Windows error 0x80080005 means CO_E_SERVER_EXEC_FAILURE, which Microsoft defines as “Server execution failed.” It is not the same code as Windows’ access-denied error 0x80070005. When 0x80080005 appears during Windows Update, the practical repair path is to back up your files, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, verify administrator access and connectivity, reset the update cache and services, then repair Windows’ component store and system files with DISM and SFC. Because the HRESULT can be raised by more than one application, first confirm which program produced it instead of assuming every occurrence is a Windows Update failure.
What does Windows error 0x80080005 mean?
0x80080005 is a COM/OLE server-execution failure. Microsoft’s MS-ERREF reference identifies the code as CO_E_SERVER_EXEC_FAILURE and gives the description “Server execution failed.” A COM server is a Windows component or application process that another program asks to start or use. The HRESULT says that requested server did not execute successfully; it does not identify one universal broken file, service or permission.

How do I clear the Windows Update cache safely?
A damaged or inconsistent update cache can prevent an update operation from completing. Microsoft’s basic procedure is to stop the Windows Update service, remove the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, and start the service again. Clearing this cache affects downloaded update data; it does not target personal documents. The backup step remains important because Microsoft recommends it before troubleshooting any update failure.
How do I reset all Windows Update components from Command Prompt?
For a deeper reset, Microsoft Learn documents stopping the update-related services, renaming the two working folders, and starting the services again. Renaming preserves the old folders as .old directories while Windows creates fresh working locations.

How do DISM and SFC repair files behind 0x80080005?
When the update reset does not resolve the failure, repair the Windows component store and protected system files. Run DISM first, then SFC, from an elevated Command Prompt. The order matters because SFC can use the component store that DISM repairs.
- Open Command Prompt with administrator rights.
- Run the component-store repair and wait for it to complete:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth- After DISM finishes, run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow- Let SFC reach 100 percent. Restart Windows if it requests a restart.

What if the code is actually 0x80070005 (“Access Denied”)?
0x80070005 is a separate access-denied HRESULT. Microsoft describes it as occurring when the update process cannot access required files, folders or registry entries. Documented causes include incorrect permissions on WinSxS, SoftwareDistribution or the Component Based Servicing registry key; third-party security software locking files; missing SYSTEM control on %windir%; and Group Policy or a management agent restricting the operation.
Do not apply this branch merely because a search result used the word “denied.” Verify that the displayed code is exactly 0x80070005. If it is, Microsoft documents the following permission reset from an elevated Command Prompt:

For a confirmed 0x80070005 failure that survives the permission sequence, Microsoft advises checking third-party antivirus software and non-Microsoft file-system filter drivers. Do not unload a file-system driver unless you understand what it does and how to restore it; Microsoft specifically cautions against removing or disabling a driver without understanding the impact. Microsoft directs readers to Microsoft Support when the supported reset, repair and interference checks do not resolve the issue. Azure virtual machines have additional, VM-specific reset and repair procedures; do not assume a desktop repair sequence is the right treatment for an Azure VM.
