microsoft account or an account supplied by an employer or school. Windows setup choices vary by account type and device configuration.
What should I do first when Windows asks me to create a PIN again?
For a genuine repeat Windows Hello setup prompt, Microsoft’s first recommendation is to create the PIN again. Complete that flow once, then check Windows Update so the device has the current fixes available for its installation.

1. Complete PIN creation
- At the Windows Hello screen, choose the button that starts PIN creation.
- Complete any account verification Windows requests. The available verification method depends on whether the sign-in is personal or managed by an organization.
- Enter a new PIN that meets the requirements shown on the screen, then confirm it.
- Sign in normally and restart the computer once to see whether the setup request has cleared.
This action is a supported retry of the setup process; it is not evidence that a particular update or registry setting caused the prompt. Microsoft does not identify one universal cause for every repeated request.
2. Check Windows Update
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Choose Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and allow Windows 10 to download and install updates that are offered for the device.
- Restart when Windows requests it, then check whether the PIN prompt appears again.
Microsoft says security updates or other system changes may be associated with a renewed PIN request. That statement does not identify a specific update, so avoid removing an update or editing the registry solely because the timing appears related.

If the setup flow fails instead of saving the PIN, sign out of Windows and sign back in before trying the creation process again. Microsoft lists this sign-out/sign-in cycle as the next step for errors during PIN creation.
Retry without changing unrelated settings
- Save open work and select Start.
- Select your account icon, then choose Sign out.
- At the sign-in screen, sign back in using the method Windows offers, such as your password.
- Open the Windows Hello setup prompt again and repeat PIN creation.
If the error returns, record its exact wording or code before closing the screen. The code can distinguish a setup failure from an account-policy restriction when you contact support or an administrator. Do not substitute a PIN reset procedure unless Windows says that the existing PIN is not working.
What if my existing PIN is rejected at sign-in?
A PIN that fails at sign-in is a different symptom from Windows asking you to create a PIN again. Use the reset-PIN path displayed on the sign-in screen rather than repeatedly creating a new PIN.
Use the reset-PIN option shown by Windows
- At the sign-in screen, select the link or button Windows provides for resetting the PIN.
- Complete the identity checks requested for the account. Personal and organization accounts can present different checks.
- Set a replacement PIN when Windows confirms that the reset is complete.
- Sign in with the replacement PIN and restart once to verify that the sign-in method works consistently.
If no reset option appears, use the sign-in method that is available, such as the account password, and then revisit Windows Hello from the account settings. The reset route is for an unusable PIN; it should not be presented as a universal way to suppress a setup prompt.

How do I tell whether a work or school policy is causing the prompt?
Organization-managed Windows 10 devices can require additional steps or permissions during Windows Hello setup. Microsoft’s setup documentation notes that options vary with account type and device configuration, so a personal-computer fix may not apply to a managed machine.
Check the account context
- Look for wording that names a company, school, or organization during sign-in or PIN setup.
- Notice whether Windows asks for an organizational account, administrator approval, or a verification method you do not control.
- Do not disconnect the work or school account merely to test the prompt; that can affect access to organizational resources.
Contact the organization’s IT administrator before changing Windows Hello, account, or sign-in configuration. Give them the device name, Windows 10 edition if known, the exact prompt text, whether PIN creation succeeds, and whether the request returns after a restart. Those details help them compare the behavior with the organization’s sign-in policy.
What troubleshooting order works best when the prompt returns after every restart?
Work from the least disruptive, supported actions toward account-specific help. The sequence below keeps the setup symptom separate from a failed PIN and creates a useful record if the issue needs escalation.
Use this checklist
- Classify the screen. Decide whether it is PIN creation, PIN reset, or another sign-in message.
- For repeat creation requests, complete PIN creation once. Do not create multiple PINs in succession when the first attempt has already succeeded.
- Install offered Windows updates. Use the Windows Update page in Settings and restart when required.
- If creation errors, sign out and sign back in. Retry the setup flow after the fresh sign-in.
- If the current PIN does not work, reset it. Follow the reset option Windows displays rather than treating the failure as a setup request.
- Check account ownership. Ask an administrator about policy-controlled devices before changing sign-in settings.
- Document the recurrence. Note when the prompt appears, whether it follows an update or restart, the account type, and any error text.
This order avoids making unsupported changes while testing the two actions Microsoft places first: completing PIN setup again and checking for updates.
What should I avoid when trying to remove the prompt?
There is no single Microsoft-supported procedure in the cited guidance that permanently disables every recurring PIN setup prompt. The correct configuration depends on the account, device, and any organization policy involved.
- Do not assume one update is responsible. Microsoft refers broadly to security updates or system changes, not to one named release.
- Do not edit the registry as a first response. A registry change can alter sign-in behavior without addressing the account or policy condition that triggered setup.
- Do not delete account or credential data casually. Removing sign-in configuration can create a larger access problem and is not part of the initial troubleshooting order.
- Do not repeatedly reset a working PIN. Resetting addresses a PIN that fails at sign-in; it is not the same as resolving a setup prompt that returns after a restart.
- Do not bypass an organization’s requirement. Managed devices may intentionally require Windows Hello enrollment or administrator approval.
If the prompt persists after the supported steps, the safest next action is to obtain help for that specific device and account rather than applying a generic “disable PIN” recipe.

How can I collect useful information before contacting support?
A concise record prevents support from having to repeat the same classification steps. Capture only information that does not expose secrets.
Record these details
- The exact words on the screen and whether it says to create, reset, or use a PIN.
- Whether a PIN was successfully created during the current session.
- Any error number or message shown during creation or sign-in.
- Whether the computer is personal, work-managed, or school-managed.
- Whether the behavior began after a restart, a Windows Update installation, or another visible system change.
- Whether signing out and signing back in changed the result.
Never send your PIN, password, recovery codes, or verification codes to a helper. Support needs the symptom and context, not the secret used to authenticate the account.

Not as a universal, safely supported fix based on the available Microsoft guidance. The documentation explains how to retry setup, check for updates, handle creation errors, and reset a nonworking PIN, but it does not promise that one setting will permanently suppress every request.
Whether a setup option can be changed depends on the account and device configuration. On a work or school computer, an administrator may control the available choices. On a personal computer, resolve the recurring setup state first; only then should you evaluate any sign-in preference that Windows actually offers for that account.

Microsoft recognizes a renewed request after a PIN was created and says security updates or other system changes may be involved. The guidance does not establish a single cause for every device, so timing alone cannot identify the responsible update or setting.
Start with the supported retry and update checks, then use the error and account details to obtain device-specific help if the request keeps returning.

Does resetting a PIN solve a repeated creation request?
Only when the existing PIN is the part that fails. A reset-PIN flow is intended for a PIN that Windows will not accept at sign-in; a creation prompt means Windows is asking to enroll or finish setup. Choose the path that matches the wording on your screen.
Will Windows Update always stop the prompt?
No guarantee is given. Microsoft recommends checking for updates because security updates or other system changes can be associated with the symptom, but the documentation does not say that installing one particular update resolves every case.
What if I cannot complete PIN setup on a company or school computer?
Managed setups can require permissions or steps that are unavailable to a standard user. Contact the organization’s IT administrator with the prompt text, any error code, account type, and whether the request returns after restart; do not remove the management account to experiment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did the create-PIN screen appear after a Windows 10 update?
Microsoft says security updates or other system changes may be involved, but it does not identify one update as the cause for all devices. Check the installed updates and the prompt’s exact wording, then follow the supported retry sequence.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is a Windows Hello PIN the same as my Microsoft account password?
They are separate sign-in methods presented through different Windows flows. If the PIN is rejected, use the reset-PIN option; do not assume changing the account password is the same operation.
Can I skip Windows Hello enrollment on a managed laptop?
The available choices depend on the organization’s policy and device configuration. Ask the work or school administrator before declining, removing, or changing a required sign-in method.
What information should I provide when reporting the recurring prompt?
Provide the exact screen text, any error code, whether PIN creation succeeds, the account type, and whether the prompt returns after restart or sign-out/sign-in. Never include your PIN, password, or verification codes.
