If Facebook links keep opening with trackid=sp-006 appended, remove unfamiliar software and extensions, then run current Windows Security scans. The parameter alone does not prove that your computer is infected or identify a particular malware family. A May 31, 2023 Appuals guide reports the symptom in connection with potentially unwanted programs (PUPs) and sometimes unwanted browser extensions, but that report is not an independent vendor diagnosis and cannot establish that every case has the same cause.

Use the cleanup sequence below for supported Windows versions: uninstall anything you do not recognize, update Microsoft Defender, run a full scan, use Microsoft Defender Offline if the problem persists, inspect extensions, and only then reset browser data using instructions for your current browser release.

What does trackid=sp-006 mean?

trackid=sp-006 is a query parameter added to a Facebook URL, producing a form such as facebook?trackid=sp-006. The visible text is part of the web address; it is not itself an executable file. A single parameter can be added by many mechanisms, including a browser extension, an installed application, a modified shortcut, or a website redirect.

The symptom-specific Appuals article, updated May 31, 2023, describes the behavior as malware typically installed through unwanted PUPs. It also says that unwanted extensions may be installed. Those are claims about the behavior described in that guide, not proof that the parameter identifies one confirmed malware family. The reviewed evidence does not establish how common the parameter is, whether all cases share one cause, or whether Facebook itself is responsible.

Is the parameter by itself proof that my computer is infected?

No. The parameter is a warning sign worth investigating, not a diagnosis. If it appears once in a copied or shared link and never returns, there may be no persistent unwanted software. Repeated additions, redirects, unfamiliar extensions, pop-ups, or settings that change back after you correct them make a local browser or Windows-software problem more plausible.

Do not enter passwords into a page merely because the address contains the parameter. Check the complete domain in the address bar, close suspicious tabs, and open Facebook from a bookmark or a URL you type yourself. The parameter does not, on its own, show that your Facebook account was taken over.

What should I do first?

Start with Windows and browser checks rather than deleting random files. Work through the steps in order, and restart when a step requests it.

  1. Record the symptom. Copy one affected address into a text file or take a screenshot, noting which browser shows it and whether it happens in a new private window. Do not share a link that contains personal tokens or private information.
  2. Close extra tabs and windows. Keep the affected browser closed while you remove software and run scans. This prevents an open page from continuing to reload or redirect during cleanup.
  3. Review recently installed software. In Windows, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Sort by install date and look for programs you do not recognize, programs installed at the same time the symptom began, or software you did not intend to install. Remove only items you can identify as unwanted; do not uninstall Windows components or a program required by your work or school.
  4. Scan with Windows Security. Update Defender security intelligence, run a full scan, and follow the quarantine or removal prompt for detections.
  5. Check extensions. Disable unfamiliar browser extensions, then test Facebook again. If the symptom stops, remove the extension through the browser’s extension manager and restart the browser.
  6. Reset browser data only after the checks above. Use the reset and clearing instructions for your current browser and release. A browser reset can undo unwanted settings, but it does not remove a Windows application.

How do I remove an unfamiliar Windows app safely?

Microsoft’s current guidance for supported Windows versions is to remove unwanted applications from Settings > Apps > Installed apps. The list can contain legitimate utilities, drivers, game launchers, and work software, so identification matters more than how old an entry looks.

Check the app before uninstalling

  • Read the exact publisher and installation date shown in the Installed apps list.
  • Search your own records: did you install it for a game, printer, VPN, school, or employer?
  • Be cautious with entries that have no publisher, use a name you do not recognize, or appeared immediately before redirects and pop-ups.
  • If another person manages the PC, ask before removing shared or security software.

Uninstall and restart

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Select the three-dot menu beside the unwanted entry and choose Uninstall.
  3. Complete the app’s removal wizard. Decline any offer to install a replacement extension or “cleanup” program unless you deliberately chose it.
  4. Restart Windows before testing the browser again.

Microsoft recommends a Windows Security scan when the suspected application may be malware. Uninstalling an entry is therefore a first action, not evidence that the machine is clean.

How do I scan for malware and potentially unwanted apps?

Use Microsoft Defender in Windows Security before trying optional utilities. Microsoft distinguishes malware from potentially unwanted apps (PUAs): a PUA may show unwanted advertising or install other software without meeting the definition of conventional malware. Windows Security can block PUAs as well as scan for malicious files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Update Defender and run a full scan

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Choose Virus & threat protection.
  3. Under protection updates, select Check for updates (the wording can vary slightly by Windows release) and wait for the security intelligence update to finish.
  4. Choose Scan options, select Full scan, and start it. A full scan checks substantially more files than a quick scan and can take a long time on a large drive.
  5. When it completes, review the results and allow Windows Security to quarantine or remove detections it identifies. Restart if Windows requests it.

Use Microsoft Defender Offline when the problem returns

If unwanted behavior persists or returns after a full scan, Microsoft describes Microsoft Defender Offline as the next scanning step. In Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options, select Microsoft Defender Offline scan and start it. Windows restarts into a separate scanning environment, so save work and close applications first. The computer will restart again when the offline scan finishes; review the result in Windows Security afterward.

Turn on potentially unwanted app blocking

In Windows Security, open App & browser control > Reputation-based protection. Make sure potentially unwanted app blocking is enabled, including both app blocking and download blocking where those switches are available. This setting helps prevent future PUA installations; it does not replace a scan for software already present.

How do I check browser extensions?

An unfamiliar extension is one of the specific possibilities described by the Appuals symptom guide. Microsoft’s Edge guidance also recommends turning extensions off and enabling them one at a time if they appear to cause persistent pop-ups, while scanning for malware as well. The exact labels differ among browsers and releases, but the method is the same.

Use the browser’s extension manager

  1. Open the browser’s extensions or add-ons manager from its Settings menu. In current Chromium-based browsers this is usually under Extensions or Manage extensions.
  2. Write down the name and publisher of every extension you do not recognize, then switch that extension off.
  3. Open a fresh tab and test Facebook. Do not re-enable every extension at once; that makes the cause difficult to isolate.
  4. If disabling one extension stops the parameter or pop-ups, remove it from the same manager and restart the browser.

Extensions that are required by an employer, school, accessibility tool, password manager, or security product may be legitimate. If an extension cannot be removed, the browser may be managed by an organization or the related Windows application may reinstall it. Contact the administrator rather than bypassing management controls.

Test in a clean browser session

After disabling questionable extensions, test the affected address in a private or InPrivate window. Private mode normally starts without some stored session data, but it may still load extensions if the browser allows them in private windows. Treat a clean result as a clue, not a guarantee that the underlying application has been removed.

When should I reset or clear browser data?

Resetting browser settings is useful after unwanted extensions or search and startup changes have been removed. It can clear modified preferences and site data, but it cannot uninstall a Windows program or repair a system-wide infection. The Appuals guide includes Internet Explorer, Chrome, and Firefox reset directions, but those instructions refer to older versions and should not be treated as universal current steps.

Use current, browser-specific controls

  • Chromium-based browsers: open the browser’s Settings, search for reset, and use the built-in option to restore settings to their defaults. Review the warning before confirming.
  • Microsoft Edge: use Settings and more > Settings > Reset settings, then choose the restore-defaults option if it is available in your release.
  • Firefox: open the Help or Troubleshooting Information page and use the current Refresh Firefox control if you need to restore its profile settings.

Before confirming a reset, export bookmarks if your browser does not sync them and make sure you know your saved-password recovery method. A reset can sign you out, remove site permissions, disable themes, and clear startup or search customizations.

What if the parameter keeps coming back?

Persistence means you should look for a cause outside the visible Facebook page. Follow this order so that each result narrows the possibilities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The parameter returns immediately after you open the browser

Recheck extensions and browser startup settings, then run the Defender full scan. If the behavior survives a restart and a full scan, run Microsoft Defender Offline and inspect Installed apps again for software that was added or restored.

It appears only in one browser

Concentrate on that browser’s extensions, startup pages, search provider, and stored site data. Reset that browser using its current support instructions rather than copying steps written for a different release.

It appears in several browsers

A system-level application, shortcut, or Windows setting becomes more plausible than a single extension. Remove unfamiliar apps, complete the Defender scans, and check whether the behavior changes for a separate Windows user account. If you cannot identify the cause after the offline scan, ask a qualified technician or your organization’s IT team to examine the device.

Pop-ups continue but the URL parameter is gone

Those may be a separate browser or website-notification issue. Review notification permissions and extensions in the affected browser, and keep the Windows Security scan results rather than assuming every pop-up is caused by trackid=sp-006.

Should I use AdwCleaner or another third-party remover?

The Appuals guide recommends downloading AdwCleaner, scanning, cleaning, restarting, and then resetting the browser. That is the guide’s proposed workflow, not proof that the utility is required or that it will identify every cause of this symptom. Start with Windows Security and only obtain an optional utility from its verified publisher; avoid download mirrors and “cracked” installers.

No reviewed evidence establishes a paid product, a particular third-party detection rate, or a direct-fit tool for this URL parameter. A second-opinion scanner can be reasonable when Defender reports no issue but the behavior persists, yet you should verify its current Windows support, publisher identity, privacy terms, and removal instructions before installing it. Do not run several real-time security products simultaneously unless their publishers explicitly support that configuration.

Cleanup path What is established Cost and trust check What it can and cannot tell you
Windows Security and Microsoft Defender Offline Microsoft supports removing unwanted apps, updating Defender, running a full scan, and using Offline scan when unwanted software persists. Included with supported Windows editions; keep security intelligence updated and use Windows Security itself. Can detect threats and some PUAs. A clean result does not prove that every browser setting or extension is correct.
Optional third-party utility The symptom guide recommends AdwCleaner, but the reviewed material does not establish a universal requirement or a current result for this parameter. Cost varies. Verify the publisher, download domain, current Windows compatibility, and privacy policy before installing. May provide a second opinion, but capability for this exact symptom must be verified; it should not be treated as proof that the parameter has one known cause.

How can I prevent unwanted redirects and extensions?

Microsoft’s prevention guidance focuses on reducing the chance that a PUA or bundled extension is installed in the first place.

  • Download applications from trusted or official publisher sources, not random “free download” pages or reposted installers.
  • During installation, choose the custom or advanced option when offered and read every screen. Decline unrelated extensions, search changes, and bundled software.
  • Keep Windows, your browser, and other software updated so security fixes are applied.
  • Remove extensions you no longer use and review new extensions after installing browser updates or other software.
  • Leave Windows Security’s potentially unwanted app blocking and app/download reputation checks enabled.
  • Do not trust a pop-up that claims your PC is infected and demands an immediate download or payment. Close the tab and start Windows Security yourself.

These practices reduce risk but do not establish how this particular parameter first appeared. The reviewed sources do not identify a single download, website, or campaign as its origin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should a successful cleanup look like?

After restarting, open the browser from its normal shortcut, verify that no unfamiliar extension is enabled, and visit Facebook by typing the address or using a trusted bookmark. Test more than one new tab and, if relevant, a private window. The address should remain the normal Facebook address for your region instead of repeatedly acquiring trackid=sp-006.

Keep the Defender scan history and the names of any removed apps or extensions until you are satisfied that the behavior has stopped. If the parameter returns after an offline scan and a browser reset, stop installing additional “fix” programs and obtain help from a qualified technician or your organization’s support team; repeated resets alone will not identify a Windows application that keeps restoring the setting.

What should I avoid while trying to fix it?

  • Do not delete random registry keys, browser profile folders, or system files based on a search result.
  • Do not install several unknown cleaners because one pop-up recommended them.
  • Do not disable Defender or potentially unwanted app blocking to make a download run.
  • Do not assume that a parameter in a URL proves a Facebook account breach or a named malware family.
  • Do not reuse old Internet Explorer, Chrome, or Firefox reset instructions without checking that they match your browser’s current release.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I remove trackid=sp-006 by editing the Facebook URL?

You can delete the parameter from a single address before opening it, but that changes only that link. If it is appended again, investigate installed apps, Defender results, and extensions instead of repeatedly editing URLs.

Does seeing this parameter mean my Facebook password was stolen?

No. The text is a URL parameter and is not evidence of account compromise. Use Facebook’s normal account-security tools only if you also see unrelated signs such as unrecognized logins, messages, or profile changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why did a browser reset not fix the problem?

A reset changes browser settings and stored data; it does not remove a Windows application that launches with the system or reinstalls an extension. In that situation, complete the Windows app review and Defender Offline scan, then check whether an administrator manages the browser.

Is a paid malware-removal program necessary?

The reviewed guidance does not establish that any paid tool is required. Windows Security and Microsoft Defender Offline are the supported first-line checks; consider an optional second opinion only after verifying its publisher, current capabilities, and download source.
