0x80070057 means “The parameter is incorrect.” It is a generic Windows error, not a diagnosis of a particular video problem. When Media Player reports unsupported encoding settings after a restore, the cause may be the app, a missing codec, a Windows component, an incomplete video copy, or the restore point or image itself. The practical fix is to preserve the original, test the file in another player, repair Media Player, update codecs and Windows components, and only then investigate file damage or the restore operation.
The title is often written with an extra zero as 0X800700057. Windows uses 0x80070057; use that exact code when searching Event Viewer, support pages, or error logs.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat does Windows error 0x80070057 mean?
Microsoft maps 0x80070057 to ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER, displayed as “The parameter is incorrect.” Windows returns it when an input value, path, setting, disk layout, backup image, or other parameter is unacceptable to the operation that is running. The code does not identify which parameter failed.
That is why the same hexadecimal value can appear during video playback, Windows Update, application setup, System Restore, or System Image Recovery. A Media Player message about unsupported encoding points toward a codec or playback-component problem, but the number alone cannot prove that the MP4 is corrupt. Treat the message as a starting point for isolating the failing layer.

Is 0x80070057 the same as 0X800700057?
No. The commonly documented Windows code has eight hexadecimal digits after the prefix: 0x80070057. 0X800700057 contains an extra zero and is usually a transcription error in a title, screenshot, or search query. Correct the spelling before troubleshooting so that you find guidance for the actual Windows error.
What should I do before repairing or restoring the video?
Protect the only usable copy before changing codecs, resetting an app, or attempting a recovery operation. Microsoft warns that some recovery options can result in data loss, so work from a duplicate whenever possible.
- Copy the video to a local folder. If it is on a phone, camera card, network share, cloud-synced folder, or removable drive, copy it to an internal disk first. Do not overwrite the original during a repair attempt.
- Make a second backup. Use another physical disk, a trusted cloud location, or a USB flash drive with enough capacity. Eject the backup safely after the copy completes.
- Record the file details. Note the filename, extension, approximate size, source device, and when the file was restored or transferred. These details help distinguish a transfer failure from a player configuration problem.
- Do not rename the extension as a “conversion.” Changing
.mp4to.avior another suffix changes only the label; it does not rewrite the encoded video or repair missing data.
How can I tell whether Media Player or the video is at fault?
Use a two-file, two-player test before making changes. This isolates the application from the media file and prevents a generic error code from sending you down the wrong recovery path.
- Open the affected video in another trusted player installed on the same Windows computer.
- Open a known-good video in the Media Player app that showed the error.
- Write down the result for both tests, including whether playback starts, stops immediately, shows a black screen, or displays another message.
| Observation | Likely branch | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Only the current Media Player app fails; another player opens the affected file | Media Player settings, a codec, or a Windows playback component | Repair, then reset Media Player; update Windows, codecs, and graphics drivers. |
| Every player fails on one video | Incomplete transfer or damaged file | Obtain a known-good copy from the original device or backup before considering a repair utility. |
| Many videos fail in Media Player | App, codec, or Windows component issue | Update the system, run the playback troubleshooter, and repair or reset the app. |
| Windows System Restore or System Image Recovery fails | Restore point, image, target disk, or parameter problem | Check the backup and destination disk, then try another restore point or recovery option. |
If the affected file works in another player, leave the file itself untouched while you repair the Windows playback path. If it fails in every player but other videos work, stop repeatedly resetting Media Player; the evidence now points to the file or its transfer.
How do I repair Media Player in Windows?
A repair changes the app installation without immediately discarding its stored data. If repair does not clear the error, reset the app; reset is more disruptive because it returns the app’s settings and data to their defaults.

- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then open the installed-app list if Windows presents one.
- Find and select Media Player.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, wait for Windows to finish, and test the same video again.
- If the error remains, return to the same page and select Reset. Confirm the prompt, reopen Media Player, and repeat the test with the affected file and a known-good file.
This Repair-then-Reset sequence is also the procedure described in a Microsoft Q&A response for the unsupported-encoding and 0x80070057 symptom. That response came from an independent advisor rather than a Microsoft product bulletin, so treat it as practical community guidance rather than a guaranteed fix.
Resetting the app does not rewrite the video stored in your folders. It can, however, remove Media Player’s preferences, library information, or local database. Keep the backup made earlier and be prepared to let the app rebuild its library.
How do I address codec and Windows component problems?
An MP4 is a container; the video and audio streams inside it can use different codecs. Media Player may fail when the required codec is absent, unsupported by that Windows edition, or damaged after a restore. Microsoft’s playback guidance includes checking codecs, updating Windows and graphics drivers, clearing the Media Player database, and running the Media Player troubleshooter.
Check Windows Update first
- Open Settings and select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install available updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it, then retry the two-file playback test.
Updating matters because a restore can return system components to an older state while leaving newer media files on the disk. Do not assume that a successful Windows update will make an unsupported codec playable; it simply removes one class of component mismatch.
Update the graphics driver
Playback can fail when the graphics driver cannot handle the decode path selected by the app. Install the driver offered for your exact graphics hardware and Windows version through a trusted official channel, restart, and test again. If the problem began immediately after a driver change, note that timing before installing another version; it is useful evidence when deciding whether the driver is involved.

Check the required codec
Determine which codec the file uses from the camera, phone, editing program, or a media-information utility. Common examples that can trigger an unsupported-encoding message include HEVC/H.265, AV1, and unusual profile or level settings, but the exact requirement depends on the file. Obtain any needed codec from a reputable source that matches your Windows edition, then retest. If the file is healthy but the codec is not available for your setup, re-encode a working copy to a format your player supports rather than altering the filename extension.
Run the Media Player troubleshooter
Open Windows Settings and search for Troubleshoot. Run the Media Player or video-playback troubleshooter when it is listed for your Windows build, apply only the changes it recommends, restart if prompted, and repeat the same-file and known-good-file tests. Troubleshooter availability and its exact label vary by Windows version, so a missing entry is not itself evidence of a damaged video.
Clear the Media Player database
Microsoft’s playback guidance also recommends clearing the Media Player database when the library or its index is damaged. Use the database-clear or reset option provided by your installed Media Player build; if your build exposes no separate command, the app’s Reset action is the supported way to return its local data to a clean state. Reopen the app and allow it to rebuild before judging the result.
What if the video fails in every player?
When one file fails in every trusted player while other videos open normally, the strongest explanation is an incomplete transfer or file corruption. A player reset or codec installation cannot recreate bytes that were never copied or were damaged on the source device.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Return to the original phone, camera, memory card, external disk, or cloud backup.
- Copy the video again to a different local filename and compare its size with the original backup if one exists.
- Check whether the source device can play the file. If it can, make a fresh copy using a different cable, card reader, or transfer method.
- If no healthy copy exists, preserve the damaged file and consider a repair utility designed for that container and codec. Use it only after the cross-player test indicates file damage, and work on a duplicate.
Do not repeatedly open, export, or overwrite the sole copy in an editor while testing. A repair program may recover playable portions, but success depends on which metadata and media blocks are still present; no generic Windows error code can predict the outcome.

How do I troubleshoot 0x80070057 during System Restore or System Image Recovery?
If “restore” means Windows System Restore or System Image Recovery rather than restoring one video file, switch to a recovery-focused diagnosis. The same code can indicate a bad parameter, an unreadable image, a destination-disk mismatch, or a restore-point problem; it does not prove that the backup image is corrupt.
Verify the restore source
- Confirm that the intended restore point or system-image backup is selected and that it belongs to the computer or installation you are repairing.
- For an image stored on removable media or a network location, check that the drive is connected, readable, and not disconnecting during the scan.
- If the image has multiple parts, make sure every required part is available and presented under the expected path.
Verify the target disk
- Check that the destination disk is connected and has enough usable space for the restore.
- Disconnect unnecessary storage devices so the recovery environment cannot confuse the source and destination volumes.
- If the drive has read errors or repeated connection failures, address the disk or cable before retrying recovery.
Try another restore point or recovery option
Microsoft documents 0x80070057 during a Windows 7 Service Pack 1 restore scan and advises checking the drive and trying another restore point. Apply the same logic to a current recovery attempt: select an earlier or different restore point when one is available, or use another verified system-image backup. If every restore source fails at the same stage, record the exact stage and storage location; that pattern is more informative than the hexadecimal code alone.
Protect personal files before recovery
Recovery operations can change system files, installed applications, settings, or the contents of a target volume. Copy irreplaceable documents and the original video to separate storage before starting, and do not treat a restore point as a substitute for a personal-file backup.
Which fix should I try first?
Use the branch that matches your observation rather than running every procedure at random.
- Only Media Player fails: Repair Media Player, then Reset it if necessary; update Windows, codecs, graphics drivers, and playback components.
- One video fails everywhere: Recover a fresh copy from the source or backup; only then consider a compatible file-repair utility.
- Many videos fail: Treat the issue as an app, codec, or Windows-component problem and use the update, troubleshooter, and app-repair sequence.
- System Restore or image recovery fails: Verify the restore source, target disk, and backup health, then try another restore point or recovery option.
Keep a short record of each test: the file used, the player, the exact message, and whether the behavior changed after a restart. That record prevents you from mistaking a temporary app state for file corruption and gives support staff a reproducible description.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does 0x80070057 mean that my video has been deleted?
No. The code reports an invalid parameter encountered by an operation; it does not indicate that a file was deleted. Check the file’s location and size, then use the cross-player test to determine whether playback or the file itself is failing.
Can I fix the problem by converting the filename from MP4 to another extension?
Renaming changes only the filename suffix and leaves the encoded streams untouched. A real conversion or re-encoding process must read the source successfully and write a new file in a supported format.
Should I use System Restore to repair one unplayable video?
Usually not as a first response. System Restore targets Windows system state, while a damaged or incompletely copied video requires a fresh source copy; use system recovery only when the evidence points to a broader Windows or restore-point problem.
Why can a restored video work on another computer but not this one?
The other computer may have a different Media Player build, codec set, graphics driver, or Windows component version. Compare the two-file tests on the affected PC and repair its playback environment before modifying the working copy.
