If Windows 7 shows 0x80070422, open services.msc, set the Windows Update service to Automatic, start it, restart the computer, and run Windows Update again. If the service repair does not clear the failure, reset the update cache in C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. The title’s 0X800704022 has one extra zero; verify the exact code on your screen before changing anything. These steps can restore the local update workflow, but they cannot bring back Windows 7 support, which ended in January 2020.
Microsoft identifies 0x80070422 as a disabled or stopped Windows Update service. It is a service-state error, not evidence by itself that your hardware or Windows system files are defective.

What does Windows 7 error 0x80070422 mean?
Microsoft describes this error as occurring when the Windows Update service stops working or is not running. In practical terms, Windows cannot use the service that coordinates update checks and installation. The code does not, by itself, prove that your computer has damaged hardware, corrupted system files, or malware.
| Text shown | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
0x80070422 |
Microsoft’s documented code for a disabled or stopped Windows Update service | Check the Windows Update service in Services |
0X800704022 |
A nine-digit variant with an extra zero; it is not the form used in Microsoft’s documentation | Read the message again and confirm the exact characters |
| Service cannot be started because it is disabled | A description consistent with the service-state problem | Change Startup type to Automatic, then start the service |
Letters in a hexadecimal error code can appear in upper- or lower-case, so 0x80070422 and 0X80070422 represent the same sequence. The additional zero in 0X800704022 is different, which is why confirming the on-screen text is the first step.

How do I fix 0x80070422 in Windows 7?
Use the built-in Services console. The following sequence is Microsoft’s documented remediation for this code.
- Open the Services console. Press Win + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. If Windows asks for administrator approval, use an account that is allowed to change services. - Locate Windows Update. In the alphabetical list, find the entry named Windows Update. Select it once so you can read its current status.
- Open its properties. Right-click Windows Update and choose Properties. You can also double-click the entry.
- Change Startup type. In the properties window, open the Startup type menu and select Automatic. This setting tells Windows to make the service available during normal startup rather than leaving it disabled.
- Start the service. If the service status says Stopped, select Start. Wait for the status to change before continuing. If the Start button is unavailable because the service is already running, continue with the next step.
- Save the setting. Select Apply, then OK to close the properties window. Applying the change before closing is important; otherwise the Startup type may remain unchanged.
- Restart Windows 7. Restart the computer normally. A restart makes you test the saved service configuration from a fresh Windows session.
- Try Windows Update again. Open Windows Update from Control Panel and run the update check or retry the update that failed. Note whether the original code returns or whether Windows displays a different message.
If the service starts and the same update then completes, no cache reset is needed. Do not change unrelated services merely because they appear stopped; the documented repair targets Windows Update.
What should I do if Windows Update will not start?
First, return to services.msc and verify the exact entry and setting. A service that was set to Automatic but never started still needs the Start action, followed by Apply and OK.
If the status remains Stopped
- Open Windows Update properties again and confirm that Startup type still reads Automatic.
- Select Start once more and wait for the status field to change.
- Record any text Windows shows when the service refuses to start. The exact wording and the exact hexadecimal code are more useful than paraphrasing the message.
- Restart the computer and test Windows Update after the restart, rather than assuming that a changed drop-down menu alone completed the repair.
If the service starts but the update still fails
A running service removes the condition identified by 0x80070422, but it does not guarantee that every later update problem has the same cause. If the original error remains after a restart, use the cache reset below. If Windows shows a new code, treat that as a separate failure and preserve the new code when seeking further help.
How do I reset the Windows Update cache?
Microsoft’s fallback procedure is to rebuild the contents of the SoftwareDistribution cache. Use it only after confirming the Windows Update service state. You are deleting the contents of one update-cache directory, not unrelated Windows folders.

C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. Type or paste that path into the address bar so you do not accidentally open a similarly named directory. - Delete the contents. Select the files and folders inside
SoftwareDistributionand delete them. Leave theSoftwareDistributionfolder itself in place, and do not delete neighboring folders underC:Windows. - Start Windows Update again. Return to
services.msc, open Windows Update, select Start, then choose Apply and OK. - Retry the update. Run Windows Update again and note the result. The first check after a cache reset may need to recreate update-cache data, so allow the process to finish rather than interrupting it immediately.
If Windows says a file is in use, stop the Windows Update service again and confirm that you are working inside the specified directory. Do not broaden the deletion to other Windows folders; the documented fallback is limited to the contents of SoftwareDistribution.

Success means more than seeing the service set to Automatic. The practical test is a restart followed by another Windows Update check.
- Service starts and the update installs: the service-state problem was addressed and the attempted update completed.
- Service starts but the same 0x80070422 code returns: confirm that the setting was applied, then perform the cache reset and retry.
- A different error code appears: the Windows Update service is no longer the only diagnosis supported by the original code. Write down the new code before trying another remedy.
- The update check finds nothing: that result is separate from whether the service can run. On Windows 7, the platform’s support status also limits what current updates can be offered.
Keep a short record of the exact code, whether Windows Update was Stopped or Running, whether Start succeeded, and what happened after the restart. Those details prevent you from repeating the same step when the failure has changed.
Does fixing 0x80070422 make Windows 7 supported again?
No. Repairing the service restores a local Windows Update function; it does not extend Microsoft’s lifecycle for Windows 7. Microsoft’s lifecycle record gives January 15, 2020 as the end of extended support, while its public end-of-support guidance states January 14, 2020. The one-day difference reflects how the date is presented across Microsoft lifecycle and support pages and time-zone context.
| Lifecycle fact | Meaning for this repair |
|---|---|
| January 14, 2020 — Microsoft end-of-support guidance | Windows 7 stopped receiving normal support after this date |
| January 15, 2020 — Microsoft lifecycle record for extended support end | The lifecycle record presents the support boundary on this date |
| After the support boundary | A successful service repair cannot guarantee that current security or software updates are available |
If this is a Windows 7 gaming or general-purpose PC, plan migration rather than treating the service repair as a long-term support solution. Microsoft recommends moving to a supported Windows release such as Windows 11, or replacing hardware that cannot meet the requirements for a supported release. Check compatibility for the specific computer before purchasing or installing another Windows edition.

Should I repair the service or migrate from Windows 7?
Use the repair when you need to restore the local update workflow or confirm the source of the message. Use migration planning when the computer must remain eligible for normal security and software updates.
| Decision check | If the answer is yes | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
Is the exact code 0x80070422? |
The message matches Microsoft’s documented service-state error | Follow the Services procedure first |
| Can Windows Update be set to Automatic and started? | The local service configuration can be repaired | Restart and retry the update |
Does clearing SoftwareDistribution resolve the retry? |
The cache was a contributing condition | Continue testing the update workflow, but do not infer that Windows 7 is supported |
| Can the hardware run a supported Windows release? | Migration is technically feasible | Plan the move and verify the target release requirements |
| Can the hardware not meet supported-release requirements? | A service repair will not solve the platform lifecycle issue | Evaluate replacement hardware or another supported computing option |
These are separate decisions: the first three concern the immediate error, while the last two concern the operating system’s future support. Completing the first does not automatically answer the second.

- Do not copy the extra zero. Search for and troubleshoot the exact code shown by Windows. The documented code is
0x80070422. - Do not stop after changing the menu. Select Start when the service is stopped, save with Apply and OK, restart, and test.
- Do not reset the cache first. Confirm the service state before deleting cache contents; the cache reset is the fallback procedure.
- Do not delete unrelated Windows directories. The fallback names only
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionand its contents. - Do not interpret a successful start as a guarantee. Later update failures can have other causes, and Windows 7’s ended support remains unchanged.
- Do not assume a new code is the old diagnosis. Record any new code and reassess rather than repeating the same service steps indefinitely.
