Check the visible message and update history
- Take a screenshot or copy the entire hexadecimal value from the dialog. Include any suffix after a colon or parentheses.
- For an update, open Control Panel → System and Security → Windows Update → View update history and record the failed update’s knowledge-base number and date.
- For setup or upgrade, note the last percentage shown and whether the computer failed during copying, applying features, first boot, or rollback.
Use setup and servicing logs
If the dialog is vague, look for setupact.log and setuperr.log in the setup log locations created by the upgrade process. Component servicing failures are commonly recorded in CBS.log. Back up before changing permissions
Make a complete backup of the operating-system disk, or at minimum copy personal files and create recovery media that you have tested. Reset the Windows Update caches

If it succeeds, leave the .old folders in place until you are confident the system is stable, then remove them only after confirming they contain no files you need.

Check policy and SYSTEM access
On a managed computer, Group Policy can deliberately deny update or installation operations. Ask the administrator to review the policy rather than changing it yourself. The Windows directory and servicing process also require the local SYSTEM account to retain its intended access; do not replace protected ACLs with a permissive, manually invented list.
How do I repair Windows 8 system files and the component store?
