Windows does not verify 0x800704sd as written in the title. First copy the code directly from the original dialog, setup screen, update history, or log; the character that looks like a lowercase “s” may actually be the number 5. If the message is really 0x8007045D, Microsoft describes it as “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.” That means an input/output request failed, not that Windows has identified one specific bad drive, cable, port, card, reader, burner, or disc. The correct repair depends on what Windows was doing when the message appeared.

- Try another disc or blank medium. Use media that the burner documentation identifies as supported. A single damaged or incompatible disc can fail even when the burner works with other media.
- Check the burner’s documentation. Confirm that the disc type and capacity are supported by that model. If the manufacturer provides firmware instructions, follow those instructions for the exact burner model and Windows configuration.
- Use a supported burn speed. Select a speed listed as supported for the burner and media instead of assuming the highest available setting is appropriate.
- Repeat with a known-compatible disc. If another compatible disc succeeds, the first medium or its compatibility is the more useful lead. If multiple supported discs fail, continue investigating the burner and its connection rather than buying a drive solely because of the code.
Do not generalize this advice to file copies or memory-card transfers. The relevant path changes with the operation.
How do you fix 0x8007045D during a micro SD or removable-media transfer?
For a micro SD case, Microsoft Q&A guidance recommends testing whether the same card produces errors on another computer. That comparison helps separate the card from the current computer or reader, but it is not a guarantee of the failed component.

- Stop the transfer and note the direction. Write down whether Windows was reading from the card or writing to it, and whether a USB reader or adapter was being used.
- Safely remove and reconnect the media. Reseat the card and its adapter or reader, then retry with a small, noncritical file first.
- Test the same card on another computer. Use the same type of read or write operation where possible. If the error follows the card, the card or its adapter becomes a stronger suspect; if it occurs only on the original computer, investigate that computer’s reader, connection, or software environment.
- Preserve readable files. Copy important data to a separate location before attempting any erase, reformat, or replacement decision.
A successful test on another computer does not prove that the first reader is permanently defective, and a failure on two computers does not tell you whether the card or adapter is at fault. It narrows the path that needs further testing.
How do you troubleshoot the error during a drive-to-drive copy?

- Label source and destination. Note the drive letters, whether each drive is internal or external, and any cable, hub, enclosure, or adapter between them.
- Check whether the failure is directional. If the source remains readable, test a small, replaceable file to a different known-good destination. If the destination is writable, test a small file in the opposite direction without overwriting important data.
- Isolate removable connections. Reconnect the external drive directly to the computer rather than through an unneeded hub or adapter, then repeat the small test. A different cable or port can be used as a comparison, but a successful retry does not by itself identify which connection was responsible.
- Back up before destructive actions. If files can still be read, copy them elsewhere before considering formatting, repartitioning, or other operations that can erase data.
If the same source fails when writing to several known-good destinations, focus on the source read path. If several sources fail when writing to one destination, focus on the destination path. These are diagnostic comparisons, not proof that a drive must be replaced.
