1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMost Witcher 3 display and stutter problems on PS5 Pro should be diagnosed in this order: update the game to the current Remastered build, install Patch 5.01, restart the console fully (especially after Rest Mode), then check HDR, VRR and cooling. The PS5 Pro version officially supports PSSR, VRR and uncapped frame rates. Ray Tracing Mode targets 60 FPS, while Performance Mode targets 60 FPS and can reach up to 90 FPS on a VRR-capable display.
Start with the correct game build and patch
Do not tune television settings against an outdated installation. CD PROJEKT RED’s PlayStation 5 Pro support arrived with the Remastered release notes dated 28 September 2026. Those notes add PS5 Pro support, PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and uncapped frame rates. Patch 5.01 followed on 8 October 2026 with console performance optimizations, fixes for PlayStation 5 settings resetting at launch, and corrections to frame-rate limits in different graphics modes on the base PS5. It also adjusted Bloom, tone mapping, character lighting, Ray Tracing and Path Tracing.

- On the PS5 home screen, highlight The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered.
- Press the Options button and choose Check for Update. Install every available update before changing HDR or VRR settings.
- Launch the game once after updating, then quit it. This establishes a clean post-patch session for testing.
- If you own an earlier physical or digital edition, make sure the installed PS5 version is the Remastered build within the same platform ecosystem. Testing an older version can produce different menus and frame-rate behavior.
Patch 5.01 is especially important if settings revert whenever the console starts or if a graphics mode appears to use an incorrect frame-rate limit. Those symptoms should not be used to judge your television until the patch is installed.

What the PS5 Pro modes are designed to do
The official feature notes describe two graphics modes with different priorities. Neither is stated to be a universal cure for every television or frame-pacing problem, so select one according to the effect you value and then verify the result on your own display.

| Mode | Primary emphasis | Official frame-rate behavior | VRR requirement | Useful diagnostic question |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ray Tracing Mode | Enhanced lighting and ray-traced effects | Targets 60 FPS | VRR is not stated as a requirement for the 60-FPS target | Does enhanced lighting remain smooth at the 60-FPS target on your display? |
| Performance Mode | Higher resolution than its earlier configuration | Targets 60 FPS and can reach up to 90 FPS | The up-to-90-FPS behavior requires a VRR-capable display | Does VRR produce steadier motion when the frame rate varies? |
PSSR is an image-reconstruction feature intended to provide higher visual fidelity without compromising performance. It does not replace correct HDR calibration, and it cannot compensate for a console that is overheating or a game session that has accumulated performance problems.
Fix a missing HDR menu
The launch notes explicitly record a fix for an issue where HDR settings sometimes did not appear on consoles. Consequently, a missing HDR section is first an update problem, not evidence that your television lacks HDR.
- Install the current Remastered build and Patch 5.01, then quit and relaunch the game.
- On the PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and confirm that HDR is enabled for supported content or for all supported output. Use the option that matches your normal console setup rather than changing several output variables at once.
- Start The Witcher 3 and open its display or graphics settings. Confirm that the game’s HDR controls are now present and enabled.
- If the controls are still absent, perform a full console restart rather than returning to Rest Mode. Then check the game update again before trying television-side changes.
Do not diagnose a washed-out image while the game’s HDR menu is missing. The official fix means the menu should be available on an updated installation; only after it appears can you make a meaningful calibration comparison.

Correct a washed-out HDR picture
There is no single HDR slider value that CD PROJEKT RED identifies as correct for every television. Panel brightness, tone mapping and the television’s game/HDR profile differ, so treat calibration as display-specific.
Use a controlled baseline
- Enable HDR at the PS5 system level and in the game after updating.
- Put the television or monitor in its normal game/HDR picture mode. Avoid a vivid or dynamic preset while you are trying to establish a reference image.
- Change one control at a time. If you alter the console output, the game slider and the television’s tone mapping simultaneously, you cannot identify which change caused the improvement or the washout.
- Let the display switch into its HDR signal mode before judging black levels, highlights and overall contrast. An SDR picture with an HDR game setting, or an HDR signal with an SDR picture preset, can look incorrectly gray or desaturated.
Check the likely causes in order
- Verify that the PS5 reports HDR as active in Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Verify that the game’s HDR option is enabled and that its calibration screen, if shown, is being viewed while the television is actually in HDR mode.
- Return the television’s HDR tone-mapping option to its ordinary game/HDR setting, then adjust the game’s controls gradually.
- After each change, look at both a dark interior and a bright outdoor scene. A setting that lifts shadow detail can also flatten contrast, while a setting that protects highlights can make the picture appear darker.
If the picture still looks wrong, record the exact PS5 HDR state, the game mode, the television’s HDR/game preset and whether the problem occurs in both graphics modes. That information is more useful than a general description such as “HDR is broken.”
Set up VRR for the PS5 Pro
VRR is officially supported, and Performance Mode’s advertised ceiling of up to 90 FPS is specifically tied to a VRR-capable display. A screen that accepts HDR but does not support VRR cannot provide that behavior.

- Perfect puzzling: Puzzles slowly increase in complexity enabling seamless progression and rewarding exploration.
- Confirm that your television or monitor supports VRR at the resolution and refresh rate you use for the PS5 Pro.
- On the console, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and enable VRR. Keep the output resolution and refresh-rate choices at the values your display supports.
- Launch the game and select Performance Mode if you want to evaluate the higher-refresh behavior.
- Allow the display to enter its VRR game state, then observe camera pans and traversal rather than judging a single still image.
VRR can smooth changes in frame delivery, but it does not make every frame rate equal. If the console is affected by downloads, heat, a stale Rest Mode cache or a very long session, those causes should be removed before you decide that VRR itself is malfunctioning.
Stop stuttering with the official troubleshooting order
CD PROJEKT RED’s technical support guidance covers low frame rates, choppy performance and long loading times. Apply the checks in this order so that simple system conditions are eliminated before you compare graphics modes.
1. Finish updates and close downloads
Install Patch 5.01 and pause or finish other downloads. Background network activity is specifically listed as a condition to check when performance is slow or uneven. After downloads stop, quit and relaunch the game so the test begins from a clean session.
2. Fully restart after Rest Mode
Use Power > Restart PS5 rather than immediately resuming from Rest Mode. The support guidance warns that Rest Mode does not clear the cache and can contribute to performance issues. This restart is a key test whenever stutter appears after the console has been sleeping between sessions.
3. Check airflow and temperature
Make sure the console has unobstructed airflow and is not overheating. Inspect the rear area for dust or dirt and remove accumulated debris using the console manufacturer’s safe cleaning procedure. Do not treat a hot, poorly ventilated console as a graphics-setting problem; thermal conditions can affect frame delivery and loading behavior.

4. Inspect physical media when applicable
If you are using a disc, check it for visible damage or dirt. The official checklist includes disc condition because read problems can present as long loading or interrupted gameplay rather than a simple failure to launch.

5. Restart the game after a long session
The technical support page recommends restarting the game after extended play to clear memory and improve performance. If stutter appears only after several hours but disappears when the game is relaunched, note that pattern; it points to session buildup rather than a permanent HDR or VRR incompatibility.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use graphics modes to isolate frame-pacing problems
Once the update, downloads, restart, airflow and session checks are complete, compare the two modes deliberately. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a claim that one mode fixes every display.
- Write down whether VRR is enabled and whether HDR is enabled. Keep those states unchanged during the first comparison.
- Play the same short route or repeat the same camera movements in Ray Tracing Mode and Performance Mode.
- Watch for uneven camera motion, repeated hitching during traversal and changes that occur only when turning rapidly. Do not rely only on a pause-screen image.
- If Performance Mode is being tested on a VRR-capable display, check whether the display actually enters VRR mode. The official up-to-90-FPS statement applies only when the display supports VRR.
- If you need to separate VRR behavior from the game mode itself, temporarily disable VRR, repeat the same route, re-enable VRR and repeat it again. Change no other setting between runs.
Ray Tracing Mode is the appropriate reference when lighting quality is your priority and you want to evaluate the official 60-FPS target with enhanced lighting. Performance Mode is the appropriate reference when you want its higher-resolution configuration and the possibility of frame rates up to 90 FPS on a VRR-capable display. Your final choice should reflect the motion consistency and HDR appearance you actually observe, not just the name of the mode.

These symptoms can overlap, but they have different tests.
| Symptom | First check | What the result indicates |
|---|---|---|
| HDR controls are missing | Game version and Patch 5.01, followed by a full restart | The launch notes identify a console HDR-menu bug that should be addressed by updating. |
| Image is gray, flat or washed out | PS5 HDR state, game HDR state and television HDR/game mode | The official material does not define one universal slider value; calibration is display-specific. |
| Motion is uneven only with VRR enabled | Display VRR capability and a controlled VRR-on/VRR-off comparison | VRR behavior needs to be isolated from downloads, heat, Rest Mode state and long-session buildup. |
| Stutter appears after sleep or many hours | Full restart after Rest Mode, then restart the game after a long session | The support checklist identifies cache state and session memory as possible contributors. |
| Low performance occurs with heat or blocked vents | Airflow, rear dust and console temperature | Resolve the physical operating condition before changing graphics settings. |
When the problem persists
After Patch 5.01, a full restart, closed downloads, a ventilation check and a fresh game session, document the exact failure before contacting technical support. Include whether the issue occurs in both graphics modes, whether HDR controls appear, whether VRR is enabled, whether the display is VRR-capable, and whether the behavior changes after a restart. For disc installations, include the disc condition as well.
A repeatable difference between modes is useful evidence: for example, stutter only in Performance Mode with VRR enabled, or washout only when the game enters HDR. A symptom that disappears after restarting the game or console should also be reported with that recovery step. This information distinguishes a display-calibration issue from a console state, thermal condition or game-session problem.
A reliable final configuration process
- Install the current Remastered build and Patch 5.01.
- Restart the PS5 fully after any Rest Mode use.
- Close background downloads and verify unobstructed airflow and a clean rear vent area.
- Enable PS5 HDR, confirm the game’s HDR controls appear, and set the television to its ordinary game/HDR profile.
- Enable VRR only if the television or monitor supports it at the chosen output mode.
- Choose Ray Tracing Mode for enhanced lighting at its 60-FPS target, or Performance Mode for its 60-FPS target and up-to-90-FPS behavior on a VRR-capable display.
- Test a short, repeatable route, then restart the game after a long session if performance begins to degrade.
This sequence keeps software version, console state, physical conditions, HDR calibration and VRR behavior separate. It also gives you a clear baseline before escalating a persistent problem.
