If Windows 10 will not download or install an update, first back up important files, run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter, restart the computer, and check for updates again. Then use the exact error code or symptom to choose a targeted fix instead of applying every repair at random. Check your internet connection, available storage, restart status, update service, cache and drivers as appropriate. There is an important 2026 qualification: Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, so a local repair can solve a failed update attempt but cannot restore the free updates, technical assistance or security fixes that ended with support.

What does “Windows 10 is not updating” mean after support ended?

Windows Update problems can look different, and the distinction determines the safest next step. A download may remain at 0%, an installation may stop at a particular percentage, an update may roll back after restarting, or Windows may report that the PC is up to date even though another computer has a newer release. Record exactly what you see, including any hexadecimal error code and whether the failure occurs during downloading, installation or reboot.

Microsoft says updates are not offered to every device simultaneously. Readiness and hardware or software compatibility can affect when an update appears, so “up to date” does not always mean every machine has the same build. More importantly, Microsoft’s Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft states that after that date it no longer provides free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance or security fixes for Windows 10, and recommends moving to Windows 11. Troubleshooting remains useful for a damaged local installation or an update that was already available, but it cannot make an unsupported operating system receive a new security release.

What should I do before troubleshooting Windows Update?

Protect your data and capture the evidence before changing services or deleting update files. Microsoft advises backing up personal files before trying its broader solutions.

  1. Back up important files. Copy documents, photographs, saved games and other irreplaceable data to an external drive or a trusted cloud location. If the computer is unstable, prioritise the files you cannot recreate.
  2. Write down the symptom. Note whether the download is stuck, installation fails, the system reverts changes, or Windows says it is current. Photograph or copy the complete error message.
  3. Check the Windows edition and architecture. Open Settings > System > About and record whether the installation is 32-bit or 64-bit. This matters when checking free-space requirements.
  4. Save your work. Troubleshooting can require a restart. Close applications and do not interrupt a restart or shutdown while Windows is applying changes.

How do I perform the basic checks?

Many failed updates are caused by a disconnected network, insufficient disk space or a restart that has not completed. Check these items before advanced repairs.

  • Internet connection: Open a few reliable websites, reconnect Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and avoid switching networks while a download is running. If you use a VPN, disconnect it temporarily when testing an update; Microsoft lists VPN use as a possible factor for error 0x800f0922.
  • Free space: Open Settings > System > Storage. Microsoft’s upgrade guidance specifies at least 16 GB free on a 32-bit operating system or 20 GB on a 64-bit operating system. These are minimum figures from Microsoft’s cited page, not a guarantee that every update will install with exactly that amount.
  • Pending restart: In Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, choose Update and restart or Update and shut down when offered. Save work first and let the process finish.
  • Power: Keep a laptop connected to AC power. A shutdown caused by a depleted battery can leave an update incomplete.

How do I run the Windows 10 Update troubleshooter?

The troubleshooter is Microsoft’s recommended first repair. It checks common Windows Update conditions and can correct configuration problems without requiring command-line work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start > Settings > Update & Security.
  2. Select Troubleshoot, then Additional troubleshooters.
  3. Choose Windows Update and select Run the troubleshooter.
  4. Follow each instruction, allow the tool to apply a suggested correction, and restart the PC when prompted.
  5. Return to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.

If the troubleshooter reports that no problem was found, keep the report and the original error code. A “no problem found” result does not prove the update is compatible or that Windows 10 is still entitled to receive it.

Which fix matches my Windows Update error code?

An error code narrows the investigation but does not prove one cause on every computer. Use the code as a routing hint, then confirm the related symptom.

Error code What Microsoft associates it with Practical next action
0x8007000d Corrupted Windows Update files or cache Run the troubleshooter. If it persists, use the advanced cache-clearing procedure below.
0x800705b4 An update took too long or was interrupted Check the connection, restart the PC, then run the troubleshooter and try again.
0x800f0922 Insufficient disk space is one possible cause; VPN use can also matter Free space to the applicable Microsoft minimum, disconnect a VPN for the test, restart and retry.
0xC1900101 An incompatible driver, with network or graphics drivers specifically mentioned Check Device Manager for driver warnings and obtain a compatible driver from the device manufacturer before retrying.
0x80070422 The Windows Update service may be disabled or stopped Check the service status and run the troubleshooter. The service procedure is described below.

How do I fix a download stuck at 0%?

A download that never moves usually deserves basic checks before cache maintenance. Confirm that the network works in another application, disconnect a VPN, verify storage and restart the computer. Then run the troubleshooter and check again.

Do not repeatedly force the power button while Windows is actively installing. If the percentage has not changed for a long period, look for disk or network activity and any on-screen instruction. A restart is appropriate when Windows offers one or after the troubleshooter requests it; an abrupt power loss can leave the update state inconsistent.

How do I fix an installation stuck between 51% and 99%?

Microsoft specifically documents installations that reach 51–99% and do not complete. Allow reasonable time for the process, keep the computer powered, and disconnect unnecessary peripherals that could introduce driver conflicts. If Windows rolls back and displays an error, record that code rather than trying an unrelated repair.

After the rollback, restart normally, run the troubleshooter, and check free space. For 0xC1900101, investigate network and graphics drivers before attempting the installation again. If the same update repeatedly fails while other updates work, search Microsoft’s guidance for that exact code and update type instead of deleting system folders immediately.

How do I clear the Windows Update cache safely?

Cache clearing is an advanced step for a suspected damaged download, such as the condition Microsoft associates with 0x8007000d. It removes temporary update files, not your personal documents, but Windows will need to download the update again. Back up first and use an administrator account.

  1. Press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. In the Services window, locate Windows Update, right-click it and choose Stop. Leave the Services window open.
  3. Open File Explorer and enter C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution in the address bar.
  4. Delete the contents inside that folder. Do not delete unrelated folders elsewhere in C:Windows. If a file is in use, return to Services and confirm that Windows Update is stopped.
  5. Return to Services, right-click Windows Update and choose Start.
  6. Restart the PC, open Windows Update and select Check for updates.

If Windows refuses to stop or start the service, note the message and stop here rather than changing permissions or deleting additional system folders. Those changes can create a separate servicing problem.

How do I check whether the Windows Update service is disabled?

Error 0x80070422 can occur when the update service is stopped or disabled. Press Windows key + R, enter services.msc, and find Windows Update. Open its properties, review the service status and startup setting, and use Start when the service is stopped. Avoid changing other services at random; if the service immediately stops again, keep the exact message for Microsoft support documentation or a technician.

How do I repair system files when Windows Update reports corruption?

For certain system-file errors, Microsoft points to System File Checker. This is a command-line operation and should be used only if you are comfortable opening an elevated prompt.

  1. Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it and select Run as administrator.
  2. At the prompt, type sfc /scannow and press Enter.
  3. Wait for verification to reach 100%. Do not close the window while the scan is running.
  4. Read the result, restart Windows, and run the Windows Update troubleshooter again.

System File Checker is not a universal update repair. If it reports that it could not fix files, preserve the result and use Microsoft’s guidance for the specific error rather than repeating the scan indefinitely.

What should I do about driver-related error 0xC1900101?

Microsoft associates 0xC1900101 with an incompatible driver and specifically calls out network or graphics drivers. Open Device Manager, expand the network-adapter and display-adapter categories, and look for warning icons or a device that changed immediately before the failed update. Obtain the recommended driver from the hardware manufacturer or PC maker, install it, restart and retry the update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not uninstall a working driver without a replacement plan, especially for network hardware. If the computer loses connectivity after a driver change, use the manufacturer’s recovery package or Windows’ driver rollback option in the device’s properties.

How much storage does a Windows 10 upgrade need?

Microsoft’s cited troubleshooting guidance lists 16 GB free for a 32-bit operating system and 20 GB free for a 64-bit operating system for an upgrade. Check the architecture in Settings > System > About and confirm free space in Settings > System > Storage.

Remove or move large personal files only after backing them up, empty the Recycle Bin, and uninstall applications you no longer need. Microsoft also suggests inserting a USB drive when a device has a small hard drive. A 32 GB USB flash drive is a practical category to search for in this narrowly defined low-storage situation, but Microsoft does not endorse that capacity, a brand or a model, and external storage will not fix a network, service or cache failure unrelated to disk space.

Why does Windows say it is up to date when another PC has a newer version?

Microsoft says updates can be staged because readiness and compatibility are evaluated for individual devices. Different hardware, drivers, applications and update channels can therefore produce different offers at the same time. Check the exact Windows version under Settings > System > About, then consult Microsoft’s lifecycle guidance before assuming that a missing offer is a malfunction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For Windows 10 after October 14, 2025, the more fundamental explanation may be end of support rather than a broken update mechanism. Moving to a supported Windows release is the long-term path Microsoft recommends, provided the computer meets that release’s requirements.

When should I stop troubleshooting?

Stop and seek qualified help when the PC cannot boot normally, repeatedly loses power during installation, reports disk errors, or shows a different error after every restart. Keep the code, Windows edition, percentage at failure, recent driver or software changes, and the steps already attempted. This record prevents a technician from repeating risky procedures.

Also stop if a proposed fix asks you to delete folders outside the documented update cache, disable security protections permanently, edit the registry without a recovery plan, or use an unofficial download. Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Windows Update keep retrying the same package?

A failed package can remain in the local update queue after an interrupted download or restart. Record the associated code, complete the troubleshooter and, only when the symptom points to cache corruption, clear the SoftwareDistribution contents so Windows can download a fresh copy.

Will clearing SoftwareDistribution delete my photos or saved games?

The procedure targets temporary Windows Update files inside that cache directory, not personal folders. The update package will need to download again, so keep a backup and do not delete unrelated Windows directories.

Can I force a Windows 10 update from an unofficial website?

Avoid unofficial installers and download mirrors because they can introduce altered files or incompatible packages. Use Microsoft’s documented Windows Update path and its code-specific guidance, especially now that Windows 10 is outside normal support.

Is a USB drive required when storage is low?

No. Microsoft presents removable storage as an option for devices with a small internal drive, not as a universal requirement. It only addresses the space constraint and will not correct a stopped service, VPN conflict, damaged cache or incompatible driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I keep trying if the same update fails after every repair?

Repeated identical failures are a signal to preserve the exact code and stop escalating changes blindly. Check whether the device is eligible for a supported operating system, then use Microsoft’s guidance for that code or consult a qualified technician with your troubleshooting record.
