Check the edition before troubleshooting
- Determine whether you purchased TurboTax Desktop for Windows or are trying to use TurboTax Online. Online has no Desktop installer.
- Confirm the tax year printed in your account or on the download page: 2023, 2024, 2025, or 2026.
- Open Settings > System > About and read System type. It must say 64-bit operating system for the Desktop editions listed above.
- Press Windows key + R, enter
winver, and verify the Windows release if you are unsure whether the computer is running Windows 10 or Windows 11.
If you have Windows 10 and the installer is for TurboTax Desktop 2025 or 2026, stop retrying the same file. Upgrade to a supported 64-bit Windows 11 installation or use the browser-based TurboTax Online route if its browser and internet requirements fit your computer.

Confirm free space
Open Settings > System > Storage and check the system drive, normally C:. Do not judge capacity only by the TurboTax program size: .NET 4.8 can require up to 4.5 GB, and Windows needs working space for extraction and updates. Empty the Recycle Bin if the drive is close to full.
Use an administrator account
Right-click the downloaded setup file and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt. If that command is missing or credentials are rejected, sign in with a Windows administrator account rather than repeatedly launching the file from a standard account.

A clean attempt removes a partial installation, refreshes Windows components, and uses a newly downloaded installer with elevated permissions.
- Close TurboTax and other installers. Save work in other programs, then close TurboTax, Microsoft Store installers, and any setup window. If another Windows user is signed in and running TurboTax, have that user exit it; Intuit associates this situation with Error 70001.
- Remove an incomplete TurboTax copy. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Control Panel > Programs and Features on older Windows), select the TurboTax entry for the affected tax year, choose Uninstall, and restart when Windows requests it.
- Install Windows updates. Go to Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart. Also install current hardware drivers from the computer manufacturer when driver problems are suspected.

A download can become corrupted. Delete the existing TurboTax setup file, including any duplicate copy in Downloads, and empty the Recycle Bin.
- Download from the official source. Get the Windows Desktop installer again from InstallTurboTax.com, making sure the tax year and edition match the license. Do not reuse a file that was interrupted or partially downloaded.
- Launch with elevation. Right-click the new setup file, select Run as administrator, and keep the computer connected to the internet while the installer obtains or verifies prerequisites.
- Allow the prerequisites to finish. If the installer offers Microsoft .NET 4.8 or Visual C++ 2022, allow those installations to complete. A restart requested by a prerequisite is different from a restart loop; complete one restart, then run the TurboTax setup again as administrator.

How do I fix a TurboTax update stuck at 0% or 100%?
An update display can remain at 0% or 100% while files are being checked or written. Wait up to 15 minutes before terminating the process.

- Leave the update window open for the full 15-minute period, with the PC connected to the internet.
- If there is still no progress, close TurboTax normally if possible and restart Windows.
- Run Disk Cleanup: open the Start menu, type Disk Cleanup, choose the system drive, select temporary files and other safe categories, and confirm the cleanup.
- Empty the Recycle Bin, then launch TurboTax and choose Check for Updates again.
- If the in-app update continues to fail, use Intuit’s documented manual-update path for your tax year rather than an unofficial mirror. The manual package must match the installed edition and year.
Do not repeatedly force-shut down Windows during the update. An interrupted write can leave a partial installation that then requires uninstalling TurboTax before the next attempt.

A Microsoft Installer error often means TurboTax can read its installation files but cannot write to the destination folder. Repair the folder’s Write permission, then relaunch TurboTax.
- Exit TurboTax and confirm that no TurboTax process is still running in Task Manager.
- Open File Explorer and browse to the TurboTax installation folder. A typical path is
C:Program FilesTurboTaxIndividual 2023; the tax-year folder can differ. - Right-click the TurboTax folder and choose Properties.
- Open the Security tab and select Edit.
- Select your Windows user account and ensure Write is allowed. Check the permissions for each relevant subfolder as well.
- Make sure no Deny entry overrides the allowed Write permission. A Deny setting takes precedence and can produce the same installer error even when Allow is checked.
- Select Apply, then OK through the open dialogs. Relaunch TurboTax, preferably with Run as administrator.
If the folder is owned by another account or the Security editor will not save the change, do not broadly grant permissions to every user. Uninstall the damaged copy and perform the clean installation procedure with an administrator account.
Why does TurboTax keep asking me to restart?
A repeated restart prompt usually indicates that TurboTax or its Microsoft Visual C++ runtime is left in an incomplete state. Remove both components, restart Windows, and reinstall so the runtime can be registered again.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and uninstall TurboTax for the affected tax year.
- In the same list, locate the installed Microsoft Visual C++ programs and uninstall the Visual C++ entries associated with the failed installation. If Windows displays separate entries for different architectures or years, remove the entries Intuit’s installer added for this attempt rather than deleting unrelated software at random.
- Restart Windows even if the uninstall wizard does not insist on it.
- Run Windows Update and restart again if updates are pending.
- Download a fresh TurboTax installer from InstallTurboTax.com and run it as administrator while online.
If the restart loop returns after TurboTax and Visual C++ have both been removed and reinstalled, Intuit’s guidance indicates that the operating system itself may need repair. Continue with the Windows installation-repair section instead of repeatedly removing the same programs.

What should I do if the installer says another user is running TurboTax?
Error 70001 can occur when TurboTax is active in another Windows user session. Sign out the other user, close TurboTax there, or restart the computer before trying the installation again.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager and check for TurboTax processes under the current account.
- Use Users in Task Manager to see whether another account is signed in. Ask that user to exit TurboTax and sign out.
- If you cannot identify the session, restart Windows and sign in only with the administrator account performing the installation.
- Run the setup file again with Run as administrator.
How can I replace a damaged download or corrupted Windows files?
When the installer opens briefly, disappears, or fails at different percentages on different attempts, treat the downloaded package or Windows system files as possible sources of corruption.
Redownload the package
Delete every copy of the setup file, empty the Recycle Bin, and download the exact tax year and edition again from InstallTurboTax.com. Save it locally before launching it, then use the administrator command. Avoid launching a partially downloaded file directly from a browser’s temporary download panel.

Use Selective Startup
Background software can intercept an installer. Press Windows key + R, enter msconfig, and open System Configuration. On the Services tab, use the Microsoft-services option before disabling non-Microsoft services; on Startup, open Task Manager and temporarily disable nonessential startup items. Restart in Selective Startup Mode and test TurboTax. Restore Normal Startup after the test so normal drivers and services load again.
When should I use Microsoft’s installation troubleshooter?
Use Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter when TurboTax will not install, uninstall, or update after the basic cleanup. It is designed to repair corrupted registry keys and incomplete uninstall data that can block a new setup.
- Close all installers and back up any files you need from the affected TurboTax installation.
- Run Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter.
- Choose the option for installing or uninstalling, depending on the action that is blocked.
- Select the TurboTax entry when it appears. If it is missing, use the product code option only if Microsoft’s tool provides one for your case.
- Let the tool remove the damaged registration data, restart Windows, and run the fresh TurboTax installer as administrator.
Windows 11 may offer a built-in troubleshooting prompt when an installation is blocked; follow that prompt first. On Windows 10, Microsoft provides a downloadable version of the troubleshooter. This tool repairs installer metadata; it does not make TurboTax Desktop 2025 or 2026 compatible with Windows 10.

TurboTax Online avoids the Windows Desktop installer entirely. It is the practical fallback when the computer cannot meet the Desktop tax-year requirement, when Windows permissions or registry data remain damaged, or when you prefer not to install local software.
