Veeam error 0x80004005 is a generic Windows HRESULT, not a diagnosis by itself. The string in the question, 0X8000405, is probably missing one zero, so first confirm the exact code in the Veeam session log. The correct fix depends on whether you use Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 or Veeam Backup & Replication, and on whether the failure occurred during repository integrity checking, a VM backup-file health check, VSS guest processing, checkpoint creation, restore, or proxy allocation. Identify that product and phase before changing files or rerunning a job. What does Veeam error 0x80004005 mean?
0x80004005 is an unspecified HRESULT. What should I do before repairing a Veeam repository or VM chain?
Protect the source and preserve evidence before merging, deleting or rebuilding anything. Microsoft’s Hyper-V guidance says to always back up critical virtual machines before file merges, deletions or major configuration changes.
- Confirm that a recent, usable backup or restore point exists outside the files you plan to inspect.
- Export or save the relevant Veeam session and component logs, including the time of the failure.
- Stop jobs, restores and backup sessions that use a repository while it is being scanned or repaired.
- Do not manually delete AVHDX, VHDX, metadata or repository files to make the error disappear.
- Note whether the storage is local, network-attached, deduplicating, object storage, JET-based or Linux immutable; the supported behavior differs.
How do I repair a Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 repository?
Use the repository-repair workflow when Test-VBORepository reports corrupted or inconsistent file data or incomplete downloads. The procedure is documented in KB4874, published June 29, 2026 and modified September 17, 2026. It applies to Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 8.5 and later; version 8.6 adds JET-based and immutable object-storage repository support.
1. Open the Veeam PowerShell console and load the module
Open the Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 console, launch its PowerShell console, and import the archiver module:

2. Test the repository before starting repair
Replace the displayed name with the exact repository name in your configuration:

Test-VBORepository -Repository $repositoryRead the command output rather than proceeding solely because the job failed with 0x80004005. A repair is appropriate when the test identifies the documented corrupted, inconsistent or incomplete-download conditions.
3. Stop sessions that use the repository
Stop backup and restore sessions that read or write the affected repository before scanning. The repository is locked during the repair scan, so active sessions can fail or remain blocked until the operation ends.

4. Start the correct repair session
For an object-storage repository, run a full repair over the full scope:
$session = Start-VBORepositoryRepairSession -Repository $repository -Type CleanMissingFilesData -Mode Full -Scope FullYou can narrow an object-storage repair to selected SharePoint sites by adding the -WebIds parameter with the relevant site identifiers. Limit the scope only when you have a clear reason; a narrow repair will not inspect other affected sites.

5. Monitor completion and rerun affected jobs
Check the repair session by its identifier:
Get-VBORepositoryRepairSession -Id $session.IdWait for the session to complete before starting dependent jobs. Then run the backup jobs containing the affected SharePoint, OneDrive and Teams data. Items still present in production are downloaded again during those jobs; an item permanently deleted from production cannot be redownloaded by this process.
6. Run a detailed verification
Finish with a detailed repository test:
Test-VBORepository -Repository $repository -DetailedOutputDetailed integrity logs are written under C:ProgramDataVeeamBackup365LogsIntegrityVerification. If the output reports a condition outside the messages documented for KB4874, preserve the logs and contact Veeam Technical Support instead of improvising file-level changes.
How does Veeam Backup & Replication repair a corrupted VM backup file?
Veeam Backup & Replication 13 uses a backup-file health check rather than a manual repository-repair command. It verifies backup metadata with CRC values and checks VM-disk blocks with hashes. The check focuses on the latest restore point.
What happens when corruption is found?
Veeam marks affected restore points and starts a health-check retry that transports replacement blocks from the source datastore. If all retries fail, retry the job manually after confirming that the source VM and datastore are available. A successful retry replaces the damaged blocks; it does not prove that every older restore point is healthy.

Where does the health check run?
The health check starts after other backup and restore operations finish. For network-attached and deduplicating repositories, processing occurs on the gateway server. Keep that gateway geographically and network-wise close to the repository when possible, and verify that it has stable access to both the repository and the source transport path.
What is different about a Linux immutable repository?
Linux immutable repositories do not support in-place repair. When corruption is found there, perform an active full backup to create a new complete chain. If you continue with incremental sessions without that active full, later sessions continue with Error status because the damaged chain cannot be repaired on the immutable target.

When the error appears during guest processing, snapshot creation or VSS unfreeze, inspect the Hyper-V host and guest before touching repository data. A VSS unfreeze failure during snapshot quiescing can produce 0x80004005 even when the repository itself is sound.
Check VSS writers and event logs
- On the affected Windows host or guest, open an elevated Command Prompt.
- Run
vssadmin list writers. - Confirm that every writer reports a stable state with no error. Restart or repair the specific application service named by a failed writer, then reboot the guest if the writer does not recover.
- Review Windows Event Viewer around the Veeam task time: inspect Application and System logs, Hyper-V-VMMS and Hyper-V-Worker channels, VSS events, and storage or NTFS/ReFS errors.
- Run a small test job after the writer and storage errors are cleared.
Do not repeatedly restart all VSS services without reading the writer name and event details; doing so can hide the application or storage condition that caused the timeout.
Inspect checkpoints and AVHDX chains
Look for orphaned checkpoints, differencing disks and an AVHDX chain that does not match the VM configuration. Verify the checkpoint is visible in Hyper-V Manager and that its parent-child disk relationship is intact. A stale checkpoint can keep a merge open, while a locked or missing parent disk can prevent checkpoint creation.
Never merge, move or delete virtual-disk files merely because they look old. Take a current backup first, then use Hyper-V’s supported checkpoint and edit-disk operations or obtain assistance when the chain is inconsistent.
Verify capacity, locks and file-system health
- Check free space on the volume that stores the VM configuration, checkpoints and virtual disks. Snapshot creation and merges need working space in addition to the final disk size.
- Identify antivirus, backup, indexing or other processes holding a lock on the VM files; coordinate exclusions with your security policy rather than disabling protection blindly.
- Check NTFS or ReFS health and the host’s System log for I/O, controller, disk or path errors.
- Confirm that the VM is running on the intended host and that no cluster role, CSV ownership change or failover is occurring during the task.
- Verify Hyper-V integration services and the guest-processing credentials used by Veeam.
Check permissions and policy
Confirm that the Veeam service account and the Hyper-V host have the permissions required for the VM, checkpoint location and repository path. Group Policy, constrained delegation, firewall rules and recent account changes can break a connection while leaving the generic HRESULT in the session. Compare the failing VM with a working VM on the same host to isolate a per-VM permission or configuration difference.
How can proxy, repository and network settings cause the same error?
Veeam can report 0x80004005 when it cannot allocate a permitted proxy, reach a repository extent or connect to Hyper-V integration services. KB1857 identifies proxy availability, disabled proxies, scale-out repository extents, maintenance mode, duplicate paths and free-space conditions as causes of processing-resource and job-start failures.

Review proxies and gateways
- Open the job settings and list the proxies permitted for that job.
- Confirm each proxy is online, not disabled and not in maintenance mode.
- Check that the proxy can reach the source host, repository and gateway required by the job’s transport mode.
- For a scale-out repository, inspect every extent for offline status, capacity exhaustion or a path that no longer resolves.
- Retry a small job after correcting the resource state, then compare its session log with the original failure.
Validate repository definitions and paths
Veeam defines a repository as the storage location for backup files, VM copies and replica metadata. Do not configure two repositories for the same physical location, and do not create nested repository paths. Duplicate or overlapping definitions can make a repository appear unavailable or cause Veeam to select an unexpected path.
Check the repository’s drive letter or mount point, credentials, share permissions, DNS name and free space from the relevant gateway or proxy, not only from your workstation. A path that opens interactively under your account may still be inaccessible to the Veeam service account.

For guest-file recovery connectivity, Veeam lists TCP 6162 and the 2500–3300 range between mount or helper components and repositories. Confirm the port matrix for your installed Veeam version and topology, then test the path in both directions where the design requires it. Firewalls, NAT, endpoint security and stale DNS records can block these connections while the session reports only the generic code.

Use the phase identified in the session to choose the next escalation package rather than repeating the same repair. For a Microsoft 365 repository, include the initial and detailed Test-VBORepository output, repair-session status and integrity-verification logs. For a VM health-check failure, include the affected restore point, retry results, repository type and gateway details. For a Hyper-V or VSS failure, include VSS writer output, event-log timestamps, checkpoint and AVHDX information, storage health and the exact guest-processing step.
- If only one VM fails, compare its checkpoint, credentials, integration services and disk chain with a working VM on the same host.
- If every job using one repository fails, prioritize repository path, capacity, permissions, extent state and gateway connectivity.
- If failures began after a host, driver, firewall or policy change, test the changed component before rebuilding backup data.
- If a documented repair reports an unlisted condition, stop destructive experimentation and contact Veeam Technical Support with the preserved logs.
The practical rule is simple: confirm the complete code, identify the product and failed phase, protect the source, and then use the repair supported for that phase. A repository repair cannot fix a VSS writer, and a health-check retry cannot repair a Linux immutable chain.
