Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFirst work out whether the problem is low or frozen client frame rate, delayed world responses, or trouble connecting: each points to a different part of the setup. Compare another server, test without non-vanilla mods, and check client resources before changing hardware. If the world alone responds slowly while your frame rate is normal, ask the server owner to inspect server performance.
Identify what “lag” looks like
Vintage Story’s official Debugging Performance Issues guide distinguishes client lag from server lag. Client lag is low frame rate or a frozen image. Server lag can show up as a disconnected icon, blocks reappearing after you interact with them, animals that stop moving, or delayed drops after breaking blocks. These signs help narrow down where to look, but do not prove the cause.
- Low FPS or a frozen screen: investigate the client PC and its graphics workload.
- Normal FPS but delayed world actions: ask the server owner to check server performance; network routing can also affect responsiveness.
- Unable to join or frequent disconnects: check version compatibility, firewall access, whitelist status, and routing.
The official sources do not publish a statistic for how many players experience multiplayer lag, so there is no reliable prevalence figure to give.
Find out whether it is your client or one server
Join another multiplayer server, including the Official Public Test Server if it is available to you, and compare the same kind of activity. If other servers behave normally, the issue may be specific to the original server or the route between you and it. If multiple servers stutter in the same way, focus first on your client settings and resources.

Distance can matter: the official Troubleshooting Guide notes that latency may occur when players connect from a different continent than the hosted server. It gives no latency threshold, so use the comparison rather than a guessed ping cutoff.
If the picture stutters or freezes
Reduce client-side load
- Close other applications that are using graphics resources, and check that you have not accidentally started duplicate game processes.
- Lower graphics settings and view distance, then check whether the frame rate improves.
- Temporarily turn off shader mods and recording software to see whether either changes the symptoms.
- Check memory use while playing. The current Vintage Story System Requirements page lists 8 GB RAM for its minimum client configuration and 16 GB for recommended and optimum configurations; these are client requirements, not server-capacity figures.
- Update your graphics drivers. The requirements page specifically advises using the latest graphics-card drivers if you encounter lag.
The same requirements page describes its minimum target as around 25 FPS on low graphics settings without mods, its recommended target as around 30 FPS on medium quality, and its optimum target as 60+ FPS on high or very high settings with fewer than 20 mods. These are setup targets, not guarantees for every PC, world, or multiplayer server.

Test without non-vanilla mods
Create a new test world and disable non-vanilla mods, leaving the required vanilla mods enabled as the troubleshooting guide advises. If the problem disappears, re-enable third-party mods gradually to identify a conflict. The guide mentions a mod-related connection issue for version 1.16.5 specifically; that historical report should not be treated as confirmation of a current-version problem.
If the world responds slowly but FPS is normal
Share the symptom and when it happens with the server owner. If they control the server, the official debugging guide documents server tick logging with /debug logticks 100. Let the logging run while the lag occurs, inspect server-main.txt in the logs folder, and run the same command again to turn logging off. This is a diagnostic tool, not a fix by itself.

The guide also gives client-side logging commands for frame-time spikes: use .debug logticks 20 if your usual frame rate is above 60 FPS, or .debug logticks 40 if it is usually above 30 FPS. Those commands help investigate client spikes; they do not establish that the server is at fault.
Consider save pauses and server settings
The troubleshooting guide says autosaving every few minutes can cause a 1–2 second pause. It describes that pause as unavoidable if autosave is used to protect progress, and says a fast CPU and SSD can improve it without eliminating it. The debugging guide recommends keeping the savegame on an SSD.

The debugging guide’s server tuning values were last verified for game version 1.19, so check current documentation before editing configuration for a newer version. For that documented version, it lists these optional adjustments:
- Reduce
MaxChunkRadiusto 10 or lower. - Set
TickTimeto 40 or 50. The guide says this lowers server tick rate from 30 TPS to 25 or 20 TPS, respectively. - Set
DefaultEntityTrackingRangeto 3; the guide describes this as reducing the active distance from 128 to 96 blocks.
These settings trade performance demands against simulation frequency or the distance at which entities are active. They are server-owner choices, not client settings, and the documented values may not apply unchanged to current versions.

If you cannot connect or keep disconnecting
- Confirm the client and server are running matching game versions.
- Check that the firewall allows the relevant Vintage Story executable.
- Ask the owner whether the server uses a whitelist and whether you have been added.
- For a public server hosted from someone’s home, the owner may need port forwarding or a VPN setup.
These checks address joining and connection problems; they do not resolve slow server ticks or low client FPS.
When a server owner should change hosting
Consider a hosting change only after symptoms point to the server setup—for example, if multiple players see delayed world responses and the owner’s diagnostics indicate server load. Vintage Story describes three broad options on its Hosting your own game server page:
| Option | Best suited to | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Local hosting | Players on the same network | Free, but the host PC must stay on; it is not the same as an internet server for remote players. |
| Paid internet hosting | Owners who want the world available while their PC is off or prefer simpler setup | Costs money; the official page says setup is simplified, but does not establish current provider prices or plans. |
| Free internet hosting | Owners willing to manage their own internet-hosted setup | Can require a strong connection, extra hardware or software, and manual configuration. |
For a normal survival world, the official hosting page gives a rough, conservative dedicated-server estimate of 1 GB base memory plus 300 MB per player, and recommends four CPU threads. Treat that as a rough estimate from the publisher, not a guaranteed capacity calculator.
Before choosing a location or service, consider where players are relative to the server, expected capacity, mod support, uptime, setup effort, and cost. The official information cited here does not verify current hosting-provider plans or prices. Also check current setup instructions: the dedicated-server guide notes that version 1.20 and later enables whitelisting by default for dedicated servers.
