The Windows error 0x8007007E means ERROR_MOD_NOT_FOUND: Windows or an application could not load a required module. That module may be a missing DLL, a dependent DLL, an incorrect file reference, or a file that cannot load because its architecture or runtime does not match. The code is a symptom, not a single diagnosis. The quickest reliable fix is to identify when it appears—at startup, while opening one application, during installation, or during Windows Update—and then follow the matching repair path. Do not download a random DLL from an unofficial website; the code alone does not identify a safe replacement.

What does Windows error 0x8007007E mean?

Microsoft IIS Support defines 0x8007007E as ERROR_MOD_NOT_FOUND – The specified module could not be found. A module is often a DLL, but the message can also mean that a DLL required by the named file is missing, a configuration points to the wrong path, or the file exists but cannot load because a 32-bit/64-bit or runtime requirement is wrong. The same HRESULT appears in unrelated software, so there is no universal one-click repair.

The title is sometimes written as “8x8007007e.” The conventional HRESULT is 0x8007007E (zero, x, eight hexadecimal digits). Record the exact spelling and capitalization from the dialog because the executable or DLL named beside the code is often the most useful clue.

Why can the file exist and still produce “The specified module could not be found”?

Windows loads a chain of modules. If the primary DLL is present but one of its dependencies is absent, incompatible, or blocked, the loader can still return ERROR_MOD_NOT_FOUND. A 32-bit application may also require x86 runtime components on a 64-bit installation of Windows. That is why copying a file with the same name into a folder is not a dependable repair.

What should I record before changing anything?

Capture the context first. The trigger determines whether you should investigate a startup item, repair one application, inspect an installer, or reset Windows Update.

  • Copy the complete message, including the executable or DLL name and path.
  • Note whether it appears while Windows starts, when one program opens, while a program is being installed, or during Windows Update.
  • Write down whether you can still reach the desktop and whether the problem affects one program or several.
  • Check the affected program’s own log, Windows Event Viewer, an installer log, or the exact DLL named in the dialog.
  • Before uninstalling software or deleting files, back up important documents and create a restore point if Windows is usable.

One documented Lenovo case identified SusNativeCommon.dll under C:WindowsSysWow64. That illustrates why the named module and its location matter; your computer may identify a different file.

Which fix should I try for my trigger?

Use the narrowest, most reversible path first. The error code by itself is not enough to choose a repair.

Where the error appears First action Likely scope Escalate to
At Windows startup Clean boot and identify the third-party startup item or service One service, driver helper, or startup application Update, repair, or uninstall the identified program
When one application launches Use the publisher’s Repair option or reinstall the current version That application or one of its runtimes Install the required x86/x64 runtime and inspect dependencies
During program installation Read the product’s installation and security logs; check for incomplete copying or a conflict Installer files, security software, or the target product Publisher support and Process Monitor evidence
During Windows Update Run the Windows Update troubleshooter Update services or cached update files Reset the update cache and run SFC if corruption is suspected
Several Windows components Run DISM, then SFC, from an elevated Command Prompt Windows component store or protected system files Windows recovery or support if both scans cannot repair the image

How do I fix 0x8007007E that appears when Windows starts?

A startup occurrence is commonly caused by a third-party service or startup item that references a removed or incompatible module. A clean boot temporarily disables those non-Microsoft items so you can isolate the responsible program without deleting system files.

  1. Sign in to Windows, press Windows+R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
  2. Open the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then select Disable all. Hiding Microsoft services prevents you from disabling core Windows services by mistake.
  3. Open the Startup tab and choose Open Task Manager. In Task Manager’s Startup view, disable the remaining startup entries. Close Task Manager and select OK in System Configuration.
  4. Restart the computer. If the message disappears, return to System Configuration and Task Manager, re-enable a small group of items, and restart after each group until the error returns. The last group contains the likely source.
  5. For the identified application or service, install its latest publisher release, use its Repair option, or uninstall it if it is no longer needed. Then open msconfig, choose Normal startup on the General tab, re-enable the services and startup items you still need, and restart.

If the error remains during a clean boot, the cause is less likely to be a disabled third-party startup item. Continue with the module and Windows-file checks below rather than repeatedly toggling startup entries.

How do I repair one application that will not launch?

When only one program fails, treat it as an application or dependency problem before changing Windows globally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Read the dialog for a DLL or module name. Check the application’s log and Event Viewer (open Windows Logs and inspect the Application log around the failure time).
  2. Use the application’s publisher installer and select Repair if available. If repair is unavailable, uninstall the program, restart, and install the current version from the publisher. A complete reinstall replaces files that an interrupted update may have removed.
  3. If the named DLL is absent, let the publisher installer restore it. Do not obtain a DLL from a random download site; the file may be modified, the wrong build, or missing its own dependencies.
  4. If the DLL is present, check whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit and identify the runtime named by the publisher. A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows can require x86 components in addition to x64 components.
  5. For a documented COM-launch failure, National Instruments recommends repairing or installing the supported Microsoft Visual C++ 2015–2022 redistributables in both x64 and x86 editions. Apply that approach only when the affected product requires those packages; installing unrelated runtimes will not diagnose every case.
  6. If a recent application update introduced the error, use only the publisher’s documented rollback, restore, or previous-version installer. Do not replace a system DLL with an older copy.

If the program still fails after a clean reinstall and the required runtime is present, give the publisher the exact executable name, DLL name, Event Viewer entry, and application version. Those details let support identify a missing dependency rather than treating the HRESULT as a complete diagnosis.

What should I do when 0x8007007E appears while installing a program?

An installation failure can result from incomplete file copying, a security product blocking a module, or a conflict with another service. Micro Focus documents this pattern for a Novell Client installation on Windows 8.1 and recommends examining logs rather than guessing at a replacement DLL.

  1. Locate the product’s installation log and record the first module or path reported as missing. Later messages often repeat the original failure.
  2. Review Windows security logs for a block or quarantine event at the same time. If security software reports a detection, follow its normal restore or allow procedure only after verifying that the installer came from the legitimate publisher.
  3. Use Process Monitor to capture the installer while reproducing the error. Filter for the installer process and look for NAME NOT FOUND, PATH NOT FOUND, or access failures immediately before the error.
  4. Retry with a newly downloaded installer from the publisher, preferably after restarting Windows. An incomplete package can omit a required module.
  5. If the failure disappears in a clean boot, re-enable services in groups and identify the conflicting program. Update, repair, or remove that program before running the installer again.

Do not delete unrelated files from C:Windows or copy a DLL from another computer. Windows 8 and 8.1 installations can contain different servicing levels and architectures, so an apparently matching filename may still be incompatible.

How do I repair Windows system files with DISM and SFC?

Use the built-in image and system-file repairs when the error affects Windows components, several applications, or a file that should be protected by Windows. Microsoft’s documented sequence is DISM first and SFC second.

  1. Back up important data and close open applications.
  2. Open the Start screen, type cmd, right-click Command Prompt, and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  3. Run this command exactly, then wait for it to finish:
    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  4. In the same elevated window, run:
    Sfc.exe /Scannow
  5. Restart Windows after both commands complete and test the original action again.

DISM repairs the component store that SFC uses as a source; SFC then checks protected system files. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, save the result and the DISM output rather than repeatedly running the commands. A persistent module error may belong to one application or runtime instead of Windows itself.

How do I fix 0x8007007E during Windows Update?

Use update-specific steps only when the dialog is tied to Windows Update. The same HRESULT elsewhere does not prove that the update cache is responsible.

  1. Open Control Panel, choose System and Security, then open the Windows Update troubleshooting tool (the label may appear as Fix problems with Windows Update on Windows 8). Apply the recommended corrections and restart.
  2. If the failure remains, open an elevated Command Prompt and stop the Windows Update service with:
    net stop wuauserv
  3. In File Explorer, open C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution and clear its contents. Delete the contents, not the parent folder itself. If Windows reports that a file is in use, confirm that the Windows Update service is stopped before retrying.
  4. Return to the elevated Command Prompt and start the service again:
    net start wuauserv
  5. Restart the PC and retry Windows Update. If update files may be corrupted, run the DISM and SFC sequence in the preceding section.

Clearing SoftwareDistribution rebuilds the local update cache; it does not establish that every 0x8007007E message has an update cause. Keep the original Windows Update error and service log if the reset fails.

How do I verify a missing module and its dependencies?

Start with the exact file named by the application, installer, or Event Viewer entry. Check whether it exists in the application directory and whether the application expects a different path or architecture. A present file can still fail because a dependent DLL is missing or because the loader cannot use a runtime built for the other architecture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Compare the application’s documented requirements with the installed runtime and Windows architecture.
  • For a 32-bit application, verify x86 runtime packages even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
  • For a 64-bit application, verify that the publisher supplies a compatible x64 build and runtime.
  • Use the publisher’s repair installer to restore a complete dependency set instead of copying individual files.
  • Preserve the original path and file name in logs when contacting support; “module not found” without that detail is too broad to diagnose.

Which repair is safest and most reversible?

Begin with evidence gathering and a clean boot, then repair the affected application or runtime. Windows-wide changes such as clearing the update cache or running image repairs should be reserved for matching symptoms.

What should I avoid when fixing this error?

  • Do not download a replacement DLL from an unofficial website. The file may be unsafe, mismatched, or missing its own dependencies.
  • Do not copy a DLL from another Windows installation solely because its name matches. Build, language, architecture, and servicing level can differ.
  • Do not disable all security protections permanently to make an installer run. Use security logs to identify a specific block and verify the installer’s source.
  • Do not delete registry entries or Windows folders as a first response. The HRESULT does not identify a registry problem.
  • Do not install both x86 and x64 runtimes at random. Install the editions required by the affected application or its publisher’s support instructions.
  • Do not keep Windows in a clean-boot state after testing; restore normal startup so required services and startup programs can run.

What if none of these steps works?

Keep a concise record for escalation: the full dialog, trigger, executable and DLL paths, Windows edition, application version, Event Viewer entry, installer or update log, and the results of DISM and SFC. Give that package to the application publisher when one program is affected, or to Microsoft support when Windows components or Windows Update remain broken.

If the computer cannot reach the desktop, stop changing files and use the Windows recovery options available for your installation media or recovery environment. A recovery or reinstall decision should follow a backup and a review of the logs; the code alone does not justify replacing Windows.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for more than 100 common Windows issues, including broken system elements, invalid redirects and shared DLL problems, while also offering settings tweaks, temporary-file cleanup, privacy warnings, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding and an app-crash log. FAQ

Does 0x8007007E prove that my computer has malware?

No. The code only reports that a module could not be loaded and can result from an incomplete installation, a missing dependency, or an architecture mismatch. If you also see independent security alerts, investigate those with your established security software instead of treating this HRESULT as proof of infection.

Can System Restore remove this error?

It can help when a recent driver, application update, or startup change caused the failure and a suitable restore point exists. It is not a substitute for identifying the missing module, and it may not affect a damaged application installer or a missing runtime package.

Why does the error return after I reinstall the application?

A reinstall may leave a separately installed runtime, service, or startup entry unchanged. Check the new installation log and Event Viewer entry, then verify the application’s required architecture and runtime rather than repeating the same installer.
