Windows error 0x80070422 means the Windows Update service is disabled, stopped, or otherwise not running. The quickest supported fix is to open services.msc, set Windows Update to Automatic, start it, restart the computer, and check for updates again. If that does not hold, run Windows 10’s Windows Update troubleshooter, reset the update cache, and repair the Windows image with DISM followed by System File Checker. The title’s 0X800704022 contains an extra trailing 2; Microsoft’s documented code is 0x80070422, so use that spelling when searching or troubleshooting.
What does Windows error 0x80070422 mean?
Microsoft classifies 0x80070422 as ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED. In practical terms, Windows cannot complete an update check because the Windows Update service has stopped, has been disabled, or is not running when the system requests it. You may see the code while selecting Check for updates, or the Settings page may remain stuck while it tries to scan.

Windows 10’s Settings app does not perform every update operation by itself. It communicates with Update Orchestrator, which in turn communicates with the Windows Update service. If one of those service components stops unexpectedly, scanning can freeze or return this code. Checking the services directly is therefore the right first diagnostic step.
Why the extra digit in the title matters
0X800704022 is commonly a typing or copying error for 0x80070422. Hexadecimal error codes are exact identifiers, so an extra digit can lead you to unrelated search results. Keep the lowercase or uppercase prefix as you prefer, but use the eight-digit code 0x80070422 for this problem.

What should I do before changing Windows Update?
Back up important personal files before resetting update components or repairing system files. The service change is normally reversible, but cache resets and image repairs modify Windows folders and components. A backup gives you a recovery path if the computer loses power or another problem appears during maintenance.
Copy personal files to removable storage
- Connect a USB flash drive or another backup disk.
- Open File Explorer and browse to folders containing documents, photos, saved games, downloads, or other irreplaceable files.
- Select the files and copy them to the removable drive. Open a few copied files afterward to confirm that the backup is readable.
Also make sure you know the sign-in details for your Windows account and have any activation information needed for a later recovery. Do not begin with a clean installation simply because the update check failed; reserve that option for a later escalation after simpler repairs and a verified backup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow do I enable and start the Windows Update service?
This is the first repair to try because it addresses the condition represented by the code directly. You need an account with administrator rights to change the service configuration.
- Press Windows+R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter
services.mscand press Enter. - In the Services window, scroll to Windows Update.
- Double-click Windows Update to open its properties.
- Open the Startup type menu and select Automatic.
- If the service status is Stopped, click Start.
- Click Apply, then OK.
- Close the Services window and restart the computer.
- After Windows starts again, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
What result should I expect?
If the service was the only problem, Windows Update should begin scanning instead of immediately returning 0x80070422. The first scan can take a few minutes. Let it finish before deciding that the repair failed, and keep the computer connected to power during the check.
What if Windows Update stops again?
Note the exact behavior rather than repeatedly clicking Start. If the service starts and then stops, continue with the built-in troubleshooter below. A repeated stop indicates that the service state alone is not the whole problem, so resetting the update components or repairing system files may be necessary.
How do I run the Windows Update troubleshooter in Windows 10?
The built-in troubleshooter performs lower-risk checks and can correct common update configuration problems. Run it after setting the service to Automatic and restarting.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Open Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Choose Troubleshoot in the left pane.
- Select Additional troubleshooters.
- Choose Windows Update, then click Run the troubleshooter.
- Follow the prompts and allow Windows to apply any recommended correction.
- Restart the computer if prompted, then return to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
If the troubleshooter reports that it could not identify a problem, that does not prove the service is healthy; it simply means its automated checks found no correction to apply. Proceed to the component reset when the same code remains.
How do I reset Windows Update components manually?
Windows stores downloaded update data and cryptographic catalog information in the SoftwareDistribution and catroot2 folders. Renaming those folders makes Windows create fresh versions. This procedure requires an elevated Command Prompt and changes update cache folders rather than deleting your personal files.
Open an elevated Command Prompt
- Open the Start menu and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
Stop services, rename the caches, and start services again
Run each command separately and wait for the prompt to return before entering the next one:
net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
ren %systemroot%softwaredistribution softwaredistribution.bak
ren %systemroot%system32catroot2 catroot2.bak
net start bits
net start wuauserv
bits is the Background Intelligent Transfer Service, which helps transfer update files. wuauserv is the Windows Update service. The two ren commands preserve the old folders with a .bak suffix while allowing Windows to build clean cache directories.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →How should I handle a “service was not started” message?
If net stop reports that a service was not started, there is nothing to stop; continue with the remaining commands. If a rename reports that a file is in use, verify that both services stopped, close other update-related windows, and run the command again from the elevated prompt.
Finish the reset
- Close Command Prompt after both services report that they started successfully, or after the commands have completed without a blocking error.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and allow Windows to rebuild its local update data.
The first scan after a reset may take longer because Windows has to recreate local metadata. Do not manually delete the renamed folders while troubleshooting; keep them until the update process is working and your backup is confirmed.
How do I repair Windows system files with DISM and SFC?
Use Microsoft’s documented escalation when the service and cache repairs do not resolve the code. DISM repairs the Windows image that supplies system components; System File Checker then checks protected system files against that repaired image. Run DISM first and SFC second in an elevated Command Prompt.
- Open Command Prompt with Run as administrator.
- Enter the following command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for DISM to finish. It can appear to pause at a percentage for an extended period; closing the window interrupts the repair.
- At the same elevated prompt, run:
sfc /scannow
Allow the verification to reach 100 percent. Restart Windows when both commands are complete, then try Windows Update again. If either command reports that it could not complete, record the exact message before attempting more invasive recovery; the message can distinguish a component-store problem from a permissions or storage issue.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What advanced recovery options are safe if the error persists?
Escalate cautiously. Microsoft notes that advanced procedures require command-line comfort and administrator permissions. A clean restart, a disk check, or a clean installation should be considered only after the service repair, troubleshooter, cache reset, and DISM/SFC sequence, and only after confirming that important files are backed up.
Clean restart
A clean restart starts Windows with a reduced set of startup programs and services. It can help identify whether another startup component is interfering with update services, but it changes the normal startup environment. Record which settings you change so you can restore them after testing.
Disk check
A disk check is reasonable when Windows reports file-system errors, the computer has suffered unexpected shutdowns, or files repeatedly become corrupted. Back up first and expect the check to take time, especially on a large or failing drive.

Clean installation
A clean installation removes the existing Windows installation and therefore carries the greatest risk of data loss and application reconfiguration. Confirm backups, hardware compatibility, account access, and activation information before considering it. It is not a proportionate first response to 0x80070422.
Does fixing 0x80070422 restore Windows 10 updates permanently?
Repairing the service can restore the ability to scan and install updates that are available to the computer, but it does not extend Microsoft’s support lifecycle. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, ordinary free updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer generally supplied through the standard Windows 10 support channel.
That distinction matters when evaluating the result. A successful repair means the service is functioning; it does not promise that new updates will continue to be published for your edition or that a failed scan is caused only by a local setting. Check Microsoft’s current Windows lifecycle information for the edition and support status that apply to your PC before spending time on repeated scans.
What should I check if the code returns after all repairs?
- Open
services.mscagain and confirm that Windows Update still shows Automatic rather than reverting to a disabled setting. - Confirm that the computer was restarted after the service change and after the component reset.
- Run the troubleshooter once more and record any specific finding instead of dismissing it.
- Review the exact DISM and SFC completion messages; an incomplete repair is different from a clean result followed by an update-scan failure.
- Verify that your Windows 10 edition is past its support date before treating the lack of a newly offered update as another instance of the service error.
- Use a clean restart, disk check, or clean installation only after preserving backups and documenting the changes already made.
As an optional shortcut after these manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, and shared DLL files, while also offering settings tweaks, temporary and cache cleanup, privacy checks, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding, and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; a category-based free trial lasts at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 0x80070422 the same as 0X800704022?
They are not identical strings. The Windows Update code documented by Microsoft is 0x80070422; the longer form has an extra trailing digit and is usually a transcription error.
Can this error indicate that my computer has malware?
The code itself identifies a Windows service state and is not proof of an infection. If you have separate security symptoms, use your existing antivirus or security product independently of the Windows Update repair.
Why does Windows still show no update after the service starts?
A running service only restores the scanning mechanism. Windows 10’s support lifecycle ended on October 14, 2025, so the edition, device eligibility, and current Microsoft availability determine whether a new update is actually offered.
Can I remove the .bak folders immediately after the reset?
Keep the renamed folders until Windows Update works normally and your backup is verified. If you later need disk space, remove old cache data only after closing update-related processes and confirming that no rollback is needed.
