If Windows 8 shows 0x8007045D, it usually means an input/output (I/O) device error: Windows could not finish reading or writing data. The text 0x800704sd is probably a transcription error because s is not a hexadecimal digit, but verify the complete code in the original dialog, Windows Update history, or setup screen first. The failure can involve the internal drive, an installation USB, an external disk, a cable, a port, an enclosure, a storage controller, or the file system. Back up readable files, disconnect nonessential hardware, then choose the troubleshooting branch that matches where the error occurred. Connection and media swaps are the safest first tests; disk repair, formatting, partition changes, and drive replacement carry greater data-loss risk.

What does Windows error 0x8007045D mean?

0x8007045D is a generic I/O error. Windows started a read or write request but could not complete it, so the code identifies a failed data path rather than a particular part. The active path may include the system hard drive or SSD, a USB flash drive used for setup, an external drive, a cable, a USB port, an enclosure, a storage controller, or file-system metadata.

The operation and the device involved are more useful clues than the number itself. An error during a Windows 8.1 upgrade points you toward the system disk, drivers, background software, or a connected peripheral. An error while booting setup points toward installation media, its USB connection, or the target disk. An error during an ordinary update may involve corrupted update files or a storage problem that appears only when Windows writes them.

If the dialog really contains 0x800704sd, do not assume the final character is a letter. Copy the code exactly from the source before applying a code-specific procedure; a different code can require a different fix.

What should I do before trying a repair?

  1. Record the evidence. Write down the full code, the wording around it, what Windows was doing, and which drive or removable device was active. Note whether the failure is repeatable at the same percentage or file.
  2. Back up readable data. Copy important files to a separate, known-good destination before running disk repair, formatting media, changing partitions, or replacing hardware. Microsoft support warns that repairing bad sectors can cause data loss.
  3. Stop unnecessary writes. If a drive is making unusual noises, disappearing, or producing repeated I/O errors, avoid retries that write to it. Preserve the original media until you have copied what you can or obtained qualified storage advice.
  4. Disconnect nonessential equipment. For an upgrade or installation, remove external storage, USB hubs, docks, printers, card readers, and other peripherals. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection if needed, and the installation device.

Which troubleshooting path matches the failure stage?

Use the stage table to start with the least destructive test. The same code can require a different response depending on the active device.

Where it fails Likely active path Start with Reversibility and risk
Windows Update download or install Update cache, system files, system disk, or a driver Capture the code in Update history, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, then repair the update cache and system files Mostly reversible; system-file repair changes Windows components
Windows 8 to 8.1 upgrade System disk, hardware driver, background software, or connected peripheral Disconnect hardware, install important driver updates, use a clean boot, then check the implicated disk Low risk until disk repair; back up before CHKDSK
Windows setup or installation Installer USB, USB port, media image, target disk, or cable Recreate media from a trusted Microsoft source and test a known-good USB drive in a direct port Media replacement is low risk to the PC but erases the USB during recreation
Copying files or accessing a drive Drive, cable, enclosure, port, controller, or file system Change one connection or device at a time and copy critical data first Connection swaps are low risk; repair and formatting can lose data

How do I fix 0x8007045D during a Windows 8 or 8.1 upgrade?

Apply these steps in order. Retry the upgrade after each major change so you know which condition affected the result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Remove hardware that the upgrade does not need

Shut down, unplug external hard drives, USB sticks other than the installer, hubs, docks, printers, scanners, cameras, and memory-card readers, then start the upgrade again. A marginal peripheral or hub can interrupt a read or write even when the internal disk is healthy. Microsoft’s upgrade guidance specifically says to “Unplug any nonessential hardware devices.”

2. Install important Windows and hardware-driver updates

From the existing Windows installation, apply pending important updates. Open Device Manager and look for warning icons under disk drives, storage controllers, USB controllers, chipset devices, and display adapters. Obtain current drivers from the computer or component manufacturer, restart, and retry. If a driver update introduces a new fault, use Device Manager’s driver rollback option or reinstall the previous known-good package.

3. Temporarily remove upgrade conflicts

Uninstall non-Microsoft antivirus and other nonessential system utilities for the duration of the upgrade, following each product’s own removal instructions. Keep installers or license information so you can reinstall afterward. Do not run multiple cleanup, encryption, virtual-drive, or hardware-monitoring utilities while setup is changing system files.

4. Perform a clean boot

A clean boot starts Windows with Microsoft services and a minimal set of startup programs. Press Windows key + R, enter msconfig, and open System Configuration. On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, choose Disable all, then open the Startup tab and use Open Task Manager to disable nonessential startup items. Restart and run the upgrade. Afterward, return to System Configuration and re-enable services and startup items in groups so a conflicting program can be identified.

The pop-up button and built-in cable design offer convenience and portability. For desktop PCs, connecting to a rear USB port is recommended for optimal power and performance.

5. Check the disk only after backing up

Open an elevated Command Prompt: press the Start key, type cmd, right-click Command Prompt, and choose Run as administrator. Run:

chkdsk <drive>: /f

Replace <drive> with the affected volume letter, such as C. If Windows says the volume is in use, approve the check at the next restart and reboot. The /f option repairs file-system errors; it does not prove that a failing physical drive is healthy. Do not interrupt the check, and do not run it before securing important files.

6. Retry with a simple configuration

Leave only the required display, keyboard, mouse, network connection, and upgrade media connected. If the upgrade succeeds, reconnect peripherals one at a time and restore startup software in groups. If it fails again at the same point, record the stage and any changed device rather than repeatedly launching setup.

How do I fix the error when Windows setup or installation media is involved?

Recreate the installer

Use a trusted Microsoft installation source to create fresh Windows media. The creation process may format the USB drive, so copy off any files you need first. A newly written image avoids a damaged download or incomplete media session, but it cannot repair a failing internal disk.

Test another USB drive and a direct port

Try a known-good flash drive and plug it directly into a different USB port on the computer, not through a hub, dock, or extension. If the computer has ports on both sides or front and rear, test a port connected to a different controller. Disconnect every other removable device while setup runs.

Separate media failure from target-disk failure

If fresh media fails on one USB drive but works from another computer or another flash drive, suspect the original media, port, or enclosure. If multiple known-good media devices fail at the same point on the same computer, the target disk, its cable, controller, or firmware becomes more likely. A USB swap is an isolation test, not evidence that the internal disk is healthy.

Protect existing partitions and files

Do not format or delete partitions simply because setup reports an I/O error. First confirm that backups open on another computer. Partition changes and formatting can make recovery harder, especially when a disk is already returning read errors.

How do I fix 0x8007045D during normal Windows Update?

Capture the exact code in Update history

Open Control Panel, choose System and Security, then Windows Update and View update history. Open the failed entry and record the complete error code, update identifier, and date. This distinguishes a genuine 0x8007045D event from a transcription or secondary error.

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

In Windows 8, open Control Panel > Troubleshooting > Fix problems with Windows Update and let it apply the suggested repairs. Restart even if the troubleshooter reports that no changes were required, then retry the update once.

Clear the Windows Update cache

From an elevated Command Prompt, stop the update services:

net stop wuauserv
net stop bits

Rename the cache folder rather than deleting it so it can be restored if necessary:

rename C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

Restart the services:

net start bits
net start wuauserv

Windows will create a new cache. Reboot and check for updates again. If a corporate or school computer manages Windows Update, its administrator may need to approve this change.

Repair the component store and protected files

In the same elevated Command Prompt, run the Microsoft-documented servicing and file-integrity checks:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow

Allow each command to finish. DISM can take time and may appear to pause; do not close the window. Restart after both commands and retry the update. If either command reports that it could not repair files, save the exact result before escalating.

Check storage and drivers if the update still fails

Disconnect external storage, inspect Device Manager for warnings, and check the system volume only after backing up. An update that consistently fails while writing to the same disk can indicate a physical or file-system problem rather than a damaged download.

How can I isolate a bad drive, cable, port, or enclosure?

Change one variable at a time and keep a written record. For an external drive, use a different cable, then a different direct USB port, then a different enclosure or computer. For an internal SATA device, a qualified technician can test another data or power cable and controller port; do not open a powered system or disconnect components if you are not comfortable working inside it.

Observe whether the error follows the device or stays with the original port and cable. A device that fails on several known-good connections is more concerning than one that fails only through a single hub. A port that rejects multiple healthy devices may need motherboard or controller service.

Copy files in small groups and stop when read errors multiply. Do not use formatting as a diagnostic shortcut. If data is irreplaceable and the drive is degrading, professional storage diagnostics or data-recovery assistance is safer than repeated repair attempts.

What do the test results tell me?

Result Most useful interpretation Next action
Fresh installer works from a different USB drive Original media, its image, or its connection was implicated Retire or recreate the suspect media; continue monitoring the target disk
The same USB fails only through one hub or port Connection or controller path is implicated Use a direct known-good port and have the failing port serviced
CHKDSK reports file-system corrections and the upgrade succeeds Logical file-system damage contributed Keep backups and watch for recurring errors; corrections do not certify the hardware
Several media and ports fail on the same computer Target disk, storage controller, firmware, or board path is more likely Stop repeated writes and arrange qualified diagnostics
The error follows one external drive across computers That drive, enclosure, or its cable is implicated Prioritize data copying and replacement or recovery advice

When should I stop troubleshooting and seek hardware help?

Escalate when the error follows one drive, cable, enclosure, or port across controlled tests; when the device repeatedly disappears; when reads become extremely slow; or when important files cannot be copied. The code alone does not prove that a drive must be replaced, but recurring evidence on the same physical path justifies qualified storage diagnostics.

Tell the technician the exact code, operation, device, tests performed, and whether the drive contains the only copy of important data. Avoid initializing, formatting, or repeatedly repairing a disk that may need recovery. If the computer is under warranty, use the manufacturer’s service channel before opening the chassis.

How can I reduce the chance of another I/O error?

  • Keep at least one current backup that you have successfully opened.
  • Use direct USB connections for installation media and avoid loose cables, overloaded hubs, and damaged enclosures.
  • Install important Windows updates and manufacturer drivers before a major upgrade.
  • Remove nonessential peripherals and background utilities during setup.
  • Record the first occurrence and the device involved; a pattern is valuable evidence if the problem returns.

As an optional shortcut after trying the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for common Windows problems, clean temporary and cache files, review settings and vulnerabilities, and record app crashes. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; its free trial is available by category for at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, and results vary—no utility repairs every crash.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a loose USB connection really produce 0x8007045D?

Yes. A brief interruption while Windows is reading installer files or writing an update can surface as the same generic I/O code. Testing a direct port and a different cable helps distinguish a connection problem from media or disk damage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the error appear only when copying large files?

Long transfers keep the storage path busy and can expose marginal cables, overheating enclosures, weak power delivery, or unreadable sectors that short operations never touch. Copy the most important files first and stop if errors or repeated disconnects increase.

Should I format the USB drive before recreating Windows media?

The official media-creation process normally prepares the drive and may erase it, so back up its contents first. Manual formatting is not a cure for an unreliable flash drive and can destroy evidence or files you still need.

What information should I give a repair technician?

Provide the exact code as displayed, the operation that failed, the drive or USB device involved, and the results of each cable, port, media, and computer swap. Also state whether you have a verified backup and whether the device is making unusual noises or disappearing.
