If Windows 10 shows SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED with stop code 0x0000007E, the code identifies a kernel crash but not the exact faulty component. First verify the characters on the blue screen: 0X007007E is not Microsoft’s documented format and may be a transcription error for 0x0000007E. Photograph the complete message and any named .sys file, undo the latest hardware or software change, then use Safe Mode, Device Manager, Event Viewer and, if necessary, a memory dump to isolate the driver, firmware, hardware or software that triggered the exception. The procedure below is for Windows 10 and starts with steps that do not erase personal files.

Is 0X007007E the same as Windows stop code 0x0000007E?

Microsoft documents the bug check as 0x0000007E, named SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED. The documented meaning is that a system thread generated an exception that its error handler did not catch. If your screen really says 0X007007E, do not assume it is the same error: check every digit, the number of zeros and any text naming a driver before following a 0x7E workflow.

A 0x7E stop is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The bug check carries four parameters: the unhandled exception code, the address where the exception occurred, the address of the exception record and the address of the processor context record. Microsoft lists examples such as 0xC0000005 for an access violation, 0x80000002 for datatype misalignment and 0x80000003 for a breakpoint or assertion. Those values can narrow the investigation, but a named module, event log entry or dump analysis is still needed to identify what should be repaired.

Write down the complete stop screen, including a driver filename such as example.sys, before restarting. A filename is a lead rather than proof; the driver may have been given bad data by firmware, memory or another component.

What usually causes SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED?

Microsoft’s aggregate analysis attributes most stop errors to code outside Windows itself, although the page does not publish a study year. The figures are useful for prioritizing checks, not for proving the cause of an individual crash.

Category Share in Microsoft’s analysis What it means for troubleshooting
Third-party driver code 70% Check recently changed graphics, storage, network, audio, chipset and other vendor drivers first.
Hardware issues 10% Run the manufacturer’s diagnostics and memory tests, and check compatibility and firmware.
Microsoft code 5% Install applicable Windows updates and preserve crash evidence before changing more settings.
Unknown because memory was too corrupted to analyze 15% A clean dump may require correcting the underlying hardware or driver instability first.

Timing is often the fastest clue. A crash immediately after a driver update points toward rollback; a crash after adding a device points toward removal and compatibility checks; a crash only during a particular workload points toward the device or software used by that workload. A system that is stable in Safe Mode but not during normal startup is also a strong indication that a normal-startup driver or service is involved, although it does not by itself identify which one.

What should I do before changing anything?

  1. Record the evidence. Photograph the blue screen or transcribe the exact stop code, exception parameters and any named module. Note what the computer was doing, whether the restart was automatic and what changed during the previous day.
  2. Shut down completely. If a new USB device, expansion card, dock, storage device or other hardware was installed, power off and disconnect it. Reconnect only essential devices for the next boot.
  3. Undo the newest software change. If the crash began after a driver, Windows update, service or application change, roll back or uninstall that change when Windows provides an option. Do not install several replacement drivers at once; changing one variable keeps the evidence useful.
  4. Protect important work. If Windows remains usable long enough, copy irreplaceable files to another location before deeper recovery work. Avoid repeated forced shutdowns except when the system is completely unresponsive.

Microsoft notes that an unexpected restart can be caused by a hardware device, its driver or software. Treat the most recent change as a lead, not a certainty: a delayed failure can expose an older compatibility or memory problem.

How do I start Windows 10 in Safe Mode when 0x7E prevents normal booting?

Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers and services, making it an isolation step rather than a permanent fix. If Windows starts normally, you can reach recovery from Settings; if it loops or crashes, Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) should appear after failed starts, or you can boot from Windows installation or recovery media.

  1. Enter WinRE and select Troubleshoot.
  2. Choose Advanced options, then Startup Settings, and select Restart.
  3. When the numbered menu appears, press 4 or F4 for Safe Mode. Press 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking only when you need network access for a specific diagnostic task.
  4. Sign in and test whether the blue screen returns. If Safe Mode is stable, remove or roll back the most recently changed driver or software before attempting a normal restart.

Some applications cannot be removed while Safe Mode is running. In that case, use Device Manager for the driver, return to normal startup long enough to use the application’s uninstaller, or use a recovery option instead of repeatedly forcing the uninstall.

How do I use Device Manager to find a bad driver?

Device Manager is the first targeted check after Safe Mode. A warning icon, a device that disappeared, or a driver date that matches the start of the crashes can connect the stop code to a physical component.

  1. Open Start, type Device Manager, and open it.
  2. Expand categories related to the failure, such as Display adapters, Network adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, Storage controllers, Bluetooth and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  3. Look for a yellow warning icon, an unknown device or a device that appeared immediately before the crashes. Open its Properties and read the General and Driver tabs.
  4. Use Update Driver when a newer package is available from the hardware vendor. If the problem began after an update, choose Roll Back Driver when that button is available.
  5. If updating does not help, choose Disable device to test whether normal startup becomes stable. If the result implicates the device, uninstall its driver and restart, then install a known-compatible package from the vendor.

Prefer the computer or component manufacturer’s official driver and firmware packages. Avoid installing a generic package that does not match the exact model, Windows edition or system architecture. A driver that appears current can still be corrupted, so a clean reinstall or rollback is sometimes more informative than another update.

How do I check Event Viewer for the crash?

Event Viewer can show which device or driver reported an error shortly before the stop. It may not name the root cause, especially when memory corruption damaged the evidence, but its timestamps help distinguish a driver change from a hardware failure.

  1. Press Windows key + X and open Event Viewer.
  2. In the left pane, open Windows Logs and select System.
  3. Use Filter Current Log or sort by date and time around the blue screen. Review errors and critical events immediately before the restart.
  4. Open an event to read the provider, event ID, device name and message. Compare its timestamp with the stop screen and with any driver or hardware change.

Do not treat every warning in the log as causal. The useful entry is the one that is repeatable, concerns the same component and occurs immediately before the crash.

Which Windows and hardware checks can prevent another 0x7E crash?

Install applicable Windows updates

Use Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and install applicable updates, then restart when prompted. If the crash began directly after an update, record its name and use recovery or uninstall options rather than repeatedly reinstalling the same update.

Update BIOS and device firmware carefully

Check the system or motherboard manufacturer’s support page for the exact model. Read its compatibility notes, connect reliable power and follow the vendor’s flashing procedure. An incorrect BIOS image or interrupted firmware update can create a separate boot failure, so do not guess at a package intended for another revision.

Run vendor hardware and memory diagnostics

Use the manufacturer’s built-in or downloadable diagnostics for memory, storage, graphics and other components. Test newly installed hardware for compatibility and reseat or remove it only according to the vendor’s instructions. If diagnostics report an error, preserve the report for the manufacturer or repair technician instead of masking it with more driver changes.

Keep working space on the system drive

Microsoft suggests keeping approximately 10–15% of the system disk free. Windows and applications need working space for swap files, updates, logs and crash dumps. Check Settings > System > Storage, remove only files you recognize as safe to delete, and do not assume that deleting arbitrary system folders will solve a driver fault.

Check for malware when symptoms warrant it

Run Microsoft Defender or another reputable malware scanner when there are unexplained changes, suspicious software or other signs of compromise. A malware scan complements driver and hardware diagnosis; a clean result does not rule out a faulty driver or component.

When should I use System Restore or another recovery option?

Use recovery when the crash clearly follows a recent change and ordinary rollback is unavailable or Windows cannot remain stable. In WinRE, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options, then select System Restore if a restore point predates the failure. You can also use another recovery option offered for your installation, following its prompts and reviewing what it will remove before confirming.

System Restore is most useful when the change was a driver, service or application. It does not repair a failing memory module or incompatible hardware, so a recurring crash after restoration still requires diagnostics and dump analysis. Keep the original stop-code photograph and event details even if recovery temporarily restores booting.

How do I collect and read a crash dump?

Dump analysis is an escalation path for repeated crashes or cases where Device Manager and Event Viewer do not identify a component. Advanced users can configure dumps in Advanced system settings > Startup and Recovery. Enable an automatic memory dump or another dump type appropriate to the available disk space, and keep the setting active until the next failure.

  • Small dumps are stored in %SystemRoot%Minidump.
  • Kernel, complete and automatic dumps use %SystemRoot%MEMORY.DMP by default.

Install WinDbg from Microsoft’s debugging tools, open the dump file and run !analyze. Examine the reported bug check, probable module, call stack and timestamps, then compare the result with your Device Manager and Event Viewer evidence. A module named in a dump is not automatically guilty: verify it against the exact driver version and hardware, because memory corruption can make a secondary module appear in the report.

If no usable dump is produced, check that the system drive has enough free space, that dump settings point to a writable location and that the computer is not losing power before Windows can save the file. The 15% unknown category in Microsoft’s analysis reflects how severe memory corruption can obscure evidence.

How can I decide whether the driver, hardware or software is the likely cause?

When two explanations remain, compare them using the same evidence rather than changing several parts at once.

Comparison axis Evidence favoring a driver or software change Evidence favoring hardware or firmware
Timing Crash starts immediately after a driver, service or application update. Crash starts after installing a device, changing firmware or altering hardware.
Reproducibility Failure follows one application or workload and disappears after rollback. Failure occurs during different workloads, memory tests or every boot.
Logs and dumps Repeated entries name the same driver or function. Diagnostics report memory, storage, thermal or device errors, or dumps are consistently corrupted.
Safe Mode Safe Mode is stable while normal startup crashes. Safe Mode also crashes, or the device fails before optional drivers load.
Vendor confirmation A corrected driver or application release resolves the issue. The vendor identifies an incompatible BIOS, firmware revision or defective component.

Use one controlled change, restart and test the same workload. Record the result and restore the previous state if the change makes the system less stable. This creates a short, defensible history for a hardware vendor or technician.

Should I disable BIOS memory caching or shadowing?

Microsoft’s 0x7E guidance lists disabling BIOS memory caching or shadowing as a possible diagnostic technique. BIOS menus and labels differ by manufacturer, and an incorrect setting can affect performance or boot behavior. Treat this as a vendor- or technician-directed test: document the original value, change only the setting you were instructed to change, and restore it after the test if it does not affect the crash.

What if Windows still restarts after every fix?

Stop adding unrelated drivers and preserve the evidence you have collected. Re-enter WinRE, try System Restore or another recovery option that returns the system to a known-good state, and provide the stop-screen photograph, Event Viewer entries, dump files, hardware model and diagnostic results to the device or software vendor. If the crash occurs even in Safe Mode or diagnostics, prioritize hardware and firmware evaluation over further application changes.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for and address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, while also offering settings adjustments, temporary-file cleanup, privacy tools, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 with a free trial by category for at least two days before a paid subscription; it complements antivirus software, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there no driver filename on my blue screen?

Windows does not always identify a module on the visible stop screen, especially when memory is heavily corrupted. In that case, rely on the exact stop parameters, the System log and a dump rather than assuming the absence of a filename clears every driver.

Why does the computer reboot before I can read the message?

Automatic restart can hide the evidence. In WinRE, open Advanced options > Startup Settings and use the option that prevents automatic restart after failure, then photograph the next stop screen before making changes.

Is Safe Mode with Networking necessary?

No. Plain Safe Mode is safer for isolating a driver because it loads fewer components. Choose Safe Mode with Networking only when a specific diagnostic or vendor download requires network access, and disconnect again while testing if network software appears related to the crash.

What should I give a repair technician if dump analysis is inconclusive?

Provide the exact code and parameters, the date and workload for each crash, the list of recent hardware or software changes, Event Viewer exports, dump files and every vendor diagnostic report. That timeline lets the technician compare reproducibility and vendor confirmation instead of starting with a generic driver replacement.
