If Windows 8 crashes or fails while copying, backing up, burning a disc, or writing to USB storage, the standard code is usually 0x8007045D (ERROR_IO_DEVICE), not the title’s 0x80007045D. The extra zero may be a transcription error, so first compare the exact code in the message or event log. This error means Windows could not complete an input/output request; the cause can be a damaged drive or disc, bad cable, unstable USB port, file-system corruption, burner problem, firmware, or a driver conflict. Protect readable files first, then isolate the connection, media, and Windows components in that order.
What does 0x8007045D mean on Windows 8?
Microsoft defines 0x8007045D as ERROR_IO_DEVICE: “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.” Windows asked a storage device to read or write data and the request failed somewhere along the path. That path includes the files themselves, the file system, the drive electronics, a USB cable or port, a hub, an optical burner, firmware, and the Windows storage driver.

The code does not identify one failed part. A loose connection can produce the same message as a dying external disk, an unreadable memory card, or a defective DVD. Treat it as a diagnostic starting point rather than proof that Windows itself is broken.
Check the code before applying a fix
The Microsoft entry is 0x8007045D. If your screen really shows 0x80007045D, record the complete message and where it came from before following code-specific advice. A screenshot, Event Viewer entry, or installer log can reveal a different code that only looks similar.

Note what operation failed
Write down whether the failure happened while copying from or to a USB flash drive, external hard disk, memory card, backup target, or optical disc. Also note whether it occurs with one file, one folder, or every operation. Those details determine which tests are safe and informative.
What should I do first when the error appears?
Make a copy of irreplaceable data while the device is still readable, then reset the connection without repeatedly forcing failed writes. Repair scans can put additional stress on a failing disk, so data protection comes before troubleshooting.
- Stop the failed transfer. Do not keep retrying a destination that is clicking, disconnecting, becoming unusually hot, or disappearing from File Explorer.
- Copy accessible files. Move the most important documents, saves, photos, and project files to a separate healthy disk. Start with small batches if large transfers fail.
- Safely eject the device. In the notification area, select the USB icon and choose the device’s eject option. If Windows cannot eject it, close open files and applications, wait for disk activity to stop, and shut down before unplugging rather than pulling the cable during a write.
- Reconnect firmly. Reseat both ends of a detachable cable. Avoid a loose extension lead or unpowered hub during testing.
SanDisk lists unsafe removal, abrupt power loss, file-system problems, bad or loose USB connections, and drive errors or failure among causes of this error on flash drives, external drives, and memory cards. These are cause categories, not a diagnosis of your particular device.
How do I test the USB port, cable, and power path?
Use a process of elimination: change one part at a time and repeat the same file operation. A failure that disappears after a cable or port change points toward the connection; a failure that follows the device points toward the media or its electronics.
Try a direct port
Disconnect the drive from a hub, docking station, front-panel extension, or monitor and connect it directly to the computer. On a desktop, try a rear motherboard port. Test another compatible USB port, including a USB 2.0 port if the device supports it; some older Windows 8 systems behave differently across controller types.
Replace the cable
Use a known-good, correctly rated data cable of the same connector type. A charging-only cable can power a device without carrying reliable data. Inspect plugs for bent contacts, looseness, or contamination, and do not force a connector.

Check power requirements
Bus-powered portable hard disks may disconnect when a port cannot supply stable power. Remove other high-draw USB devices temporarily and, if the enclosure has a separate power adapter, confirm that it is firmly connected and is the specified voltage and polarity. Do not substitute an unknown adapter.
Repeat the test on another computer
Connect the device to another Windows computer and try a small, nonessential file. If the same device fails on multiple computers with different cables and ports, the device or media becomes the leading suspect. If it works elsewhere, investigate the original computer’s port, hub, driver, or power management.
| Observed result | Most likely area | Next action |
|---|---|---|

How can I check the drive in Windows 8 without destroying files?
Windows 8 includes a graphical error-checking tool for many file systems. Run it only after copying important data and after the cable and port tests.
- Open File Explorer and select This PC.
- Right-click the affected drive and choose Properties.
- Open the Tools tab. Under error checking, select Check or Check now, depending on the drive and Windows 8 edition.
- Allow Windows to scan. If it reports errors, follow the on-screen repair option and keep the computer powered until it finishes.
Do not format the disk merely because Windows offers to do so. Formatting removes the file-system structures that make files accessible and can make recovery harder. If the drive repeatedly vanishes, reports an incorrect capacity, or makes mechanical noises, stop repair attempts and consider professional data recovery.

Using CHKDSK
Microsoft’s current repair documentation uses commands such as chkdsk /f C:, but those pages target newer Windows releases. Windows 8 may display different switches or prompts, so verify the syntax for your edition before running a command. Replace C: with the correct volume letter; never guess the letter of a removable disk.
The /f option repairs logical file-system errors. It does not repair failed electronics or physically damaged sectors. On a suspect disk, a read-only check or a manufacturer diagnostic is safer as an initial assessment. If Windows says the volume is in use, schedule the check only after confirming that the selected letter is correct and that critical files are backed up.

What should I check in Device Manager?
A storage-controller or USB driver problem can prevent otherwise healthy hardware from completing I/O. Device Manager can show whether Windows has detected a warning, but a clean list does not prove the disk is healthy.
- Press Windows key + X and choose Device Manager.
- Expand Disk drives, Universal Serial Bus controllers, and, where present, Storage controllers.
- Look for a yellow warning icon, an unknown device, or a device that appears and disappears while you reconnect the drive.
- Open the device’s Properties and read the Device status message and error code.
- Use the hardware maker’s support page for the appropriate Windows 8 storage-controller, chipset, enclosure, or device driver. Avoid random driver-download sites.
If a recent driver update caused the failure, the device’s Driver tab may offer Roll Back Driver. Uninstalling a USB controller causes Windows to rediscover it after a restart, but do not remove devices indiscriminately; record the model and have a working keyboard and mouse available.

Why does the error happen when burning a CD or DVD?
Optical media has its own failure points. Microsoft’s older guidance identifies incompatible or defective discs, burner malfunction, firmware, and an unsupported burn speed as possible causes.
Test different media
Try a new, compatible disc from a different package or type supported by the burner. Scratches, fingerprints, heat damage, or a disc that was previously finalized can prevent a write. Do not keep attempting to burn a disc that the drive cannot reliably identify.
Choose a supported speed
In the burning application, select a lower speed that the burner and media both support instead of the maximum advertised rate. A slower setting can reduce write errors, but it cannot make defective media usable.
Check firmware and the drive itself
Install optical-drive firmware only from the computer or drive manufacturer and only for the exact model. If several known-good discs fail while the same discs work in another burner, the drive’s laser or mechanics may be failing.

Can DISM and SFC fix 0x8007045D?
DISM and System File Checker can repair damaged Windows components that contribute to driver or storage-service problems, but they cannot repair a failing disk, cable, burner, or damaged media. Use them after protecting data and testing the physical path.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt: press the Windows key, type
cmd, right-click Command Prompt, and choose Run as administrator. - Microsoft’s current guidance documents
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth. The cited page targets newer Windows versions, so confirm the command and available options for Windows 8 before running it. - After DISM completes, Microsoft documents
sfc /scannowto check protected system files. Let the scan reach 100 percent and record its result. - Restart Windows and repeat the original operation with the simplest device connection available.
Do not interrupt a repair because progress appears slow. If the system drive itself is showing I/O symptoms, secure files first and use the computer manufacturer’s recovery or diagnostic guidance rather than repeatedly running repairs.
How do I tell whether the drive is failing?
Look for a pattern instead of relying on one error message. A drive that becomes read-only, reports repeated bad sectors, disconnects under light activity, makes clicking or grinding sounds, or shows a rapidly increasing error count should be treated as unreliable.
- Media-specific symptoms: only one disc, card, or drive fails, including on another computer.
- Connection symptoms: moving the cable, changing ports, or bypassing a hub changes the result.
- File-system symptoms: the device stays connected, but particular folders or partitions report corruption.
- Host-system symptoms: multiple known-good devices fail on the same Windows 8 computer.
Use the manufacturer’s diagnostic utility when available, following its warning about destructive tests. A diagnostic that reports hardware failure is a replacement decision, not a reason to keep formatting the device.

A replacement USB data cable is the appropriate first purchase when the existing cable is loose, damaged, intermittent, or unverified. It cannot revive a failing drive, repair a damaged connector, or make unreadable media healthy.
Replace removable media that fails on multiple readers, and replace an external drive that repeatedly disconnects or fails diagnostics after data has been copied. If the files are unique and the device is deteriorating, stop experimenting and use a professional recovery service; every additional power cycle can reduce the chance of recovery.

How can I prevent another Windows 8 I/O device error?
- Use Windows’ safe-eject command before disconnecting removable storage.
- Keep backup copies on a separate device and periodically open a sample of backed-up files.
- Use short, undamaged data cables and connect high-power drives directly when possible.
- Keep the computer and storage device firmware and drivers matched to the manufacturer’s Windows 8 guidance.
- Do not move, bump, or power-cycle a mechanical drive during an active transfer.
- Label backup drives with their purpose and date so an emergency does not lead to overwriting the only copy.
As an optional software shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, review crash-related problems, and perform cleanup and stability checks; it does not repair a failing storage device or damaged media. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash; a free trial is available by category for at least two days before a paid subscription.
What if the code appears only during a backup?
Identify whether the source or destination generates the failure by reversing the direction with a small test file. If reading from the source fails, the source disk or its connection is suspect; if writing to the destination fails, test that destination independently. A backup application’s log may also name the exact path or file that triggered the error.
Can I recover files after Windows reports 0x8007045D?
Sometimes, if the device remains readable. Stop writes, copy the most valuable files first, and avoid formatting or repair operations until you have another copy. If the device is not detected, makes abnormal mechanical sounds, or repeatedly disconnects, software recovery attempts may worsen the situation and professional recovery is safer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 0x8007045D a virus or malware warning?
No. The code is Microsoft’s I/O device error and does not by itself indicate malware. Keep your normal antivirus protection enabled, but diagnose the cable, media, drive, and file system separately.
Why does the error appear only for large files?
Large transfers keep a connection busy longer and can expose marginal power, heat, cable, or media problems. Test with several small files, then a nonessential medium-sized file after changing one part of the connection.
Will formatting the USB drive permanently fix the error?
Formatting can recreate a damaged file system, but it erases the directory structure and does nothing for defective hardware. Only consider it after data is backed up and physical and diagnostic tests show the device is otherwise reliable.
