Error 0xC80070422 (often shown as 0x80070422) usually means the Windows Update service is disabled, stopped, or otherwise not running. On Windows 8 or 8.1, the first repair is to enable that service in services.msc, set its startup type to Automatic, start it, restart the computer, and try Windows Update again. Back up important files before changing services or clearing update caches. If the error returns, use the legacy Windows Update troubleshooter, verify administrator access and connectivity, reset the SoftwareDistribution cache, and check the system clock. These steps can restore the update mechanism, but they cannot bring back security support for Windows 8 or 8.1, both of which are out of support.

What does Windows 8 error 0xC80070422 mean?

Microsoft Learn classifies 0x80070422 as ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED. Microsoft describes the condition this way: “This issue occurs when the Windows Update service stops working or isn’t running.” Windows may display the same condition with a leading C as 0xC80070422, or in the shorter 0x80070422 form.

The code identifies a Windows Update service problem. By itself, it does not prove that the computer has malware, a failing hard drive, or a particular third-party application problem. Start with the service repair instead of deleting system files or changing unrelated registry settings.

What should I do before repairing Windows Update?

Make a current backup of documents, saved games, photos, browser data, and any other files you cannot replace. Microsoft’s update guidance recommends backing up before troubleshooting and specifically notes that you can connect a USB drive and copy important files to it.

  • If the computer is used for work or gaming, record application installers, license details, and save-file locations before making changes.
  • Stay signed in with an administrator account, or have administrator credentials available; changing a service’s startup type normally requires elevation.

Do not interrupt the computer while it is restarting or while Windows is applying an update. If the machine contains irreplaceable data and the backup cannot be verified, stop here and complete the backup first.

How do I fix 0xC80070422 by enabling Windows Update?

This is the primary repair and usually takes only a few minutes. The labels below apply to Windows 8 and 8.1; newer Windows versions use different Settings pages.

  1. Open the Services console. Press Win+R, type services.msc, and press Enter. Approve the User Account Control prompt if it appears.
  2. Locate Windows Update. In the list, find Windows Update. The list is alphabetical, so scrolling to the W section is usually fastest.
  3. Open its properties. Right-click Windows Update and choose Properties.
  4. Set the startup type. In the Startup type menu, choose Automatic. This allows Windows to start the service during normal operation instead of leaving it disabled.
  5. Start the service. If the service status says Stopped, click Start. If the Start button is unavailable while the service is already running, leave it running.
  6. Save the change. Select Apply, then OK. Close the Services window.
  7. Restart Windows. A restart ensures that the changed service configuration is loaded cleanly.
  8. Try Windows Update again. On Windows 8, open the Windows Update entry exposed through Control Panel or PC settings. Do not follow Windows 10 or Windows 11 instructions that refer to labels absent from your edition.

If updates now search or install without the service-disabled message, the immediate error is resolved. Leave the service set to Automatic unless you have a documented administrative reason to manage it manually.

What if 0xC80070422 still appears after the service is started?

Work through these checks in order. Test Windows Update after each material change so you know which action made a difference.

Run the legacy Windows Update troubleshooter

Open Control Panel’s troubleshooting area and select the Windows Update troubleshooter if your Windows 8 or 8.1 installation still exposes it. Let it apply the repairs it reports, restart if requested, and test Windows Update again. The exact wording and location can vary by edition and installed updates.

Confirm the network and administrator access

  • Open a browser and verify that the computer has a working internet connection rather than only a connection to a local router.
  • If you use a metered, captive-portal, or heavily filtered connection, complete its sign-in process before checking for updates.
  • Confirm that your Windows account has administrator access. A standard account may be able to view the service but not change its startup configuration.
  • If the computer is managed by an employer, school, or family administrator, a policy may intentionally control update services. Ask the administrator before changing policy-controlled settings.

Check the date and time

Open the Windows 8 date and time controls and verify the date, time, time zone, and daylight-saving setting. A substantially incorrect clock can interfere with secure connections used by update services. Correct the settings, restart if Windows requests it, and run Windows Update again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reset the SoftwareDistribution cache

Windows stores temporary update downloads and metadata in C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. A damaged cache can prevent a newly enabled service from completing its work. Clearing the contents forces Windows Update to build a fresh cache; it does not delete your personal documents.

  1. Press Win+R, enter services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Right-click Windows Update and choose Stop. Leave the Services window open or remember how to return to it.
  3. Open File Explorer and browse to C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution.
  4. Select the items inside the folder and delete them. Do not delete the SoftwareDistribution folder itself. If Windows says a file is in use, return to Services and confirm that Windows Update is stopped, then try again.
  5. Go back to Services, right-click Windows Update, choose Properties, and click Start if it is stopped. Confirm that Startup type remains Automatic.
  6. Restart the computer and check for updates.

The first scan after this reset may take longer because Windows has to recreate its local update data. Do not repeatedly delete the cache while an update is downloading or installing.

Check relevant drivers and connected hardware

Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking third-party drivers when update problems persist. Disconnect nonessential USB devices, docks, and adapters temporarily and try the update again. If the error began after adding hardware or installing a driver, obtain a driver intended for your exact Windows 8 or 8.1 edition and device model from the hardware manufacturer; do not install a package intended for a different Windows release merely because its name looks similar.

Use version-appropriate system-file repair guidance

If Windows components appear corrupted, use Microsoft’s supported system-file repair instructions for the exact Windows version and edition installed on the computer. Commands and servicing procedures written for Windows 10 or Windows 11 are not automatically interchangeable with Windows 8.1. The available guidance for your version should specify the correct command, required administrator console, and expected completion message.

Do not copy random command sequences from forums, rename system files, or edit service-related registry entries as a first response. Those actions can create a second problem and make a later repair or migration harder.

How can I tell whether the repair worked?

A successful local repair has several observable signs:

  • Windows Update starts searching instead of immediately reporting that the service is disabled.
  • The Windows Update service remains running after a restart, with Startup type still set to Automatic.
  • An update downloads or installs without the same 0xC80070422 message.
  • The error does not return when you perform a second check after restarting.

One successful scan does not prove that every update will install. Record the exact error text if another code appears; a different code may indicate a separate download, servicing, storage, or compatibility issue.

Is repairing Windows 8 Update enough, or should I migrate?

Repairing the service can restore the local update client, but it does not change Windows 8’s support status. Microsoft lists Windows 8 as reaching end of support on January 12, 2016. Windows 8.1 support ended for users on January 10, 2023; Microsoft says that technical assistance, software updates, security updates, and fixes no longer continue, and that Windows 8.1 has no Extended Security Updates program.

Microsoft’s lifecycle table displays a Windows 8.1 extended-support end date of January 11, 2023 in Pacific Time, while Microsoft’s user-facing support notice uses January 10, 2023. The difference is a time-zone presentation, not an extension of support.

If the computer cannot move to a supported Windows release, Microsoft recommends migrating to a supported release or replacing the PC after a verified backup. Consider the repair-versus-migration choice using the following questions:

Decision factor Repair the existing installation Migrate or replace
Does Windows Update start? Useful when enabling the service restores searching and installation. Not dependent on repairing the old service.
Does the error return after restart? A recurring error means the local cause remains unresolved and needs further diagnosis. A clean installation or newer PC avoids carrying the old service state forward.
Can the system receive supported updates? No. A successful repair does not extend Windows 8 or 8.1 support. A supported Windows release can receive updates according to its own lifecycle.
Hardware compatibility Existing hardware is already known to run the current installation. Check processor, memory, storage, firmware, and driver requirements before upgrading or buying.
Backup and application transfer Usually limited to the precautionary backup and any files affected by troubleshooting. Requires a verified file backup plus reinstalling applications and restoring settings or game saves.
Security exposure Remains that of an unsupported operating system after the service is fixed. Moving to a supported release reduces the unsupported-OS exposure, subject to that release’s current lifecycle.

Before migrating, list the applications and games you actually use, verify that their installers or stores support the target Windows release, and copy saves from both standard and cloud-synchronized locations. Keep the old drive or a complete image available until the new installation has been tested.

Frequently asked questions

Can a standard Windows account fix 0xC80070422?

Usually not. Viewing service status may be allowed, but changing the Windows Update startup type or starting a stopped service generally requires administrator approval. Sign in with an administrator account or provide administrator credentials when Windows requests elevation.

Should I delete the SoftwareDistribution folder itself?

No. Stop Windows Update first and remove only the contents inside C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. Leaving the folder in place lets Windows recreate its temporary update data in the expected location.

Can this error by itself prove that my PC has a virus?

No. The Microsoft classification points to a disabled or non-running Windows Update service, not to a confirmed infection. Use your existing security software and its normal scanning guidance if you have broader warning signs, but do not treat this code alone as malware evidence.

Why should I avoid copying a Windows 10 command into Windows 8?

System-servicing commands, component versions, and supported repair procedures differ between Windows releases. A command that is valid on Windows 10 or 11 may be unsupported or ineffective on Windows 8.1, so use instructions that explicitly identify your installed version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if Windows Update works once but the code returns after every reboot?

That pattern indicates the service configuration or another local dependency is reverting or failing again. Recheck the startup type, administrator control, clock, connectivity, and cache reset, then preserve the exact message and consider migration because the operating system remains unsupported even when the service can be restarted.
