If Windows 7 shows error 0x80070422 while checking for updates, enable the Windows Update service, set its Startup type to Automatic, start it, restart the computer, and check again. Microsoft identifies this code as ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED: the Windows Update service is disabled, stopped, or otherwise not running.
Searches sometimes show 0X080070422 with an extra zero. The documented Windows code is 0x80070422. If enabling the service does not clear the error, reset the Windows Update cache; on older Windows 7 installations, investigate the SHA-2 servicing prerequisite branch only after those basic repairs.

What does Windows 7 error 0x80070422 mean?
Error 0x80070422 normally means that Windows Update cannot run because its service is disabled or stopped. Microsoft’s Windows Client documentation describes the condition this way: “This issue occurs when the Windows Update service stops working or isn’t running.” The code is a service-state problem first, not a request to replace Windows files or reinstall the operating system.
The spelling 0X080070422 contains an extra zero and is not the usual Microsoft format. Use 0x80070422 when searching Microsoft support pages or checking whether another user has the same problem.

What should I check before changing the service?
- Confirm that the message appears when Windows Update checks for or installs updates, rather than in an unrelated application.
- Save open work. You will need to restart Windows after changing the service.
- Use an account allowed to change Windows services. If Windows asks for administrator credentials, provide them before continuing.
- Write down the exact code and any accompanying text. A different code may require a different repair path.
Start with the service setting because it is the narrowest and most reversible change. Do not delete folders outside the Windows Update cache, and do not install a random update package merely because its number looks similar to one mentioned in a support article.
How do I re-enable the Windows Update service?
Use the Services console. Microsoft’s primary sequence for 0x80070422 is to set Windows Update to Automatic, start it if it is stopped, apply the change, restart Windows, and check for updates again.
- Press Win+R to open the Run dialog.
- Type
services.msc, then press Enter. The Services window opens. - Scroll through the list and locate Windows Update.
- Double-click Windows Update to open its Properties window.
- Open the Startup type menu and select Automatic.
- Read the Service status. If it says Stopped, click Start.
- Click Apply, then OK to close the properties window.
- Restart the computer.
- After Windows starts, open Windows Update and select the option to check for updates again.
What result should I expect?
If the disabled service was the cause, Windows Update should proceed past the previous 0x80070422 message. The first check after a restart can take longer than usual while the service initializes and evaluates pending updates. Let the check finish before deciding that the repair failed.
What if the Start button is unavailable or the service stops again?
Make sure you opened the properties for Windows Update, not a similarly named entry. If the service is set to Automatic but immediately returns to Stopped, record that behavior and continue to the cache-reset procedure below. A persistent failure after the cache is rebuilt points toward the Windows 7 legacy-servicing branch rather than another change to the same setting.

How do I reset the Windows Update cache?
Microsoft lists resetting Windows Update components as a mitigation when enabling the service does not resolve 0x80070422. Its cache procedure removes the contents of the SoftwareDistribution folder while Windows Update is stopped, then starts the service again. Windows Update recreates the cache as needed.
- Open the Services console by pressing Win+R, entering
services.msc, and pressing Enter. - Find Windows Update, open its properties, and click Stop if the service is running. Leave the Services window open.
- Open Windows Explorer and navigate to
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. - Delete the files and folders inside
SoftwareDistribution. Do not delete theSoftwareDistributionfolder itself, and do not remove unrelated directories underC:Windows. - Return to the Services window, open Windows Update again, and click Start.
- Restart the computer, then run Windows Update again.
The cache reset is broader than changing one service option because it discards downloaded update data that may be unusable. It does not replace the operating system or manually install an update package. If Windows refuses to delete an item, confirm that Windows Update is stopped before retrying; do not force-delete unrelated files.

Use this branch only after confirming that Windows Update is enabled and after trying the cache reset. Microsoft reports that older Windows devices affected by discontinued SHA-1-based Windows Update endpoints may stop receiving updates until the required SHA-2 updates are installed manually.
This is a legacy-servicing problem, not a reason to change the Windows Update Startup type repeatedly. Check Microsoft’s Windows 7 guidance for the SHA-2 prerequisite that matches your system and the update package you are trying to install. Requirements can differ by package and system state.

What is KB2533552 for?
Microsoft lists KB2533552 for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 when a manually installed MSU package reports a servicing-stack prerequisite problem. Treat that number as a package-specific prerequisite reference, not as a universal fix for every 0x80070422 occurrence. Install only the prerequisite identified for your edition and package; substituting an arbitrary update can leave the servicing problem unresolved.
How should I handle a manual MSU installation?
- Identify the Windows 7 edition, architecture, and the exact update package that produced the prerequisite message.
- Read the Microsoft documentation for that package and note any stated SHA-2 or servicing-stack requirement.
- Obtain the matching prerequisite package from Microsoft’s update documentation.
- Install the prerequisite first, following the package’s instructions, and restart when requested.
- Retry the original update or return to Windows Update after the prerequisite is installed.
Do not skip the service and cache checks simply because the computer is old. The SHA-2 branch is appropriate when legacy endpoint or servicing evidence points there; it is not the first response to a service that is plainly disabled.

Use the least invasive path that matches the symptom. The following order reflects Microsoft’s direct procedure first, then the cache mitigation, then the system-specific legacy-servicing investigation.
| Path | Scope | Risk and reversibility | When to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Enable Windows Update service | Changes the service Startup type and running state. | Low; the setting can be changed again in Services. | First response when 0x80070422 appears. |
| Reset SoftwareDistribution cache | Removes files and folders inside the Windows Update cache so it can be rebuilt. | Low to moderate; it discards cached update data but does not replace Windows system directories. | When the service starts but Windows Update still returns the code or cannot proceed. |
| SHA-2 and servicing-stack investigation | Addresses legacy Windows 7 update endpoints and package prerequisites. | Higher; it involves selecting and installing a system-specific MSU package. | When older-device endpoint changes or a manual package explicitly reports a prerequisite problem. |
What common mistakes make 0x80070422 harder to fix?
- Using the mistyped code: Searching for
0X080070422can hide the Microsoft documentation for0x80070422. Normalize the code before comparing instructions. - Changing the wrong service: The required entry is named Windows Update. Selecting another service does not repair this code.
- Starting without setting Automatic: Clicking Start once may not persist the intended configuration. Set Startup type to Automatic, apply it, and then restart.
- Deleting the cache folder itself: Remove the contents of
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributiononly. Keep the parent folder and avoid unrelated Windows directories. - Installing an arbitrary KB: KB2533552 is cited for a particular servicing-stack prerequisite scenario. It is not a blanket replacement for the service repair.
- Jumping to manual servicing too early: The legacy SHA-2 path is more involved and system-specific. Use it after the service and cache checks, or when the MSU installer identifies the prerequisite.
How do I verify that the repair worked?
- Restart Windows after changing the service or rebuilding the cache.
- Open Windows Update and start a fresh check rather than relying on the earlier failed result.
- Confirm that the original 0x80070422 message does not return during the check.
- If an update is offered, allow the installation to complete and restart when Windows requests it.
- If the same code returns, note whether Windows Update is running, whether the cache was rebuilt, and whether a manual MSU package reported a SHA-2 or servicing-stack prerequisite. Those details determine which branch to follow next.
If you want an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues, clean temporary and cache files, check Windows settings and missing updates, and provide an app-crash log. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary, and its free trial lasts at least two days before a subscription.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will clearing SoftwareDistribution delete my personal documents?
The documented procedure targets files and folders inside the Windows Update cache at C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, not personal folders such as Documents or Pictures. Close Windows Update first so files are not locked, and avoid deleting anything outside that cache path.

Does KB2533552 apply to every Windows 7 computer?
No. Microsoft lists it for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 when a manually installed MSU package reports a servicing-stack prerequisite issue. The correct prerequisite depends on the package and the system’s current servicing state.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy can an old PC fail even after the Windows Update service is enabled?
Older Windows devices may rely on discontinued SHA-1-based update endpoints. Microsoft says those systems may need SHA-2 updates installed manually, which is a separate legacy-servicing condition from a stopped service.
Should I keep trying the service fix if it repeatedly stops?
After confirming Startup type is Automatic, use the cache-reset procedure and restart once more. If the service still will not remain running, preserve the exact error and any MSU prerequisite message before attempting a system-specific SHA-2 or servicing-stack installation.
