Windows 10 does not have one universal “repair command.” The right command depends on the damaged layer: DISM repairs the Windows image and component store, SFC repairs protected system files, and CHKDSK repairs logical or physical errors on a disk volume. For corrupted Windows files, Microsoft’s supported order is to run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth first and then sfc /scannow. Use CHKDSK instead when the evidence points to file-system or disk errors.
This guide explains what each command does, when to use it, the exact elevated Command Prompt steps, how to provide DISM with matching installation media when Windows Update cannot, and how to interpret incomplete repairs without risking unnecessary changes.

Which Windows 10 repair command should you use?
Choose the command by the fault layer rather than by the symptom alone. A crash, update failure or missing system component can involve more than one layer, so the normal sequence starts with DISM and SFC; CHKDSK is added only when a volume problem is indicated.

Microsoft describes CHKDSK as checking “the file system and file system metadata of a volume for logical and physical errors.” That is a different job from repairing the Windows component store or protected operating-system files.

What should you do before running a repair command?
- Save work and back up important files. The commands target Windows components or disk structures, not your documents, but a backup protects you if an existing hardware or file-system problem worsens.
- Install pending Windows updates when Windows is usable, then restart. A restart clears pending servicing operations and gives DISM and SFC a clean session.
- Connect to the internet if possible. DISM works best when it can obtain missing or corrupted files from Microsoft Update servers. If that is unavailable, prepare matching Windows installation media for a source path.
- Use an elevated Command Prompt. Standard Command Prompt windows usually cannot make the required system changes.
How do you open an elevated Command Prompt in Windows 10?
- Open the Start menu and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt. The title bar should identify an administrator session.
- Keep this window open until each command reaches a final result. Closing it during a repair can leave the operation incomplete.
How do you run DISM to repair the Windows image?
Run DISM first when Windows components or the component store may be corrupted. In the administrator Command Prompt, enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth- Press Enter and let the scan and repair proceed. Microsoft notes that the operation may take several minutes.
- Leave the computer connected to Microsoft Update servers when possible so DISM can obtain replacement files.
- Wait for a completion message. A successful operation should report that the operation completed successfully.
- Only after that successful completion should you run
sfc /scannow.
/Online tells DISM to service the Windows installation currently running. /Cleanup-image selects component-store servicing, and /Restorehealth checks for corruption and repairs it when a usable source is available.

Use the diagnostic switches when you want to inspect the image before changing it:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth/ScanHealth performs a corruption scan. /CheckHealth performs a health check that reports whether corruption has been detected or is already flagged. If the image is repairable, /RestoreHealth is the switch that performs the repair.
Why does DISM need a source, and how do you provide one?
DISM normally obtains replacement components through Windows Update. If it reports that source files could not be found, point it to a working Windows installation or official installation files that match the operating-system version being repaired.
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess- Replace
C:RepairSourceWindowswith the actual path containing the Windows source files. The path can be on a local drive, a USB device, a DVD, or a network location. - Use installation media for the same Windows operating-system version as the installed system. A source from a different version may not contain compatible components.
- Run the command from the elevated window and wait for the final result.
- Use
/LimitAccesswhen Windows Update is unavailable or when you want DISM to use only the specified source. This switch prevents Windows Update from being used as a source or backup source.
The USB device itself does not repair Windows. It only stores or provides access to official, matching installation media that DISM can read.

How do you run SFC after DISM?
Once DISM reports successful completion, run the System File Checker:
sfc /scannow- Type the command exactly, including the space between
sfcand/scannow. - Press Enter and wait until the display says Verification 100% complete.
- Read the final result before closing the administrator window.
- Restart Windows if the repair result or your original symptom indicates that repaired files need to be reloaded.
SFC scans protected system files and replaces incorrect versions when a known-good copy is available. Running it before DISM can leave SFC without a healthy component source, which is why Microsoft Support instructs users to run DISM first.
What do the SFC result messages mean?
- No integrity violations: SFC did not find a problem in the protected files it checked.
- Corrupt files found and repaired: SFC replaced the files it could repair. Restart and test the original problem.
- Corrupt files found but some could not be repaired: inspect the detailed SFC information and the
Sfcdetails.txtoutput. Microsoft notes that a known-good copy or a Windows reinstall may be necessary for files that remain unrepaired. - Could not perform the requested operation: rerun the command from an administrator window and consider Safe Mode or an offline scan if Windows cannot keep the files available.
What SFC commands are useful for a narrower check?
The SFC command reference includes alternatives when a full scan is unnecessary or Windows is offline:
sfc /verifyonlychecks protected files without attempting repairs.sfc /scanfile=<file>scans one specified file and attempts repair.sfc /verifyfile=<file>verifies one specified file without repairing it.sfc /offbootdir=<offline-boot-directory> /offwindir=<offline-windows-directory> /scannowscans an offline Windows installation.
Use the offline switches only when you know the drive letters and directory paths assigned in the recovery environment; those letters can differ from the letters shown during normal Windows startup.
When should you run CHKDSK instead?
Use CHKDSK when the symptom or diagnostic message points to a disk or file-system problem: damaged volume metadata, file-system errors, or suspected bad sectors. It is not a substitute for DISM or SFC when the problem is a corrupted Windows image or protected system file.
Fix logical file-system errors
chkdsk C: /fThe /f switch tells CHKDSK to fix logical file-system errors on drive C:. Replace the drive letter when the affected volume is different.

Check for bad sectors and recover readable information
chkdsk C: /rThe /r switch locates bad sectors and attempts to recover readable information; it includes the functions of /f. Because a running system normally has drive C: open, Windows may ask to schedule the check for the next restart. Confirm the schedule, restart, and allow the check to finish.
CHKDSK requires administrator rights and is intended for local disks. Do not force a shutdown while it is repairing a volume unless the computer is completely unresponsive and you have exhausted safer recovery options.

What is the recommended Windows 10 repair sequence?
- Update Windows if possible and restart.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt.
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth. - After DISM reports successful completion, run
sfc /scannow. - If the symptom indicates disk or file-system corruption, run
chkdsk C: /f; use/rwhen bad-sector detection and recovery are also required. - If DISM reports a missing source, repeat it with
/Sourcepointing to matching Windows media and add/LimitAccesswhen Windows Update cannot be used. - Restart and test the original symptom. If repairs remain incomplete, review the servicing and SFC logs.
Where can you find DISM and SFC details?
Windows records servicing information in %SYSTEMROOT%LogsCBSCBS.log. SFC also provides the Sfcdetails.txt output referenced by Microsoft Support. Search those records for the date and time of your command, the file names reported as corrupt, and messages indicating whether a replacement was found.
Logs are most useful when a command completes with an incomplete-repair message. They can show which component or protected file still needs a known-good copy, a matching source, or a more substantial recovery such as reinstalling Windows.
How do you troubleshoot common command failures?
“Access is denied” or the command will not start
Close the window, reopen Command Prompt with Run as administrator, and retry. Administrative rights are required for DISM, SFC repairs and CHKDSK fixes.
DISM says source files could not be found
Confirm that the source path is valid and contains matching Windows installation files. Re-run DISM with /Source; use /LimitAccess if Windows Update is unavailable, and do not assume that media from another operating-system version is compatible.

SFC cannot repair every file
Let the scan reach 100 percent, then inspect the detailed SFC information and Sfcdetails.txt. A known-good copy or reinstall may be required for files that remain unrepaired; repeatedly running the same command does not guarantee a different result.
CHKDSK wants to run after restart
That is expected when the system volume is in use. Save work, accept the schedule, restart, and allow the volume check to complete before interrupting startup.
The original crash or error continues
A clean DISM or SFC result rules out some Windows-file problems but does not prove that an application, driver, update, storage device or hardware issue is healthy. Use the command results together with the application’s own error message and Windows logs to choose the next diagnostic step.

DISM, SFC and CHKDSK are built-in Microsoft maintenance tools, but each changes a different part of the system. DISM and SFC replace or restore Windows components when possible; CHKDSK modifies file-system metadata and can mark bad sectors. Back up important data, use an elevated window, provide only matching repair media, and do not interrupt an active repair without a compelling reason.
None of these commands promises a guaranteed fix or a particular completion time. Microsoft’s guidance describes qualitative timing such as “may take several minutes,” and results depend on the condition of the installation, available source files and storage hardware.

What should you do if Windows 10 will not boot?
Start Windows Recovery or another offline environment and identify the drive letters assigned to the boot and Windows partitions. Then use SFC’s offline switches with the correct /offbootdir and /offwindir paths. The exact letters and paths must match that recovery session; do not copy the normal-session letters blindly.

If the offline environment exposes a damaged volume, run CHKDSK against that volume with /f, adding /r only when bad-sector detection is needed. For an offline image repair, use DISM’s image-servicing syntax and a matching source; the online command shown earlier targets the Windows installation currently running.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I run DISM and SFC from PowerShell instead of Command Prompt?
Yes. PowerShell can launch the same executables, but open PowerShell with administrator rights and enter the commands exactly as shown. The repair behavior comes from DISM.exe and sfc.exe, not from the shell’s appearance.
Will DISM, SFC or CHKDSK delete my personal files?
These commands are designed to service Windows components, protected files or a volume’s file system rather than remove documents, photos or game saves. A backup is still prudent because an existing storage failure can worsen independently of the command you run.
How long should I wait before deciding a repair command is stuck?
There is no reliable universal duration. Microsoft describes DISM as potentially taking several minutes, while CHKDSK with bad-sector recovery can take substantially longer; wait for disk activity and a final message instead of closing the window based only on elapsed time.
Do I need a Windows 10 USB drive for every repair?
No. DISM normally obtains repair files through Windows Update, so installation media is needed only when the normal source is unavailable or the command reports missing source files. Any media used as a source must match the installed operating-system version.
