The first step is matching your Minecraft edition to the server. Java Edition players must join Java-hosted servers, while Bedrock Edition players must use Bedrock servers, Realms, featured-server lists, or Bedrock friend worlds. Java and Bedrock do not directly connect to each other’s servers.
After confirming the edition, Java normally requires Multiplayer → Add Server or Direct Connection and the server address. Bedrock normally uses Play → Servers for featured servers, Add Server on supported platforms for a custom address, or Play → Friends → Joinable Friends to enter a friend’s world.

Check these requirements before you try to connect
Most failed connections are caused by an edition mismatch, an incompatible game version, missing account permissions, or an incorrect address. Check the following before troubleshooting menus or restarting the game:

- Edition: Confirm whether you own and launched Java Edition or Bedrock Edition. The server, Realm, or friend world must use the same edition.
- Version: Update Minecraft to the release required by the server. Some community servers remain on a specific version, so use the version the operator announces rather than assuming the newest release is accepted.
- Microsoft account: Console and mobile Bedrock players need a linked or signed-in Microsoft account for online features. A child account may also need multiplayer permission enabled by its family-account administrator.
- Console online access: Online multiplayer on a console may require that platform’s current online subscription, such as Xbox Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus, or Nintendo Switch Online.
- Connection: Use a stable internet connection, or the same working local network when a game is advertised as a LAN session.
- Address and port: Use the exact server address supplied by the operator. If a port is listed, enter that port too; there is no universal Minecraft server address.
- Availability: A listed server can be offline, full, or undergoing maintenance even when your own connection is working.
If you are joining a friend’s Bedrock world, both players must be online, friends in Minecraft, and using compatible Bedrock versions. The host must have made the world joinable.

Java Edition: join a public or community server
Java’s standard workflow is designed for a server address supplied by an operator or community. The address may be a domain name or an IP address. Some operators also publish a port, rules, required version, or account requirements.
Step 1: Confirm that the server is for Java
Look for an explicit “Java Edition” label. A server advertised only for Bedrock will not accept a normal Java connection, and a Java-only server will not appear in Bedrock’s featured-server list. Cross-play is possible only when a particular server has deliberately built and configured a compatible bridging solution; the ordinary Java and Bedrock server ecosystems remain separate.
Step 2: Launch Java Edition and open Multiplayer
- Start Minecraft: Java Edition.
- From the main menu, select Multiplayer.
If the menu reports that online play is unavailable, sign in with the account used for Minecraft and check the account’s multiplayer settings before proceeding.

Choose Add Server when you want the server saved in your list. Enter a name you will recognize and the exact server address. The name is only a label on your computer; it does not change where Minecraft connects.
Choose Direct Connection when you want to enter an address for a one-time session without saving it. The official Java help flow specifically uses Direct Connection and an entered server address.

Step 4: Connect
- Select the saved server, or use Direct Connection.
- Check the address and port one more time.
- Select Join Server or the equivalent connect button.
The first connection can take longer while Minecraft loads the server’s resource pack or world information. Follow the server’s on-screen rules and verification instructions once you arrive. Those requirements are controlled by the operator, not by Minecraft’s general multiplayer menu.
What to verify when Java connection fails
- Remove spaces or typing errors from the address.
- Use the port exactly as supplied. Do not add a guessed port.
- Change your game profile to the version the server supports.
- Confirm that the operator has not changed the address or taken the server offline.
- Sign in again if the launcher or game reports an authentication problem.
- Test another known-online Java server to distinguish a local network problem from a problem with one operator’s server.
Bedrock Edition: featured servers and custom addresses
Bedrock provides a prominent list of featured servers and, on supported platforms, a way to add a custom server. The exact buttons available can differ by platform, so a missing Add Server button does not necessarily indicate a problem with your account.
Join a featured Bedrock server
- Launch Minecraft: Bedrock Edition.
- Select Play.
- Open the Servers tab.
- Choose one of the featured servers shown as currently online.
- Follow any server-specific sign-in, rules, or resource-pack prompts.
The Servers tab is the normal route for featured servers. A server can disappear or become unavailable when it is offline, full, or under maintenance, so availability in the list is not permanent.
Add a custom Bedrock server
- Open Play and then the Servers tab.
- Select Add Server if your platform displays that option.
- Enter the server name, address, and port supplied by the operator.
- Save the entry and select it from your server list.
Bedrock platform capabilities are not identical. If your device does not provide the custom-server control, use a featured server, a Realm invitation, or the friend-world method instead of relying on an unofficial workaround.
Bedrock connection checks
- Confirm that the address is for Bedrock, not Java.
- Check the port carefully; an address without its required port can fail even when the hostname is correct.
- Install the version requested by the server operator.
- Sign in to the Microsoft account connected to your console or mobile device.
- Check family-account multiplayer permissions and the console’s online subscription.
Join a friend’s Bedrock world
A friend’s ordinary Bedrock world is different from a public server. The host’s game must be running and the world must be configured as joinable. It is not an always-online destination unless the world is hosted through a Realm or another server arrangement.

Host checklist
- Start Minecraft Bedrock and open the intended world.
- Remain online while the other player joins.
- Make sure the joining player is added as a Minecraft friend and that multiplayer is allowed for the world and both accounts.
- Use a compatible Bedrock version.
Joining-player steps
- Launch Minecraft: Bedrock Edition.
- Select Play.
- Select the Friends tab.
- Find the friend’s gamertag under Joinable Friends.
- Select the world and choose the join option.
Only online friends with joinable worlds appear in that section. If the host closes the world or loses the connection, the session may end for everyone who joined it.
If the friend does not appear
Check that both players are signed in, are friends in Minecraft, and are using Bedrock rather than different editions. Confirm that the host is currently in the world, not merely online in a menu. For child accounts, enable multiplayer access in the family-account settings. On consoles, verify the platform’s online multiplayer subscription as well.
Can Java and Bedrock players play together?
Not directly through the normal server menus. Java players can join Java-hosted games, and Bedrock players can join Bedrock-hosted games. A Java player will not join a Bedrock featured server by entering its address, and a Bedrock player will not join a Java community server through the standard Bedrock interface.
Some server operators configure additional software to bridge editions, but that is a server-specific technical arrangement rather than a general Minecraft capability. Before attempting it, read the operator’s edition, version, account, and platform instructions. If no explicit cross-play support is advertised, assume the server accepts only its stated edition.
Realms for an invited, persistent private world
Realms and Realms Plus are official subscription-based hosting services for private worlds. The owner invites players, and invited players connect without searching a public server listing. This is useful when a group wants the world to remain available without one friend leaving a normal world open.

When Realms is the better fit
- Several friends need a persistent private world.
- The group does not want to install or administer server software.
- The owner prefers invitation-based access over a public listing.
A player needs an invitation from the Realm host. The host controls membership and world access. Edition compatibility still matters: use the Realm type that matches the players’ edition.
When a public server is better
Choose a public community server when the goal is a large persistent community, minigames, or a server with its own moderation and gameplay rules. You will need the operator’s current address and must follow its supported-version requirements.
When self-hosting is appropriate
Self-hosting gives a group direct control, but someone must manage the address, software version, networking, backups, access permissions, and moderation. It is practical only when a member of the group is prepared to handle those responsibilities. It is not necessary for a small group that only needs a friend world or an invited Realm.

Detailed troubleshooting by symptom
“Outdated client” or “incompatible version”
Read the server’s required version and launch that version from your Minecraft installation or launcher profile. Updating the client is normally the simplest fix, but a server that has not updated may require you to select an older compatible release instead.

“Unable to connect to world”
First establish whether the problem is one world or every destination. Recheck the address and port, then try another known-online server. If all destinations fail, test the internet connection, sign-in status, account permissions, and console subscription. If only one destination fails, the operator may be offline, full, changing versions, or performing maintenance.
The server is missing from the Bedrock list
Featured-server listings are not a directory of every Bedrock server. Search the operator’s instructions for a custom address, and use Add Server only if your platform provides it. Otherwise, choose a featured server or ask the operator whether a Realm invitation is available.
The Java server says the address is unknown
Type the address exactly as published, without an extra space. If the operator supplied a port, include it in the format the server expects. A changed domain, expired address, or offline server can produce the same symptom, so confirm the current details with the operator.

A child account cannot join multiplayer
The account administrator must enable multiplayer access in the account’s family settings. On console, the platform’s online multiplayer subscription may also be required. Changing the server address will not bypass an account-level restriction.
Connection drops after joining
Use a more stable network connection, reduce competing traffic, and try again after confirming the server is not under maintenance. If only one server disconnects you, its capacity, rules, or version requirements may be responsible. Contact that server’s operator rather than changing unrelated game settings.
Edition and access checklist
Use this short sequence whenever you are unsure what to do:
- Identify the edition shown by your game launcher or title screen.
- Ask the host or server operator whether the destination is Java or Bedrock.
- Confirm the required game version and update or select that version.
- Choose the matching menu path: Java Multiplayer, Bedrock Servers, Bedrock Friends, or a Realm invitation.
- Enter the exact address and port, or select the visible friend or featured-server entry.
- Check Microsoft-account sign-in, child-account permissions, and any console online subscription.
- If it still fails, determine whether the issue affects every destination or only one server or world.
Which option should you use?
Use Java Multiplayer when you have a Java server address. Use the Bedrock Servers tab for a featured server, or Add Server when your Bedrock platform supports custom entries. Use Friends → Joinable Friends for a friend’s temporary Bedrock world. Choose a Realm when an invited group needs a private world that stays available without the host playing. If none of those paths works, verify the edition first; it is the most common reason a correct-looking address still cannot connect.
