Start by identifying which Thundercade hardware you own. The NES cartridge, an original arcade PCB and cabinet, and a modern reproduction can use different connectors, voltages, signal standards, and service procedures. A step that is sensible for one platform can damage another. Once the platform is known, isolate the fault by testing the simplest shared components first: power, connectors, cables, controls, speakers, and settings.
Thundercade is SETA’s 1987 vertically scrolling arcade shooter, published by Taito; the Japanese release is titled Twin Formation. The Thundercade/Twin Formation manual documents an NES version and its controller layout, but it does not provide a component-level repair procedure. NES checks below are therefore practical diagnostic steps, while the cabinet checks follow arcade service guidance and clearly labeled diagnostic inferences.

| NES cartridge version | An NES console, a cartridge and an NES controller connected to a console port | Power off the console, reseat the cartridge, verify the controller port, and isolate the cartridge or console with another known-good game. |
| Original arcade PCB and cabinet | A dedicated cabinet, control panel, arcade monitor, speaker wiring, power supply and game PCB | Use cabinet control, video and audio checks. NES parts and console procedures do not apply. |
| Modern reproduction | A replacement board, LCD or CRT conversion, new harness, or non-original cabinet parts | Trace the actual wiring and board labels. Compatibility depends on the revision and the parts installed, not only on the Thundercade name. |
If the cabinet has been converted, record the board model, monitor type, connector labels and power-supply output before ordering anything. A reproduction may retain the original cabinet but use different video, audio or control interfaces.

Fixing an NES Thundercade controller or cartridge fault
Start with a power-off isolation test
- Turn the NES console completely off and remove the Thundercade cartridge.
- Inspect the cartridge edge connector and the console slot for obvious dirt, bent contacts or foreign material. Do not force the cartridge into the slot.
- Reseat the cartridge evenly, reconnect the controller to the correct NES controller port, and start the console again.
- Test the controller in another known-good NES game. This separates a controller or console-port problem from a Thundercade-specific problem.
- If the other game works but Thundercade does not, power off again and clean the cartridge contacts with a method intended for electronic contacts. Allow any cleaning residue to evaporate fully before testing.
- Retest with the same controller. If the game still fails while other cartridges work, suspect the Thundercade cartridge or the console connector rather than replacing the controller at random.
The manual documents the NES control layout, but it does not publish a repair process for the cartridge or controller. Contact inspection, reseating and substitution are therefore diagnostic practices, not manufacturer repair instructions.
Use the symptom to narrow the cause
- No response from every button in Thundercade, while another game also fails: the controller, its cable, or the NES controller port is the first suspect.
- Only Thundercade fails, while another game responds normally: the cartridge contacts, cartridge board or console connector is more likely than the controller.
- Some buttons work and others do not: try a second known-good controller. If the same buttons remain dead, inspect the console port and cartridge behavior; if the fault follows one controller, that controller needs service or replacement.
- Intermittent operation when the cartridge or controller is touched: stop moving it while powered, then inspect seating and contacts with the console off. Repeated flexing can worsen a marginal connection.
Choosing an NES replacement
A replacement NES controller must match the console’s connector and produce reliable button response. A replacement cartridge must match the NES version and region or revision you actually own. A listing that merely says Thundercade or NES is not proof of electrical or mechanical compatibility. Verify the connector, board revision and physical fit before buying.
Fixing arcade cabinet controls
Check the control panel before condemning the PCB
- Switch the cabinet off and inspect the control-panel harness. Reseat loose plugs and look for a wire pulled out of a crimp terminal.
- Confirm that the connector is on the intended board header and that no pin is bent or offset by one position.
- Power the cabinet and use its test or input-diagnostic mode if one is available. Record exactly which input appears when each control is operated.
- Compare the failed control with a working control of the same type. This helps distinguish a local switch or wire from a shared harness problem.
The following distinctions are diagnostic inferences rather than statements from the original manual: a fault limited to one button usually points toward that button’s switch, microswitch, encoder input or local wire; a fault affecting every control points toward shared power, ground, harness wiring or a board failure.

Interpret control-test results
| Observed result | Most useful next check |
|---|---|
| One button never registers | Inspect and actuate that switch, then trace its local wire to the harness or encoder. |
| Several buttons on one connector fail | Reseat the connector and inspect its shared ground or supply pins. |
| Every control fails | Check shared power, ground, harness seating and the board’s input section before replacing individual switches. |
| Inputs appear in the wrong positions | Check connector orientation, pin alignment and any reproduction encoder mapping. |
Do not substitute an NES controller for an arcade control panel. The arcade cabinet expects its own switches, harness and input circuitry; connector shape alone does not establish compatibility.
Fixing a Thundercade arcade black screen or video fault
When controls and audio work but the screen is blank
If the game responds to controls and produces sound but the monitor has no picture, follow the cabinet service checks in this order:
- Verify that the monitor is receiving AC power and that its power connector is fully seated.
- Reseat the video-signal connector and any remote-adjustment connector. A loose remote board or signal plug can leave a monitor powered but blank.
- Inspect the video cable from the game board or video interface to the monitor for a broken conductor, pin pushed back into a housing or damaged insulation.
- Adjust brightness and contrast only enough to establish whether a dim raster or image is present. Return controls to their previous positions if they do not reveal a picture.
- Check accessible fuses for the correct type and continuity with the cabinet unplugged. Do not install a larger fuse to make a failure disappear.
- Measure the power-supply voltages using the cabinet’s service documentation and appropriate test equipment. A missing or incorrect supply can prevent video even when part of the cabinet appears active.
These checks should come before replacing the monitor. A black screen can result from a missing video signal, an unpowered monitor, a blown fuse or an out-of-specification supply, not only from a failed CRT.

When there is no video and no audio
If both picture and sound disappear, begin at the cabinet power path and power supply rather than adjusting monitor geometry. Confirm the cabinet’s input power, fuses, supply outputs and board connections. A common upstream power problem can disable both subsystems, whereas monitor brightness and contrast cannot restore audio.
When the picture is unstable, distorted or the colors are wrong
Document the symptom before changing geometry, convergence or other CRT adjustments. Note whether the image rolls, bends, loses a color, blooms, flickers or changes as the cabinet warms. CRT service can involve hazardous voltages even after the cabinet is switched off. If you are not trained to discharge and service the specific monitor safely, stop at external connector and power checks and use a qualified arcade technician.
Display replacement compatibility
For a replacement display, match the cabinet’s video signal and orientation before considering resolution or physical size. An arcade board designed for a particular analog signal may not connect directly to an arbitrary LCD, and a reproduction may add a video converter. Confirm the input standard, connector pinout, mounting arrangement and power requirements for the exact hardware revision.

Fixing missing or poor Thundercade audio
No sound with normal game operation
When the picture and controls work but there is no audio, use this sequence:
- Open the game or cabinet menu and verify that volume is not muted or set to its minimum value.
- Switch the cabinet off, then reseat the wiring harness and audio connectors at the board, amplifier and speaker ends.
- Inspect the speaker for an obstruction, torn cone, loose terminal or other visible damage.
- Run the cabinet’s sound test if its service menu provides one. Note whether test tones are missing entirely or only one channel is absent.
- Test the audio board or amplifier using the cabinet’s service procedure, if one exists. Do not replace an amplifier before confirming that power, input signal and speaker wiring reach it.
Testing the speaker and wiring separately is especially important when only one channel is silent. A failed speaker, open wire or loose connector can imitate an amplifier failure.

Constant hum or buzz
A constant hum points toward grounding, shared-return wiring or power-supply ripple. Inspect cabinet grounds and audio returns, verify that connectors are seated, and check the supply condition. Keep signal wiring routed as intended by the cabinet design; do not create an improvised ground connection while the system is powered.
Speaker and amplifier replacements
Never substitute a speaker with unknown impedance or power rating. Match impedance, power handling, connector wiring and amplifier compatibility for the exact board and cabinet revision. A physically similar speaker can still overload an amplifier or play at the wrong level.
Replacement-part compatibility by platform
Before ordering a controller, display or audio part, compare the characteristics that determine whether it can work in your hardware.
| Part | NES cartridge system | Arcade cabinet or reproduction | What must be verified |
|---|---|---|---|
| Controller or input device | NES controller connector and button response | Arcade switches, microswitches, encoder or original input harness | Connector type, pinout, button mapping and response; never infer compatibility from appearance alone. |
| Display | Console output handled by the NES display chain | Arcade video signal, monitor orientation and cabinet wiring | Input signal, connector pinout, power, orientation and mounting before resolution or geometry. |
| Audio speaker | Use the NES console’s normal audio path | Cabinet speaker and amplifier path | Impedance, power rating, polarity, connector wiring and amplifier compatibility. |
| Replacement board or media | Correct Thundercade NES cartridge revision and physical fit | Correct PCB revision, harness and cabinet power requirements | Original versus reproduction status, revision, voltage and connector compatibility. |
Exact replacement compatibility depends on the hardware revision. Photograph connectors and label wires before disconnecting them, and keep the original part until the replacement has been verified.
Safety limits and when to stop
- Power off and unplug the NES before removing, cleaning or reseating a cartridge or controller.
- Do not probe an energized cabinet unless you know the test point, meter setting and safe working procedure.
- CRT monitors can retain hazardous voltage. Avoid opening the monitor chassis or changing internal adjustments without appropriate training.
- Use the cabinet’s specified fuse type and rating; a repeatedly blown fuse is a fault to diagnose, not a nuisance to bypass.
- Do not connect an unverified replacement speaker, controller, display or power supply simply because its plug fits.
- Escalate to a qualified technician when the fault involves CRT high voltage, unknown cabinet modifications, burnt wiring, incorrect supply readings or repeated fuse failure.
A practical fault-isolation order
For an NES unit, isolate the controller and cartridge by reseating and substitution with another game or controller before attempting repair. For an arcade unit, separate the systems: controls through the input test, video through power and signal checks, and audio through volume, connectors, speaker and board tests. Record what still works after each change. That record prevents replacing a monitor when the real fault is a fuse or cable, or replacing an amplifier when the speaker wiring is open.
