If Windows 10 stops with PROCESS1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED or the blue-screen code 0x0000006B, startup failed while Windows was initializing its operating-system components. Microsoft’s definition is direct: “The PROCESS1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED bug check has a value of 0x0000006B.” The documented cause classes include a failing disk or cable, incompatible storage devices on one cable chain, an unavailable drive, a missing boot-partition file, or a driver disabled in the Drivers tab. Protect important data first, then work through repairs in order: DISM and SFC if Windows still starts, offline SFC and CHKDSK in the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) if it does not, followed by Startup Repair, System Restore and physical connection checks.
What does PROCESS1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED (0x0000006B) mean?
This stop code means Windows could not complete the earliest phase of boot. It is not an application crash; the operating system failed before the normal desktop could load. The failure can be caused by damaged system files, an inaccessible boot volume, storage hardware trouble, or a startup driver that is missing or disabled.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchMicrosoft groups the principal causes around the disk subsystem. A bad drive, loose or incorrect cable, mixed ATA devices on one cable chain, or a drive that has become unavailable can all prevent initialization. Microsoft also identifies a missing file in the boot partition and a driver accidentally disabled through the Drivers tab as possible causes. The code alone does not identify which of these occurred, so the safest approach is to protect data and test the least-destructive repairs first.
What should I do before attempting a repair?
Stop and protect the data if the computer is making clicking, grinding or repeated spin-up sounds, if the drive disappears from firmware setup, or if you have seen repeated read/write errors. Every additional boot or disk-repair pass can place more stress on a failing device.

- Power the PC down if the disk is behaving abnormally rather than repeatedly forcing restarts.
- Connect the drive to another computer, or use a trusted imaging or backup environment, to copy irreplaceable files before repairs.
- If the drive is encrypted, make sure you have the BitLocker recovery key before moving it to another system or changing boot settings.
- Record the exact stop code, recent updates, driver installations and hardware changes. That timeline helps distinguish a software change from a physical failure.
Microsoft drive-repair guidance recommends backing up the affected drive before repair. If you cannot make a backup because the disk is not detected consistently, treat that as a hardware warning and arrange professional data recovery instead of repeatedly running CHKDSK.
Can Windows 10 still start far enough to open a command prompt?
Yes. If you can reach the desktop, or can sign in after one successful boot, run Microsoft’s component-repair sequence in an elevated Command Prompt. DISM repairs the component store that SFC uses, so run DISM first and SFC second.

- Open Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click it and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt. - Enter
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand press Enter. - Wait for DISM to reach completion. It can appear to pause at one percentage for several minutes; do not close the window while it is working.
- When DISM reports completion, run
sfc /scannow. - Restart Windows and check whether the blue screen returns.
DISM’s /Online switch targets the running Windows installation. SFC then checks protected operating-system files and replaces damaged copies when a valid copy is available. If SFC says it found corruption it could not repair, restart once and run the command again; preserve the exact message for later troubleshooting rather than assuming the problem is solved.
How do I repair Windows when it will not boot?
Use Windows installation media to enter WinRE. You need a bootable Windows 10 DVD or USB and, on some systems, the firmware boot-menu key (often shown briefly during power-on). Booting from the media does not reinstall Windows unless you choose an installation option; select the recovery tools instead.
Open WinRE Command Prompt and identify the Windows volume
- Insert the installation USB or DVD and boot from it.
- At the setup screen, select the language and keyboard layout, choose Next, then select Repair your computer.
- Choose Troubleshoot, then Advanced options, then Command Prompt.
- At the prompt, use
diskpart, thenlist volume, to see the volumes. The Windows partition may not beC:in WinRE. Identify it by its size and by looking for aWindowsdirectory, then typeexitto leave DiskPart.
Substitute the correct letter in every command below. A wrong letter can repair the recovery environment or a data volume instead of the installed operating system.

Run offline System File Checker
For a Windows installation on volume C, enter:
SFC /Scannow /OffBootDir=C: /OffWinDir=C:Windows
If WinRE assigned another letter, replace both occurrences accordingly, such as D: and D:Windows. The offline switches tell SFC to work on the unbooted installation rather than on the temporary recovery environment. Allow the scan to finish, note its final message, and restart only after the command exits.
Check the disk with CHKDSK when corruption is suspected
From the same prompt, run:
chkdsk C: /f /r
Replace C: with the Windows volume you identified. The /f option fixes logical file-system errors; /r searches for bad sectors and attempts to recover readable information. A large or damaged disk can take hours, and the scan can increase stress on hardware that is already failing. Do not interrupt it casually, but stop escalating disk operations if the drive disappears, produces unusual noises or reports persistent unreadable sectors.
Should I try Startup Repair or System Restore?
Use these graphical WinRE options after protecting data and running the appropriate file checks. Startup Repair is aimed at boot files and startup configuration. System Restore is the safer choice when a recent driver, update or registry change preceded the blue screen and a restore point exists.
Startup Repair
- Boot to the Windows installation media and open Repair your computer > Troubleshoot > Advanced options.
- Select Startup Repair and choose the Windows 10 installation if prompted.
- Let the automatic diagnostic complete, then restart without the USB or DVD.
Startup Repair may run more than once and can report that it could not repair the PC. That result does not prove the disk is healthy; it only means the automated startup checks did not correct the condition they found.
System Restore
- In the same Advanced options menu, select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the first 0x0000006B appearance, if one is available.
- Review the affected programs and confirm the restore. Personal documents are not normally removed, but applications, drivers and system settings installed after the restore point can be rolled back.
Microsoft notes that Windows 10 version 1803 and later no longer automatically back up registry hives in the RegBack folder. Do not assume that copying files from RegBack will restore a usable registry. When registry-hive corruption is suspected, System Restore is Microsoft’s recommended route if a valid restore point exists.

Could a cable or storage connection be causing the blue screen?
Yes. A loose SATA data cable, a failing power lead, a damaged connector or an incorrectly configured storage chain can make the boot drive unavailable during initialization. Microsoft identifies disks and cables as possible causes, and Microsoft-hosted troubleshooting guidance also recommends inspecting connections.
Desktop checks
- Shut down, unplug the system and discharge residual power according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Reseat the SATA data cable at both the motherboard and drive ends, then reseat the drive’s power connector.
- If possible, test with a known-good cable and a different motherboard SATA port.
- For systems with multiple legacy ATA devices on one cable, verify that device jumpers and master/slave configuration match the hardware documentation; mixed or incorrect configurations can prevent detection.
- Enter UEFI/BIOS setup and confirm that the expected drive is detected consistently. Do not change storage mode between AHCI, RAID and legacy modes without understanding the original configuration.
Laptop and external-drive cautions
Laptop drive access may require model-specific disassembly, and opening a sealed system can affect warranty coverage. An external USB enclosure can help copy data, but it is not a substitute for a proper hardware diagnosis. If the internal drive is intermittently visible, copy data before experimenting with firmware or partition changes.
Is deleting Bootcat.cache a valid fix?
Some 0x0000006B cases have been associated by TheWindowsClub with a corrupted or changed-size Bootcat.cache file in %SystemRoot%System32CodeIntegrity. Its workaround is to boot from Windows installation media, locate the Windows volume, delete that file and restart. This is secondary-source advice, not a guaranteed Microsoft fix.
Prefer Startup Repair, System Restore, offline SFC and CHKDSK first. If you try the workaround, make a backup or disk image before deleting anything, confirm the drive letter in WinRE, and type the path carefully. Deleting a file from the wrong volume can damage another installation or recovery environment. If the file is absent, locked or immediately recreated with the same failure, stop repeating the deletion and return to storage and system-file diagnostics.

Which recovery path should I choose?
The right path depends on whether Windows boots, whether the operation changes files, and whether the evidence comes from Microsoft’s primary guidance or a secondary workaround.

| Offline SFC | No | Repairs protected files in the selected Windows installation | Low if the correct volume is used | Required for WinRE access | Microsoft guidance |
| CHKDSK /f /r | No or unstable | Fixes file-system errors and scans sectors | Higher on a failing disk; back up first | Usually required when Windows cannot start | Microsoft guidance |
| Startup Repair | No | Attempts automated boot-file and startup repairs | Usually low | Required if the built-in recovery partition is unavailable | Microsoft WinRE tool |
| System Restore | No or unstable | Rolls system files, drivers and settings back to a restore point | Personal files normally remain, but later software changes are removed | WinRE access may be required | Microsoft recommendation for registry-state problems |
| Bootcat.cache deletion | No | Deletes one startup cache file | Back up first; wrong-volume deletion is dangerous | Required | Secondary-source workaround |
When should I stop troubleshooting and get professional help?
Escalate to a qualified technician or data-recovery provider when CHKDSK reports persistent errors, the disk is missing intermittently in firmware, the computer repeatedly blue-screens after system-file repair, or important data is not backed up. A drive that cannot stay detected is a hardware problem until proven otherwise; reinstalling Windows will not make an unreliable device safe.
- Preserve the original drive state when the data is valuable. Avoid initializing, formatting or repartitioning it.
- Tell the technician that the stop code is 0x0000006B and provide CHKDSK, SFC and DISM results.
- List any recent storage, firmware, driver or Windows-update changes.
- If the disk is encrypted, provide the recovery key through a secure channel rather than placing it in a public support post.
Do not assume a successful single boot means the problem is gone. A marginal cable or disk can work intermittently, and repeated startup failures after a temporary recovery are a reason to complete a backup and investigate the hardware.
As an optional shortcut after the built-in Microsoft steps, Outbyte PC Repair can check more than 100 common Windows issues, including damaged system elements and shared DLL problems, and offers cleanup, settings adjustments and an app-crash log on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary and no tool repairs every crash. A category-based free trial lasts at least two days before a subscription, so use it only after protecting your data.

Will reinstalling Windows always solve 0x0000006B?
No. Reinstallation can replace software and boot files, but it cannot repair a failing disk, bad cable or unstable storage controller. If the drive is not detected reliably or CHKDSK reports continuing errors, diagnose or replace the hardware before considering a clean installation.
Can I run these commands from any recovery USB?
The command prompt must be able to see the Windows partition and its file system. A Windows 10 installation or recovery environment is preferable because it supplies the matching WinRE tools; always verify the volume letter with list volume rather than assuming it is C.
What if SFC says it repaired files but the blue screen returns?
That result indicates file corruption was found, not that the underlying cause is resolved. Check storage detection and cables, review recent driver or update changes, and use System Restore when an appropriate restore point exists.
