If Windows 11 opens Automatic Repair or shows a Startup Repair screen, begin in Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE): choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair > Restart. The tool checks common boot failures such as damaged system files, corrupted Boot Configuration Data (BCD), a damaged master boot record (MBR), incompatible drivers and registry errors. It is designed to repair startup problems without removing personal files, but it cannot correct every failure. If it does not work, move through update removal, System Restore, Safe Mode, boot-file commands and only then Reset or reinstall Windows. Back up important data whenever you can because Microsoft warns that some recovery choices can cause data loss.
What is Windows 11 Startup Repair, and what can it fix?
Microsoft describes Startup Repair as “a Windows recovery tool that can fix certain system problems that might prevent Windows from starting.” It runs outside the normal desktop, scans the boot process and applies an automated repair when it finds a supported fault. Typical targets include missing or damaged Windows system files, corrupted BCD data, a damaged MBR, an incompatible driver and certain registry errors.

Startup Repair is not a general hardware diagnostic and it is not a replacement for reinstalling a badly damaged system. A machine that never gets beyond its manufacturer logo or firmware setup may have a storage, memory or other hardware problem rather than a Windows boot problem. Use the escalation order below so that you try the least disruptive recovery option first.
How do I open Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE)?
Use the route that matches what your computer can still do. WinRE may appear automatically after failed boots; if it does, use its menus directly. If the built-in environment never appears, Windows 11 installation media provides another route.

When Windows enters Automatic Repair by itself
- Allow the recovery screen to finish loading.
- Select Advanced options rather than Restart if you need the repair tools.
- Open Troubleshoot > Advanced options. Startup Repair, update removal, System Restore, Startup Settings and Command Prompt are listed there when available.
When the built-in recovery screen never appears
Start the computer from Windows 11 installation media or a Windows recovery drive. At the first setup screen, choose Repair your computer, then open Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair. Installation media is also useful when the internal recovery partition is damaged.
On an encrypted device, WinRE can request the BitLocker recovery key before it will continue. Have that key available before changing boot files or using another recovery action; without the key, the encrypted Windows volume may remain inaccessible to the recovery tools.
What should I check before running Startup Repair?
Remove devices that are not needed to boot
Shut the computer down and disconnect USB storage, docks, printers, card readers and other accessories. Leave only the display, keyboard and mouse connected. A removable drive with bootable media or a faulty USB device can change the boot path and make a Windows failure look worse than it is. Reconnect devices one at a time after Windows starts normally.
Identify the stage where startup stops
Microsoft separates startup into PreBoot, Boot Manager, OS Loader and Kernel phases. A failure before Windows Boot Manager appears points toward firmware, storage or hardware checks; a failure after the Windows logo is more consistent with boot files, drivers or system components. This distinction matters because Startup Repair addresses Windows startup faults, not a dead drive or a machine that cannot complete firmware checks.
Protect data before making changes
If you can reach another computer, copy irreplaceable files from the affected drive or use a recovery environment to back them up. Do this before Reset this PC or a reinstall. Microsoft cautions that some recovery options can result in data loss, and a failing drive can deteriorate while repeated repairs are attempted.
How do I run Windows 11 Startup Repair?
Run the built-in repair once before moving to more invasive options. It is the first choice when Windows reaches WinRE but not the desktop.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Open Troubleshoot > Advanced options in WinRE.
- Select Startup Repair.
- Choose a Windows 11 account if prompted and enter its password.
- Provide the BitLocker recovery key if the encrypted drive requests it.
- Select Restart and let the scan complete without powering off the machine.
Startup Repair may restart the computer more than once. If Windows reaches the sign-in screen, test a normal restart before reconnecting accessories. When the process cannot correct the problem, WinRE normally returns a message or sends you back to Advanced options instead of silently proving that the hardware is healthy.
The documented process creates a diagnostic log at %windir%\System32\LogFiles\Srt\Srttrail.txt. From WinRE, the Windows directory can have a different drive letter than it does during a normal boot, so locate the correct volume before opening the log in Command Prompt.
What should I do if Startup Repair fails after a Windows update?
When the boot loop began immediately after an update, uninstalling the latest update is a more targeted and reversible action than resetting Windows. In WinRE choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates, then select the available quality or feature-update option. This recovery choice is intended to preserve personal files and installed applications, although Windows may need to reinstall an update later.
If removing the update does not restore startup, continue with the recovery choices below rather than repeatedly running the same repair.
How do I use System Restore or point-in-time restore?
System Restore
Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore when a restore point exists from before the failure. System Restore rolls back protected system files, drivers and settings while leaving personal documents in place. It can undo a problematic driver or configuration change, but it does not recover files that were already deleted and it may remove applications installed after the selected point.
Point-in-time restore on Windows 11 24H2 or later
Windows 11 version 24H2 and later may offer a newer point-in-time restore option. Where it is available, the snapshot can roll back apps, settings and personal files to the captured state. Availability depends on the Windows edition and whether a usable snapshot exists, so read the confirmation screen carefully before accepting the rollback.
When should I use Startup Settings and Safe Mode?
Safe Mode is most useful when the machine gets through early boot but crashes, loops or displays a stop error during the later OS-loader or kernel stages. In WinRE choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then select the Safe Mode option shown on screen.
If Windows starts in Safe Mode, do not immediately delete random system files. First inspect the most recently installed driver, service or security product, and review Event Viewer logs for the time of the failure. Remove or roll back the change that coincides with the crash, restart normally and test again. Safe Mode is a diagnostic state; it does not by itself repair damaged boot files.
How do I repair Windows 11 boot files from Command Prompt?
Use Command Prompt for messages that point to missing boot data, an unrecognized operating system or a damaged boot loader. Open Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt from WinRE or from installation media. Drive letters in this environment often differ from normal Windows, so verify the Windows volume before running any command.
Find the Windows volume first
- At the prompt, run
diskpart, thenlist volume. - Note the volume that contains the Windows directory, and run
exit. - Test the candidate letter, for example
dir D:\Windows. If that directory is not present, try the next candidate letter.
The examples below use the letter D: only as an example. Substitute the letter you verified; using the wrong volume can repair a different installation or produce a misleading error.
Run the standard Bootrec checks
- Run
BOOTREC /FIXMBRto write a compatible master boot record. - Run
BOOTREC /FIXBOOTto write a new boot sector when the existing one is damaged. - Run
BOOTREC /ScanOSto search for Windows installations that are not currently listed in the boot configuration.
Rebuild a damaged BCD store
For a BCD-specific failure, Microsoft documents exporting the existing store, clearing its hidden, system and read-only attributes, renaming it and rebuilding it. With the verified Windows letter substituted, the sequence is:
bcdedit /export D:\BCD_Backup
attrib D:\boot\bcd -h -r -s
ren D:\boot\bcd bcd.old
bootrec /rebuildbcd
Confirm each command completes before entering the next one. If D:\boot\bcd is not found, stop and recheck the volume and the firmware layout instead of creating a new path at random; an EFI system partition can use a different letter in WinRE. Restart after the operation and remove installation media so the computer tries the repaired internal drive.

What recovery option should I choose next?
The best option depends on where the computer stops, the likely cause and what you can afford to lose. This table places Microsoft’s less disruptive choices before reset or reinstall.
| Option | Best fit | Personal files | Apps and settings | BitLocker key or media | Reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Startup Repair | Common boot-file, system-file, driver or registry startup faults | Designed to preserve them | Normally preserved | BitLocker key may be requested; media only if WinRE is unavailable | High |
| Uninstall Updates | Failure that began after a quality or feature update | Preserved by the recovery choice | Installed apps are intended to remain | BitLocker key may be requested | High |
| System Restore | A usable restore point predates the failure | Personal files remain | System settings and later-installed apps can be rolled back | BitLocker key may be requested | Usually reversible only by another restore point |
| Point-in-time restore | Windows 11 24H2 or later with a valid snapshot | Rolled back to the snapshot | Apps and settings roll back too | BitLocker key may be requested | Depends on available snapshots |
| Startup Settings/Safe Mode | Later-stage crashes, loops or stop errors | Preserved | No automatic repair; used for diagnosis | BitLocker key may be requested | High |
| Command Prompt | Explicit MBR, boot-sector or BCD errors | Preserved when commands target boot data only | Preserved | BitLocker key may be requested; installation media can provide WinRE | Moderate; incorrect commands can make booting worse |
| Reset this PC | Earlier recovery tools fail and Windows components remain badly damaged | Choice to keep or remove them | Apps and settings are removed | May require the recovery key | Low once completed |
| Reinstall Windows | Reset is unavailable or the installation is beyond repair | Back up first; outcome depends on the installation method | Removed; manufacturer media may restore factory applications and hardware-specific drivers | Installation or recovery media required | Lowest |
When is Reset this PC or a reinstall justified?
Use Reset this PC only after Startup Repair, update removal, restore tools, Safe Mode and boot-file repair have failed or are unavailable. Reset can offer a choice to keep personal files, but it removes installed applications and resets settings. Read the exact confirmation screen for the selected edition and reset method before proceeding.
A Windows installation USB or recovery drive can reinstall the operating system when the internal recovery tools are missing. Manufacturer recovery media is another option when you need hardware-specific drivers and factory applications. Back up files first, disconnect unnecessary devices and keep the BitLocker key available; a reinstall is not a test that the original storage device is healthy.
Can Quick Machine Recovery fix a repeated Windows 11 startup failure?
Windows 11 version 24H2 or later includes Quick Machine Recovery as a best-effort recovery path for some repeated startup failures. It can enter recovery mode, connect to the internet, check Windows Update for a Microsoft-provided fix and restart if one is available.

Availability depends on the Windows edition and administrator policy. Microsoft’s current guidance enables it by default on Windows 11 Home, while Pro and Enterprise computers may require an administrator to enable it. Quick Machine Recovery does not replace local WinRE tools, an installation drive or hardware diagnosis, and it cannot guarantee a successful repair when no applicable fix is available.
What if the computer never reaches WinRE or Windows Setup?
If the display remains at a manufacturer logo, firmware menu or a storage-device error, treat that as a PreBoot problem first. Confirm that the internal drive is detected in firmware, disconnect external boot media and check the manufacturer’s hardware diagnostics. Startup Repair cannot repair a drive that firmware cannot see or a machine that fails before Windows Boot Manager loads.
If firmware detects the drive but the internal recovery environment is missing, create or obtain Windows 11 installation media on another computer and use Repair your computer. If the installation media also fails to start, test another USB port or drive and investigate hardware before repeatedly rewriting boot data.
How can I read the Startup Repair diagnostic log?
From WinRE, open Command Prompt and locate the Windows volume as described above. The log is normally at %windir%\System32\LogFiles\Srt\Srttrail.txt; in a recovery prompt, replace the environment variable with the verified Windows drive letter when opening the file. Look for the final detected action and the named file or driver, then use that evidence to choose update removal, Safe Mode or a targeted boot-file repair rather than repeating Startup Repair without a change.

Windows 11 Startup Repair FAQ
Why does my computer keep returning to Automatic Repair?
A repeated loop means the underlying boot fault was not corrected, or a storage, driver or hardware problem is triggering the failure again. Check the Srttrail log, identify the startup phase and move to the next recovery option instead of launching the same scan indefinitely.
Will Startup Repair remove my installed games?
Startup Repair is intended to repair boot components rather than uninstall applications. Game files can still be at risk if the drive is failing or if you later choose Reset or reinstall, so copy saves and other irreplaceable data before those actions.
Can I run these repairs with no internet connection?
Most WinRE tools, including Startup Repair, System Restore and Bootrec, run locally. Quick Machine Recovery is the exception: its update-based attempt needs an internet connection and an applicable Microsoft-provided fix.

Enter the correct recovery key; if it is unavailable, recovery actions that need the Windows volume may not be able to proceed, so do not guess at boot-file commands on a locked drive.
Is Safe Mode a permanent repair?
No. Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of drivers and services so you can identify a recent change that causes a crash. Once the offending driver, service or setting is corrected, restart normally and verify that ordinary startup works.
