If Windows 10 will not complete an update, use a staged repair: restart, check power, internet, storage, date and time, and external hardware; run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter; then reset the update cache and repair Windows system files if necessary. A percentage that appears frozen is not, by itself, proof that the computer has failed, because download and installation time varies with connection speed, network settings and update size. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so a repairable update malfunction must be distinguished from a device that is no longer eligible for ordinary free Windows 10 servicing.
What should I check before trying a repair?
Start with low-risk checks. They address the most common causes without changing Windows files.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Back up personal files. Copy important documents, saved games, photos and other irreplaceable data to a separate drive or trusted cloud storage before clearing caches or running repair commands.
- Connect power. Plug in a laptop and leave it connected throughout downloading and installation. A shutdown during an update can leave the installation incomplete.
- Confirm a stable connection. Use reliable Wi-Fi or Ethernet. If the connection drops, reconnect before checking for updates again. Avoid switching networks during installation.
- Use an administrator account when prompted. The troubleshooter may run with a standard account, but service changes and command-line repairs require elevation.
- Remove nonessential hardware. Shut down and disconnect USB drives, docks, printers, card readers and other accessories. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display and network connection needed to operate the PC.
- Check free space. Microsoft lists at least 16 GB for a 32-bit upgrade and 20 GB for a 64-bit upgrade. Open File Explorer, select This PC, and check the free space on the Windows drive. Delete or move files until the requirement is met; a USB drive can provide optional extra storage, but it is not itself a repair.
- Correct the clock. Open Start > Settings > Time & Language > Date & time, turn on automatic time and time-zone settings, and select Sync now if available. An incorrect clock can prevent update services from communicating correctly.
- Restart once. Choose Start > Power > Restart, wait for Windows to load completely, and then check Windows Update again. A restart clears transient service and connection states.
How do I run the Windows Update troubleshooter?
The troubleshooter is Microsoft’s first recommended intervention and does not require deleting update files.
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update, then choose Run the troubleshooter (the button may be labeled simply Run on some Windows 10 builds).
- Allow the scan to finish. Apply any proposed correction and note any message it reports.
- Restart the PC when the tool requests it.
- Return to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
If the troubleshooter reports that it could not identify a problem, continue with the symptom-specific checks below. Running it again after a restart is reasonable when the first attempt was interrupted.

Why is Windows Update stuck at 0% or 100%?
At either endpoint, restart first, verify the network and storage checks above, and run the troubleshooter. The displayed percentage can remain unchanged while Windows verifies files or waits for another installation phase, so do not assume that a fixed percentage represents a specific number of minutes.
Stuck at 0%
Zero percent usually indicates that downloading or initial preparation has not advanced. Confirm that the PC is online, that Windows is not in Airplane mode, and that the Windows drive has the required free space. If the machine is connected through a metered or unreliable network, use a stable connection and then select Check for updates again after restarting.
Stuck at 100%
One hundred percent can mean that the payload is complete but Windows still needs to finalize, restart or verify the installation. Give the system time to finish its current screen, but if it remains unchanged after a normal restart, run the troubleshooter and check the update again. Do not repeatedly force power-off while an installation screen is actively progressing.
What if installation stops between 51% and 99%?
Microsoft notes that download and installation time depends on connection speed, network settings and update size; there is no reliable universal waiting time. If the percentage remains unchanged, check for updates again or rerun the Windows Update troubleshooter.
- Record the percentage and any message shown on screen.
- Verify that power and network connectivity have not changed.
- Restart normally if Windows offers a restart or if the screen has clearly stopped responding.
- Run the troubleshooter from Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Retry from Windows Update > Check for updates.
A repeated stop at the same stage after these checks points toward cache corruption, a disabled service, insufficient storage, damaged system files or interference from software and drivers rather than a simple slow download.
What do common Windows Update error codes mean?
Error codes are clues, not diagnoses. Use the matching first actions, then move to cache and system-file repairs if the code returns.

How do I clear the Windows Update cache safely?
Corrupt files in the update cache can make Windows repeatedly download or install the same update. Clearing the cache removes downloaded update data so Windows can obtain a fresh copy; it does not erase your personal documents, but you should still back up first.
- Press Windows key + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - In the Services window, find Windows Update.
- Right-click it and choose Stop. If Windows asks for administrator approval, accept it.
- Open File Explorer and enter
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionin the address bar. - Delete the contents of that folder. Do not delete unrelated folders elsewhere in
C:Windows. If a file is in use, confirm that the Windows Update service is stopped and restart the PC before trying again. - Return to
services.msc, right-click Windows Update, and choose Start. - Restart Windows and select Check for updates.
The first retry can take longer because update files must be downloaded again. If the service will not start or the cache cannot be cleared, use the elevated command procedure next.
How do I reset Windows Update components from Command Prompt?
Microsoft classifies this procedure as advanced. It requires an administrator Command Prompt and changes the names of update folders so Windows can create clean ones. Renaming is reversible, but do not skip the backup step.
- Open Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click the result and choose Run as administrator. - Run each command in order:
net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
ren %systemroot%softwaredistribution softwaredistribution.bak
ren %systemroot%system32catroot2 catroot2.bak
net start bits
net start wuauserv
- Close Command Prompt and restart the PC.
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
The bits command stops Background Intelligent Transfer Service, while wuauserv stops Windows Update. The two ren commands preserve the old folders under new names instead of permanently deleting them. If a command reports that a service is not running, continue only after checking that the folder-renaming commands completed and that the services can be started again.
How do I repair damaged Windows files?
Use these commands when error codes indicate missing or corrupt files, when the cache reset does not help, or when Windows reports disk or component damage. Run them in an elevated Command Prompt and follow the order shown.
Check the Windows drive
Run:
chkdsk /f C:
Windows may say the drive is in use and offer to schedule the check for the next restart. Accept that option, restart, and allow the scan to finish. Keep the PC connected to power; interrupting a disk check can create additional problems.

Repair the component store with DISM
After Windows starts again, open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
DISM can take time and may appear to pause at a percentage. Let it complete unless the computer is genuinely unresponsive. The command repairs the Windows component store that system-file checking relies on.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Validate protected files with SFC
When DISM finishes, run:
sfc /scannow
Restart after SFC completes, then retry Windows Update. If either command reports that it could not repair everything, note the exact message and avoid repeatedly running the same command without addressing the underlying storage, service or software conflict.
Could antivirus, a firewall, VPN or drivers be blocking the update?
Yes. Microsoft identifies third-party antivirus, outdated software and incompatible drivers as possible upgrade blockers. The 0x80070020 code in particular can indicate that another process, antivirus or firewall has a file locked.
Isolate security software carefully
First update the security product itself if an update is available. If the failure continues, use the product’s documented temporary-disable or uninstall procedure only long enough to test Windows Update. Preserve activation details and reinstall information before uninstalling, and restore protection immediately after the test. Do not treat disabling protection as a permanent fix.
Test without a VPN
Disconnect a VPN while downloading and installing the update, especially when 0x800f0922 appears. Reconnect it after the update attempt. If the update works only without the VPN, its network configuration is the likely conflict.

Use a clean restart to find startup conflicts
A clean restart loads Windows with nonessential startup programs and services disabled. Use it to determine whether a background utility or driver is intercepting Windows Update, then re-enable items in groups to identify the conflict. Keep a record of every change so normal startup can be restored after testing.
What should I do about USB devices, docks and external drives?
Disconnect nonessential USB devices before retrying. Docks, storage devices, printers and adapters can load drivers or reserve drive letters that interfere with an upgrade. Leave a device connected only when it is required for input or network access, and reconnect accessories one at a time after Windows Update completes so a newly introduced failure can be identified.
Which fix should I try for my symptom?
This decision table summarizes the escalation without treating any step as a guaranteed cure.

What does Windows 10’s end of support mean for an update failure?
Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance or security fixes for Windows 10, and recommends moving to Windows 11.
Recommended Free Tools
This changes the diagnosis. A service that is disabled, a corrupt cache, insufficient space or damaged system files can still be repaired using the steps above. However, if the computer is simply seeking a normal Windows 10 update after the end-of-support date, the absence of a new update may reflect lifecycle status rather than a fault in the PC. Check the exact update name and the date Windows last offered it before escalating repairs.
What should I do if every manual step fails?
Write down the exact error code, the percentage at which installation stops, whether the failure occurs during download or restart, and which remedies you completed. Confirm that the Windows drive meets the space requirement and that the clock, network, services and external hardware checks are still correct. If DISM, SFC or CHKDSK reported errors, keep those messages for a technician or Microsoft support workflow. For a supported Windows 10 servicing scenario, the combination of a clean restart, cache reset and system-file repair is the final practical escalation covered here; for an unsupported Windows 10 device, plan a move to Windows 11 when the hardware and edition permit it.

Windows 10 update troubleshooting FAQ
How long should I wait when the percentage does not move?
There is no fixed safe wait time because connection speed, network settings and update size determine the duration. Watch for disk or network activity and any change in the installation message; if the display remains unchanged and Windows responds normally, restart and use the troubleshooter instead of repeatedly forcing power off.
Can deleting the SoftwareDistribution contents remove my documents?
The folder stores Windows Update’s downloaded and temporary data, not your normal Documents, Pictures or saved-game folders. A backup is still prudent because any operation inside the Windows directory requires administrator access and a mistake in the path could affect unrelated files.
Will a USB storage drive repair Windows Update?
No. Microsoft mentions USB storage only as optional extra capacity when the system drive lacks room for an upgrade. It can help you move personal files off the Windows drive, but it does not repair services, cache corruption or damaged system files.
Do I need to be online to run the troubleshooter?
The troubleshooter can inspect local services and settings without downloading a repair package, but a stable connection is still needed to obtain the update afterward. If the network itself is unreliable, fix that connection first so a successful local diagnosis is not followed by another interrupted download.
