WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR (stop code 0x00000124) is a fatal hardware-error stop, not an ordinary app crash. On a Lenovo laptop or desktop, begin by protecting your files, then install pending Windows updates, undo a change that preceded the crash, return BIOS settings to their defaults, and run Lenovo’s diagnostics for your boot state. Test memory, the processor, storage, power and cooling; a repeatable component failure or a machine that cannot complete diagnostics needs Lenovo support or an authorized repair provider.

Microsoft describes the blue screen as Windows shutting down suddenly after a hardware error. Heat, defective hardware, failing memory or a processor can trigger it; overclocking, cooling faults and, less commonly, a driver can also contribute. The sequence below separates recoverable software changes from faults that require component service.

What does WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR mean on a Lenovo computer?

WHEA is the Windows Hardware Error Architecture. It records hardware error information and distinguishes corrected conditions, nonfatal uncorrected conditions and fatal uncorrected conditions. A fatal uncorrected condition cannot be recovered safely, so Windows bug-checks and displays 0x00000124. The stored error record can help technicians identify the failing area.

Microsoft’s description is direct: “When a hardware error occurs on a Windows device, it shuts down suddenly and might display a blue screen/stop error with the following error message: WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR.” The code therefore deserves hardware testing even when the computer starts normally afterward. It is not, by itself, proof that one particular part has failed.

Why can it appear after a Windows update?

An update can coincide with a driver change, altered firmware interaction or a previously marginal component becoming unstable. Lenovo’s HT512027 guidance addresses the symptom after an upgrade and was published on March 10, 2021; the page was last modified July 16, 2025. If crashes began immediately after an update, use the recovery steps in this guide before replacing hardware.

What should I do before troubleshooting the Lenovo blue screen?

  1. Back up while Windows still starts. Copy documents, game saves, photos and other irreplaceable data to another drive or cloud storage. Repeated forced shutdowns and firmware work can make an existing storage problem harder to recover from.
  2. Write down the exact stop code and timing. Note whether the crash happens during startup, gaming, sleep/wake, charging, or a particular application, and whether it followed an update or hardware installation.
  3. Disconnect nonessential hardware. Remove newly added USB devices, docks, expansion cards and external drives while testing. Keep the keyboard, display and power adapter connected.
  4. Do not overclock. Return CPU, memory and graphics settings to stock values before judging stability. An overclock can make a healthy component fail the same way as defective hardware.

Which fix should I try first based on my Lenovo’s boot state?

Your boot state determines whether to use Windows recovery, a blue-screen diagnostic environment or an offline UEFI test. Choose the narrowest path that matches what you can see.

What you see Best next step What it tells you
Windows reaches the desktop Back up, run Windows Update, then Lenovo Windows diagnostics Separates update/driver issues from component-test failures
Windows fails after a recent update but recovery menus open System Restore or Startup Repair, then remove the triggering change Tests whether the new software state caused the crashes
Only a blue screen appears, but the machine can boot external media Lenovo Linux bootable diagnostics Runs component checks outside the installed Windows environment
Windows will not boot at all Lenovo UEFI bootable diagnostics from a USB flash drive Tests hardware without relying on the Windows installation
A diagnostic test returns a repeatable error code Record the code and contact Lenovo support or an authorized repair provider Provides evidence for a part-level repair decision

How do I install Windows updates and check drivers?

Windows Update is Microsoft’s first software step because it delivers current Windows fixes and many device drivers.

  1. Open Settings from the Start menu.
  2. Choose Windows Update (on some Windows 10 systems, Update & Security > Windows Update).
  3. Select Check for updates, install everything offered, and restart when requested.
  4. Return to the same page and repeat the check until no further updates are offered. Keep the Lenovo connected to reliable AC power during restarts.

If the blue screen names a device, update that device’s driver manually after Windows Update. Open Device Manager, expand the relevant category, right-click the device, choose Update driver, and follow the prompts. If the problem began with that driver, use Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver when the button is available, or uninstall the recent device/driver from the recovery environment and install the Lenovo-provided version once stable.

How do I undo a Windows update, driver or app that preceded 0x124?

A clear before-and-after relationship is useful evidence. Do not remove unrelated software at random; reverse the most recent change first.

Use System Restore

  1. Open Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now (Windows 10 may show Update & Security > Recovery).
  2. In the recovery menu select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore.
  3. Choose a restore point dated before the crashes, review the affected programs, and let Windows restart.

System Restore changes system files, drivers and registry settings; it does not replace personal-file backups. If encryption asks for a recovery key, retrieve that key before proceeding.

Try Startup Repair when Windows cannot load

  1. Enter Advanced options from the automatic-repair screen or Windows installation media.
  2. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
  3. Allow the scan to finish, then test a normal boot once. If it fails, return to Advanced options rather than repeatedly forcing power-offs.

Lenovo’s HT512027 page points to Microsoft’s update or restore guidance for post-upgrade WHEA symptoms. If recovery succeeds but 0x124 returns at stock settings, move to hardware diagnostics instead of repeatedly restoring the same system image.

How do I reset Lenovo BIOS settings safely?

Incorrect firmware settings, memory profiles and overclocking can make hardware unstable. Intel’s troubleshooting guidance recommends entering BIOS, loading default settings, removing recently installed hardware or drivers, and using Safe Mode when normal startup fails.

  1. Shut down completely. Turn the Lenovo on and repeatedly press the model’s BIOS setup key shown on screen (commonly F1, F2 or, on some models, the Novo button).
  2. In BIOS/UEFI, choose Load Setup Defaults, Load Optimized Defaults or the equivalent Lenovo command. Confirm, then choose Save and Exit.
  3. Do not enable memory overclocking profiles or custom voltage settings while diagnosing.
  4. If you recently installed RAM, an SSD, graphics hardware, a dock or another internal device, power off, disconnect AC, and remove or reseat that change according to the model’s service instructions. A desktop should be unplugged before opening its case.

A BIOS reset can change boot order, virtualization and other preferences. Record custom settings first, and do not interrupt a firmware update. If the Lenovo cannot remain powered on long enough to enter BIOS, skip to offline diagnostics or service.

Which Lenovo diagnostic should I use?

Lenovo’s diagnostic choice depends on whether Windows boots, only a blue screen is available, or Windows cannot boot. The Lenovo diagnostics page was last modified January 20, 2026.

When Windows starts: Lenovo Windows diagnostics

  1. Save work and close applications.
  2. Open Lenovo’s built-in or support-provided Windows diagnostics for your model.
  3. Run the full available scan, not only a quick check, and record every component name and error code.
  4. Restart and see whether the same test fails again. A repeatable code is stronger evidence than a single transient crash.

When a blue screen blocks normal Windows: Lenovo Linux bootable diagnostics

Use another computer to obtain the Lenovo Linux bootable diagnostic image for the exact model and prepare bootable media according to Lenovo’s instructions. Boot the affected computer from that media through the one-time boot menu, then run the memory, processor, storage and other offered tests. A USB flash drive enables this offline test; it is a test medium, not a repair, and its contents may be erased when the boot media is created.

When Windows will not boot: Lenovo UEFI bootable diagnostics

  1. Prepare Lenovo’s UEFI diagnostic media on a USB flash drive using another working computer and the model-specific Lenovo instructions.
  2. Insert the drive into the powered-off Lenovo.
  3. Open the one-time boot menu (often F12 or the Novo button) and select the UEFI USB entry.
  4. Run the complete hardware test and photograph or write down each error identifier before exiting.

UEFI diagnostics run independently of the installed Windows files, so a failed test points toward hardware or firmware rather than a damaged Windows installation. If all tests pass but Windows still crashes, continue with driver and recovery checks and note exactly which tests passed.

How do I test memory, the processor, storage, power and cooling?

Prioritize the parts Microsoft and Intel identify most often: heat, memory, the processor, power delivery and storage. Test one change at a time so the result remains meaningful.

Memory

Run Windows Memory Diagnostic when Windows starts: press Windows key + R, enter mdsched.exe, choose to restart and check now, and let the test complete. For intermittent crashes, repeat with Lenovo’s offline diagnostic because an in-Windows pass does not exclude every physical or slot-related fault. If errors follow one module or slot, power down and have the memory reseated or replaced.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Processor

Run Lenovo’s processor test or Intel’s processor diagnostic where applicable, using stock BIOS settings. A processor test that fails repeatedly, especially outside Windows, is service evidence; do not continue stress testing a machine that is overheating or shutting down.

Storage

Run Lenovo’s storage test and note whether the same drive or controller reports an error. Back up immediately if the test indicates a disk problem. A clean storage test does not clear memory, power or thermal causes.

Power and cooling

  • Use the correct Lenovo AC adapter and inspect the cable, connector and dock for damage.
  • Ensure vents are unobstructed and that fans can spin. Excess heat is a documented WHEA trigger.
  • On a desktop, check that internal power connectors and cooling hardware are seated; have a technician perform this if you are not comfortable working inside the case.
  • Stop using the machine for demanding workloads if it repeatedly powers off, becomes exceptionally hot or emits unusual fan or electrical noise.

Intel also recommends checking the power supply and, when possible, testing with known-good hardware. Substitute only one component at a time and use parts compatible with the exact Lenovo model.

What if the Lenovo still crashes after every test passes?

Confirm that BIOS settings remain at defaults, no recent hardware is installed, and Windows and the affected device drivers are current. Then try Safe Mode from Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings; if the crashes stop there, a normal-startup driver or service remains suspect. If 0x124 occurs in Safe Mode or in Lenovo’s offline environment, software is less likely to be the root cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record the stop code, dates, operating-system version, BIOS version, workload, temperature symptoms, recent changes and every diagnostic result. Include photographs of screens and exact error identifiers. This record lets Lenovo support or an authorized repair provider decide whether to service memory, the processor, storage, power delivery, cooling or the system board instead of repeating generic resets.

When should I stop troubleshooting and contact Lenovo?

  • A component diagnostic returns the same error code more than once.
  • The computer crashes at BIOS defaults with no added hardware or overclock.
  • It cannot complete Windows, Linux or UEFI diagnostics, or cannot stay powered on.
  • You smell overheating, see physical damage, or the battery or adapter behaves abnormally.
  • Your files are not backed up and the machine is becoming less stable.

Provide the model and serial information, proof of purchase or warranty details if available, and the diagnostic codes. Do not keep reinstalling Windows to mask a failure that occurs in offline tests.

As an optional shortcut for this driver and hardware troubleshooting, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices for outdated, corrupted or missing drivers, install official drivers, show current and recommended versions, create driver backups and restores, and schedule scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 and offers a 2-day free trial without a credit card before subscription; results vary and it cannot repair every hardware fault.

What is the safest final decision for a Lenovo 0x124 crash?

Use recovery tools when the failure clearly follows an update or driver, but treat any repeatable 0x124—especially one reproduced by Lenovo UEFI or Linux diagnostics—as a hardware-service case. Back up first, test at BIOS defaults, keep the diagnostic codes, and escalate rather than repeatedly forcing the computer to run through crashes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a virus cause WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR on a Lenovo PC?

The 0x124 stop code describes a fatal hardware condition reported through WHEA; Microsoft’s listed causes center on heat, defective hardware, memory and the processor. Malware is not established by the code itself, so run your normal security checks separately rather than treating the blue screen as proof of an infection.

Will reinstalling Windows permanently fix Lenovo error 0x124?

A clean installation can remove a damaged software state, but it cannot repair failing memory, a processor, power delivery, cooling or another component. If the crash appears in UEFI or Linux diagnostics, reinstalling Windows is unlikely to address the cause and may erase useful evidence.

Is it safe to keep gaming on a Lenovo that shows WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR once?

Avoid demanding workloads until you have backed up your files and run the appropriate diagnostics. A single event can be transient, but repeated shutdowns, excessive heat or a diagnostic error warrants stopping use and arranging service.

What information will Lenovo support ask for?

Have the exact model, serial number, Windows edition, BIOS version, date and trigger of each crash, and every Lenovo diagnostic code ready. Photos of the stop screen and test results can prevent repeated basic troubleshooting.
