Windows 8 error 0x8007045D (sometimes displayed or searched as 08007045D) means Windows could not complete an input/output request. It is the Windows error ERROR_IO_DEVICE, not a diagnosis of one particular failed part. The cause may be a USB connection, cable, removable media, optical disc, destination drive, storage controller, driver, file system, or Windows installation media.

Protect readable files first, then isolate the operation and hardware path one variable at a time. Reconnect the device, bypass hubs, try another cable or computer, check the file system, and only then consider formatting or replacing a component. If the message appears during Windows 8 setup, remove nonessential hardware and verify or recreate the installer before changing partitions.

What does Windows 8 error 0x8007045D mean?

Microsoft defines Win32 error 1117, hexadecimal 0x45D, as “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.” The leading 0x8007 portion is how Windows commonly presents the failure in an application or setup operation. In practical terms, Windows sent a read or write request and did not receive a usable response.

The code does not identify whether the source or destination is at fault. A file copy can fail because the source flash drive has unreadable sectors, because the destination disk is failing, or because a loose cable interrupts the path. The same message during DVD burning points to different tests than the message during an upgrade.

Use the action that triggered the message as your first diagnostic clue:

Where it appeared Most useful first checks Common fault path
Copying or opening files Stop repeated writes, copy essential data, change port and cable, test another computer Removable media, cable, enclosure, source or destination drive, file system
USB flash drive, SD card or external drive Safely eject, reconnect directly, run drive-error checking Loose connection, unsafe removal, file-system damage or failing media
DVD or image burning Use another disc or brand, select a slower speed, check burner firmware Disc compatibility, defective media, burner, firmware or speed mismatch
Windows 8 installation or upgrade Remove external hardware, verify media, use a direct port, check the target disk Unreadable installer, USB device, target disk, controller or setup environment

What should I do before repairing the drive?

Data protection comes before repair. If the disk or card still opens, copy irreplaceable files to a separate, known-good location. Do not keep retrying a large write, repeatedly reconnecting a noisy drive, or launching repair commands against the only copy of important data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Write down exactly what failed: a particular file, a folder copy, a backup, DVD writing, removable-storage access, or Windows setup. Record which device was the source and which was the destination. This prevents you from “fixing” the wrong disk and makes it easier to see whether the error follows a component.

  • Have enough free space on the destination for the files you are rescuing.
  • If the device disconnects, becomes unusually slow, clicks, or disappears, stop nonessential testing and prioritize copying readable data.
  • Do not format a flash drive, memory card or external disk until its needed contents are backed up. Formatting removes the existing file-system contents.
  • During a clean Windows installation, do not delete partitions or use destructive DiskPart commands until the target disk is positively identified and backed up.

How do I isolate a USB drive, cable or port?

Change one physical variable at a time. The aim is to determine whether the error follows the removable device, the connection, or the computer.

  1. Use Windows’ Safely Remove Hardware command before disconnecting a flash drive or external disk. Reconnect it firmly.
  2. Plug the device directly into a different USB port on the computer. Avoid hubs, front-panel extensions and unpowered adapters for this test.
  3. If the device uses a detachable cable, try a known-good replacement USB data cable. A cable that only supplies power, or one with an intermittent connection, can produce an I/O failure.
  4. Retry a small, noncritical read. Do not begin with a large move or cut operation.
  5. Test the same device on another computer. If possible, test a known-good USB flash drive in the original port.
  6. Compare the results. If several unrelated devices fail on one port or controller, investigate that computer-side path. If only one drive fails on multiple computers and ports, stop trusting that drive.

A known-good USB flash drive is a useful diagnostic and, when necessary, replacement item for this branch. Do not infer that the computer’s internal disk is defective merely because one removable device fails.

How do I check and repair the file system safely?

Windows 8 includes graphical drive-error checking and the elevated chkdsk command. These tools can correct logical file-system problems, but a repair can make data in already-bad sectors unavailable. Back up first whenever the disk is readable.

Use the graphical error-checking tool

  1. Open Computer (also called This PC in some Windows 8 updates).
  2. Right-click the affected drive and choose Properties.
  3. Open the Tools tab.
  4. Under Error-checking, select Check, then follow the prompts.
  5. Restart if Windows says the volume must be checked before it can be locked.

Run CHKDSK from an elevated Command Prompt

  1. Move the pointer to the lower-left corner, right-click the Start button, and choose Command Prompt (Admin). On systems without that shortcut, search for cmd, right-click Command Prompt, and select Run as administrator.
  2. Identify the correct drive letter in File Explorer. Substitute that letter for X: below.
  3. Start with a logical check and correction: chkdsk X: /f.
  4. Let the command finish without interrupting it. If it reports that the volume is in use, schedule the check for the next restart and reboot when ready.
  5. Use chkdsk X: /r only when a deeper bad-sector scan is justified, and only after backup. The /r option includes file-system correction and attempts to recover readable information from bad sectors; it can take a long time and may make data on damaged sectors unavailable.

If CHKDSK reports repeated bad sectors, unreadable records or cannot complete, treat the result as evidence that the storage path is unreliable. Do not use a successful scan as proof that a physically failing drive is healthy; intermittent cable, enclosure and controller faults can remain.

What if the error follows a USB flash drive, SD card or external disk?

SanDisk identifies unsafe removal, file-system problems, bad or loose USB connections, and a drive with errors or failure as causes of this message on removable storage. Work through the non-destructive checks before formatting.

When the device still opens

Copy the most important folders first to a different disk. Then safely eject and reconnect the device, try another direct port and test a different cable if it has one. Run the graphical check or chkdsk /f against the correct drive letter.

When the device is detected but cannot be read

Try another computer and, if available, a different operating system that can read the file system. Avoid initializing or formatting the disk while you are still trying to recover files. If the data is irreplaceable and the device repeatedly disconnects, professional recovery may be safer than repeated consumer repair attempts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When formatting is the only remaining test

Formatting is appropriate only after you have backed up the contents or accepted that they are no longer needed. In File Explorer, right-click the drive, choose Format, select a file system suitable for the devices that must use it, and confirm only after checking the drive letter and volume label. If the freshly formatted device produces 0x8007045D on multiple computers, replace it rather than relying on it for backups.

How do I fix 0x8007045D during DVD or CD burning?

When the failure occurs while writing an image or other data to an optical disc, the disc and burner must support the selected media type and speed. A Microsoft Support Engineer lists incompatible disc brands, defective discs, a malfunctioning burner, outdated firmware, and unsupported write speeds as possible causes.

  1. Cancel the failed session and inspect the disc for scratches, contamination or a damaged surface.
  2. Try a new blank disc from a different package or brand. Do not keep sacrificing discs from a suspect spindle.
  3. Choose a slower recording speed in the burning application instead of the maximum advertised speed.
  4. Confirm that the burner supports the disc type, capacity and format you selected.
  5. Check the computer or drive manufacturer’s documentation for firmware updates. Apply firmware only for the exact model and follow its recovery instructions.
  6. Test another burning application or another computer drive with the same image. If one burner fails with multiple known-good discs while another succeeds, the original burner is the likely replacement candidate.

Do not use a successful burn on one disc as evidence that every disc or speed combination will work. Optical media compatibility is a property of the particular burner, firmware, disc formulation and selected speed.

How do I fix 0x8007045D while installing or upgrading Windows 8?

Windows setup can report the error when it cannot reliably read installation media, write to the target disk, or communicate with another storage device. Start by simplifying the setup environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare the computer

  1. Shut down and disconnect nonessential external hardware: additional USB drives, card readers, printers, cameras and external storage. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display and the intended installation media.
  2. For a clean install, disconnect unrelated internal storage temporarily if that can be done safely. This makes the target disk unambiguous and prevents setup from placing boot files on the wrong drive.
  3. Enter Windows 8 Device Manager by right-clicking the lower-left corner, choosing Device Manager, and looking for warning icons under disk drives, storage controllers and USB controllers. Resolve a clearly identified device error before retrying setup.
  4. Perform a clean restart. Close applications, disable nonessential startup utilities, restart, and begin setup again without launching other programs.

Validate or recreate the installation media

  1. Verify that the Windows 8 ISO or download completed correctly and came from a trusted source. A damaged source can fail at the same file repeatedly.
  2. Recreate the installer on a different, known-good USB flash drive rather than reusing media that generated the error.
  3. Use a direct USB port on the computer; do not route the installer through a hub or extension.
  4. If an in-place upgrade is failing from a USB device, mount a verified ISO on the internal disk and run setup.exe from that mounted image. This isolates the installer from an unreliable removable connection.

Check Windows system files and the target disk

Microsoft installation guidance includes checking the disk with chkdsk /f and repairing the component store with Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM). From an elevated Command Prompt in the existing Windows installation, run:

chkdsk C: /f

Use the actual Windows volume letter if it is not C:. Then run:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Restart after DISM completes and retry setup. If setup still fails while reading the installer, recreate the media before assuming the internal disk is bad. If it fails while writing to one target disk but succeeds on another verified target, back up the original disk and investigate or replace it.

Do not erase the target prematurely

Disk deletion, repartitioning and formatting can destroy personal files and recovery partitions. Confirm the disk model, capacity and intended target in setup before making any destructive change. The error code alone does not justify wiping a disk.

How can I tell whether the drive, cable, enclosure or controller is bad?

Use a follow-the-failure test rather than guessing from the code.

Test result Most likely interpretation Next action
A different cable makes the error disappear The original cable or its connector is unreliable Retire the cable and retest the drive before trusting it
The same drive fails through several ports and computers The removable media, enclosure or drive is unreliable Back up readable data and replace the failing item
Several devices fail on one port or computer, but work elsewhere Port, controller, power delivery or driver problem Use another port temporarily and investigate the computer-side hardware or driver
Only one optical disc brand or speed fails Media compatibility or write-speed mismatch Use supported media, a slower speed or updated firmware
Setup fails only with one USB installer Installer media or its USB path is suspect Verify the image and recreate it on known-good media

Replace a cable when changing it consistently removes the error. Replace removable media when the failure follows that device across ports and computers. Replace an internal or external drive only after backing up readable data and confirming that the enclosure, cable, port and controller are not the cause.

When should I stop troubleshooting and seek data recovery?

Stop ordinary repair attempts when the disk repeatedly disconnects, produces mechanical noises, becomes extremely slow, or makes previously readable files unreadable. Every additional write or repair pass can reduce the chance of recovering data from a deteriorating device.

If the files are replaceable, retire the device after copying what you can and restore from a separate backup. If the files are unique, power the device down after a safe copy attempt and consult a qualified recovery service. Do not format, initialize or repeatedly run surface scans on the only copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a Windows update or driver be the cause?

Yes. If unrelated devices fail through the same storage controller or USB path, a controller driver, chipset issue or hardware fault is more plausible than simultaneous media failure. In Device Manager, inspect the relevant controller for warning icons, review its properties and note any reported error code before changing drivers.

Install drivers only from the computer, motherboard or device manufacturer’s official support channel, and create a restore point or backup before replacing a working driver. If the problem began immediately after a driver change, use Device Manager’s Roll Back Driver option when available. A driver change cannot repair a physically damaged disk or cable, so repeat the port-and-device isolation tests afterward.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for common Windows issues, adjust selected system settings, clean temporary and cache files, and log application crashes on Windows 8. It includes a free trial by category of at least two days before a paid subscription; results vary, it does not repair every crash, and it complements rather than replaces antivirus protection.

What should I do if the error returns after a successful repair?

Keep the repaired or newly replaced component under observation with noncritical files first. Recheck the exact operation, port, cable and destination whenever the message returns. A recurring error after a format or CHKDSK correction is a reason to distrust the storage path, not proof that the underlying hardware is permanently fixed.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Maintain at least one separate backup and safely eject removable media. For installation media, keep a verified ISO and a second known-good USB device available so a single failed installer does not block Windows setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 0x8007045D the same as a hard-drive failure?

No. It reports a failed I/O request, which can originate in a cable, port, enclosure, removable medium, optical disc, controller, driver or file system. Confirm that the error follows the drive across known-good connections before replacing the disk.

Can I fix 0x8007045D without formatting my USB drive?

Often you can. Back up readable files, reconnect directly, try another cable or computer, safely eject the device and run drive-error checking first. Formatting should be a last-resort test because it removes the existing file-system contents.

Why does slowing DVD write speed help?

Some burners and discs do not reliably support the selected maximum speed, even when the speed is listed on the packaging. A slower setting reduces the compatibility problem; using another disc brand and checking burner firmware tests the other common causes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I disconnect other drives during a Windows 8 clean install?

Disconnecting unrelated storage makes the intended target and installer easier for setup to identify and reduces the chance of boot files being written to another disk. Do this only after backing up and confirming which drive contains your important data.
