The code in the title, 0X080070057, appears to contain an extra zero. Windows documents two different errors that are commonly confused here: 0x80070057, meaning “The parameter is incorrect,” and 0x80070005 (E_ACCESSDENIED), meaning that Windows Update cannot access a required file, folder, or registry entry. Check the complete code in the error dialog or Windows Update history before changing permissions. The correct fix depends on whether the failure happened during Windows Update, a Windows installation, or an upgrade.
Use the first section below only after confirming the code and the operation that failed. Do not treat 0x80070057 as an access-denied error, and do not grant broad permissions unless logs identify a specific permission problem.

Which Windows error code do you actually have?
Read the complete hexadecimal value, including every digit after 0x. The title’s 0X080070057 is not the documented eight-digit form of either error, so copying it from memory can send troubleshooting in the wrong direction.
| Confirmed code | Microsoft’s description | Typical context covered here | Start with |
|---|---|---|---|
0x80070057 |
The parameter is incorrect | Windows Update, installation, or upgrade | Match the steps to the operation that failed |
0x80070005 (E_ACCESSDENIED) |
The update process cannot access required files, folders, or registry entries | Windows Update access-denied failures | Back up, inspect logs, then repair the diagnosed permission or update component |
A code is not enough by itself. Note the update name or installation task, the point at which it failed, and whether the dialog explicitly says “Access denied.” Keep a screenshot or write the value down before restarting.

What does error 0x80070057 mean?
0x80070057 means “The parameter is incorrect” in Microsoft’s Windows installation and upgrade guidance. It is not the access-denied code. A Windows Update failure can also display this value, but the practical next step differs from an installation or upgrade failure.
If it appeared during Windows Update
Use this route when the failure occurred in Settings while downloading or installing a normal Windows update.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Restart Windows. A pending restart can leave an update operation in an incomplete state. After signing back in, open Windows Update and check for updates again.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter. Open the Windows troubleshooting settings, select the Windows Update troubleshooter, allow it to apply any offered correction, and retry the update.
- Check available disk space. Clear enough space for the update’s download and temporary installation files. Do not assume that a cleanup alone repairs the error; the purpose of this check is to remove a storage constraint from the diagnosis.
- Confirm that Windows Update services are running. In the Services management console, check the update-related services and start any that are stopped. If a service repeatedly stops, record that behavior instead of repeatedly changing unrelated permissions.
- Run System File Checker. Open an elevated Command Prompt and run
sfc /scannow. Let the scan reach 100 percent, note its result, restart if requested, and try Windows Update again.
If it appeared during Windows Setup or an upgrade
When Setup or an in-place upgrade produced the code, Microsoft’s installation guidance emphasizes system-file checking, a clean boot, and verifying that Windows Update services are running.
- Run SFC first. In an elevated Command Prompt, enter
sfc /scannowand wait for completion. - Perform a clean boot. Use System Configuration to prevent non-Microsoft services and startup programs from loading, restart, and run the installation or upgrade again. A clean boot is a diagnostic condition, not a permanent configuration: after testing, restore normal startup and re-enable items methodically.
- Check Windows Update services. Even when Setup is the visible task, the update infrastructure may be required. Confirm the services are available and running before retrying.
If the same value returns, record whether it occurs at the same percentage or phase. That detail helps distinguish a repeatable setup parameter problem from a transient update state.
What does Windows Update error 0x80070005 mean?
Microsoft describes 0x80070005 (E_ACCESSDENIED) this way: “Windows Update error 0x80070005 (E_ACCESSDENIED) occurs if the update process can’t access required files, folders, or registry entries.” Possible causes include missing TrustedInstaller permissions on the WinSxS or SoftwareDistribution folders, incorrect permissions on the Component Based Servicing registry key, security software locking update files, missing SYSTEM permissions on the Windows folder, or Group Policy and other management software restricting writes.
The Windows directory is normally C:Windows, but Microsoft’s procedure uses %windir% so that the instructions follow the installation’s actual location. Avoid taking ownership of system folders or granting Everyone full control before you know which object is failing.

How should I prepare before repairing 0x80070005?
Permission and component repairs affect protected operating-system resources. Back up personal files and, if possible, create a system image or another recovery option before proceeding. Microsoft’s general Windows Update guidance includes copying important files to removable storage such as a USB drive; the capacity must match the amount of data you need to preserve.
- Save work and close applications that may be using update files.
- Make sure you can sign in with an administrator account when an elevated prompt is required.
- Write down the exact code, update number, and time of failure.
- Do not disable security protection permanently. If a later diagnostic step requires a temporary test, restore protection immediately afterward.
How do I find the file or registry object causing 0x80070005?
Start with logs rather than guessing. The nearby entries often identify the file, folder, registry key, or operation that was denied.
- Generate a readable Windows Update log. Open PowerShell as administrator and run
Get-WindowsUpdateLog. Windows creates a static Windows Update log from the system’s update traces. - Review the generated Windows Update log. Search for
0x80070005,E_ACCESSDENIED, and the timestamp of the failed attempt. Read several lines before and after each match; the surrounding operation is more useful than the code alone. - Check CBS.log. The Component-Based Servicing log can show which servicing action failed. Compare its timestamp with the update failure and look for the named resource or access result.
- Classify the finding. Decide whether the evidence points to WinSxS, SoftwareDistribution, the Component Based Servicing registry key, the Windows directory, a security filter, or a management policy. If no object is identified, do not make broad permission changes; continue with the documented component checks.
How do I repair the permissions identified by the logs?
Microsoft’s dedicated troubleshooting sequence begins with permission checks and resets for the affected update locations. Apply the procedure to the objects identified by your logs, preserving the sequence and cautions in Microsoft’s instructions.
WinSxS and SoftwareDistribution
Check that the TrustedInstaller service account has the required ownership and permissions for the WinSxS and SoftwareDistribution locations. If the documented check shows that permissions are wrong, use Microsoft’s reset procedure for those specific folders. Do not apply a blanket permission grant to the whole system drive.
Component Based Servicing registry key
Inspect the permissions on the Component Based Servicing registry key named in the logs or Microsoft’s procedure. Correct only the missing or incorrect entries identified there, and export the key or otherwise create a recovery point before editing it.
The Windows directory and SYSTEM access
Verify that the SYSTEM account retains the permissions required on %windir%. A missing SYSTEM permission can prevent servicing even when an interactive administrator can browse the folder. Restore the documented permission rather than replacing the folder’s entire access-control list.

Group Policy and management controls
On a work-managed computer, policy or endpoint-management software may intentionally restrict writes. Ask the administrator to review the policy instead of overriding it locally. A local permission reset will not be a reliable fix if management software reapplies the restriction.
How do I reset Windows Update components for 0x80070005?
If the logs and permission checks do not resolve the denial, Microsoft’s next documented stage resets Windows Update components. This is a staged operation, not a license to delete arbitrary system data.
- Stop the update-related services specified in Microsoft’s procedure before changing their working folders.
- Rename SoftwareDistribution and catroot2 as directed. Renaming preserves the old folders for recovery while Windows creates fresh working folders during the next update attempt.
- Start the services again after the renames are complete.
- Retry the update. If it succeeds, leave the renamed folders in place until you have confirmed that the system is stable; if it fails, the previous folders provide useful evidence for further diagnosis.
Do not interrupt a servicing operation or rename folders while an update is actively installing. If a service refuses to stop, record the message and investigate the process holding it rather than forcing unrelated changes.
Should I run DISM and SFC after the component reset?
Yes, Microsoft’s documented sequence proceeds to the Deployment Image Servicing and Management repair command and then System File Checker. Run them from an elevated Command Prompt, allow each command to finish, and restart when Windows requests it.
- Run
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth. - After DISM completes, run
sfc /scannow. - Restart Windows and retry the update.
Keep the result of each command. A successful completion does not prove that every possible cause of an access-denied update has been removed; it tells you how Windows reported the component and file-integrity checks.
Could antivirus or another filter driver be blocking the update?
Third-party security software can lock update files, and filesystem filter drivers can interfere with access. Microsoft’s specific troubleshooting article includes temporarily disabling real-time antivirus protection and checking filesystem filter drivers as part of its investigation.

Return to the evidence. Confirm that the code was copied correctly, identify whether the original task was Windows Update or Setup, and compare fresh log entries with the first failure. A repeated denial on the same object points toward a permission or policy issue; a different object suggests that the first repair changed the failure point.
- Undo temporary clean-boot and security-test changes.
- Keep backups and the generated logs available for support.
- On a work-managed PC, provide the administrator with the code, update identifier, timestamps, and affected object.
- Do not combine multiple untracked registry and permission changes, because that removes the evidence needed to identify the cause.
