Windows recreates the required cache data when the service runs. If a file refuses to delete, confirm that Windows Update is stopped and close any File Explorer window or update-related program still using the folder; do not force-delete files that remain locked.

- Obtain the packages that match the installed Windows edition and system architecture. Do not install a package intended for a different edition or 32-bit/64-bit architecture.
- Install the applicable packages.
- Restart Windows before trying Windows Update again.
These packages address modern update-signing and servicing prerequisites; they are separate from enabling the Windows Update service. Installing them therefore does not replace the Services, cache or component-reset steps when the service itself is disabled.
Why can a successful repair still leave Windows 7 unable to update?

The service will not start
Restart once, open Services again, and verify that Windows Update still shows Automatic. The reset commands return an error
Check that Command Prompt was opened with Run as administrator and that each command was entered exactly as shown. Run the lines one at a time; a rename command cannot succeed if the destination name already exists, so record the message before making another change.
Windows Update downloads but installation fails
Recheck the system clock, network connection and available disk space, then review recently installed third-party drivers. A service repair cannot correct every package-specific installation problem, and Windows 7’s end-of-support status can prevent normal delivery even when the local service is healthy.
