If Windows 8 shows 0x800745D, first verify every character. That exact string is not established in Microsoft’s documented system-error list and is often a transcription of 0x8007045D. The documented value means “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.” It describes a failed read or write, not proof that one particular disk has failed. Protect important files, record what operation triggered the message, disconnect unnecessary hardware, and then follow the branch for setup, Windows Update, or copying and backup. Do not format, reinstall, or repeatedly write to a suspect drive until data you need has been copied or recovery options considered.
What does Windows 8 error 0x800745D mean?
The first issue is identification. 0x800745D and 0x8007045D are different hexadecimal strings. Microsoft documents 0x8007045D as ERROR_IO_DEVICE, with the message “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.” If the dialog, Update history entry, setup log, or screenshot really says 0x800745D, do not silently replace it with the documented value; preserve the exact text when searching or asking for help.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAn I/O error means that a requested read or write did not complete somewhere in the path between Windows and the data. The path can include a hard disk or SSD, USB flash drive, memory card, optical media, cable, port, hub, enclosure, controller, driver, background software, or a damaged file. The code alone cannot identify which part is responsible.
How do I verify the code before trying a fix?
Copy the message character by character. A missing zero, an extra digit, or a different letter changes the diagnosis and can send you to the wrong repair procedure.

- Capture the complete sentence, not only the hexadecimal value.
- Note whether the message appeared during Windows 8 setup, an upgrade, Windows Update, file copying, backup, restore, or another task.
- Write down the drive letter, device name, file name, update number or KB number, and the percentage or file at which the operation stopped.
- Check Windows Update history if the message came from updating, and keep the original dialog or setup log if it came from installation.
These details determine whether you need to isolate a physical data path or repair Windows servicing components. A code copied from a secondary source should not override the value shown by your own computer.
What should I do first to protect my files?
Data protection comes before repeated repairs. If the failed operation involved a drive, USB stick, memory card, backup target, or irreplaceable file, copy every file that still opens to a different, known-good location. A second physical device is preferable to another folder on the same suspect disk.
- Stop unnecessary writes. Do not format the device, initialize it, run a destructive “repair,” or reinstall Windows over the affected volume while important files remain there.
- Make a short inventory. Record which folders open, which files fail, and whether the device disconnects or becomes unusually slow.
- Save the context. Photograph the dialog or copy the exact log entry, including the code and operation.
- Shut down cleanly if the device is unstable. Repeated disconnects, clicking sounds, or a volume that disappears are reasons to limit testing rather than keep retrying.
A backup made before troubleshooting gives you room to test cables, ports, and software without turning a recoverable problem into data loss.
How can I isolate a cable, port, hub, or device problem?
Change one variable at a time and repeat the same small operation. This is a diagnostic comparison, not proof that a particular component has failed.
- Disconnect nonessential USB devices, hubs, docks, card readers, phones, and external drives.
- Reconnect only the keyboard, display, network connection, installation media if required, and target drive.
- Move the device to a direct port on the computer instead of a hub or dock.
- Try a known-good cable of the correct type.
- Test the same device on another computer, if doing so will not risk the data.
- Try a different destination when copying or restoring a file.
- Repeat with a small, replaceable file before attempting a large transfer.
| Observation | What it suggests | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| The error disappears with a different port or cable | The original connection path may be unreliable. | Keep the working direct connection and replace or avoid the suspect cable, hub, or port. |
| The error follows the device to another port and computer | The device, its enclosure, or its media is more suspect than the original computer. | Finish copying accessible data and stop repeated writes. |
| Only one file fails while other files copy | The file or a particular area of the source may be damaged. | Copy unaffected files first and preserve the failing file for recovery attempts. |
| Several drives fail only on one computer | The computer’s port, controller, driver, or operating system may be involved. | Use a direct port, remove background hardware, and continue with the applicable software branch. |
| The drive disconnects during every test | Continuing can worsen a hardware or power problem. | Stop testing and consider professional data-recovery advice before formatting or reinstalling. |
Do not treat any single pattern as conclusive. A cable can work with one device and fail with another, and a device can appear healthy during a small transfer while failing under a longer read.

How do I fix the error during Windows 8 setup or an upgrade?
When setup is the trigger, reduce interference and verify the installation path before changing the existing Windows installation.

1. Remove external hardware
Unplug nonessential USB storage, hubs, docks, card readers, printers, phones, and other accessories. Leave only the devices required to see the display, enter input, connect to the network when needed, read the installation media, and reach the target drive.
2. Update applicable drivers
Use the computer or component manufacturer’s supported Windows 8 driver packages where available, especially for storage controllers and other hardware involved in setup. A driver update is relevant only if the device and Windows edition support that package.
3. Remove interfering software temporarily
Microsoft’s upgrade guidance advises removing non-Microsoft antivirus and other nonessential software that can interfere with installation. Record what you remove so it can be reinstalled after setup completes, and do not leave the computer unprotected while browsing or downloading during the process.
4. Perform a clean restart
Background programs can hold files or devices open. Restart Windows with only essential services and startup items, then run setup again. If the error returns at the same file or percentage, that repeatability is useful evidence rather than a reason to keep clicking Retry indefinitely.

5. Compare the media and target path
Use installation media known to be complete and readable, and test the target drive’s connection with a direct port or a known-good cable where applicable. If the failure follows the media or target drive, preserve the existing installation and personal files before considering a replacement. A new USB stick or drive may help isolate the fault, but it is not a guaranteed fix.
6. Treat a clean install as destructive
A clean installation can erase the target volume. Confirm that your backup opens on another device, identify the correct partition, and understand which files will be removed before proceeding. If the disk repeatedly produces I/O errors, do not use installation as a way to “repair” it.
How do I fix the error when it appears in Windows Update?
Use this branch only when the message came from Windows Update. An I/O error during a backup or file copy needs the hardware and data-protection workflow instead.
- Confirm the update context. Open Windows Update history and record the failed update or KB number and the exact code.
- Check basic conditions. Connect reliable power, verify a stable network connection, sign in with an administrator account, and disconnect unneeded external hardware.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter. Allow it to detect and correct supported update-service problems, then restart and retry once.
- Clear the Windows Update cache using Microsoft’s documented procedure. The cache reset stops the update services, renames or clears the downloaded update store, restarts the services, and lets Windows obtain a fresh copy. Follow the procedure for your Windows 8 edition rather than deleting arbitrary folders.
- Repair component and system files from an elevated Command Prompt. Right-click Command Prompt, choose Run as administrator, and run the applicable servicing commands:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Wait for each command to finish, read its result, restart Windows, and retry the update. DISM repairs the component store used by servicing; System File Checker checks protected system files. These commands address Windows components, not a failing USB cable, external disk, or damaged backup destination.

What should I do if the error occurs while copying, backing up, or restoring?
A confirmed 0x8007045D during a file operation indicates that a read or write request could not complete. Work from the least risky test to the most informative one.
- Copy accessible files from the source to a different destination before experimenting.
- Use a direct port and remove hubs, docks, and adapters.
- Replace the cable with one known to work with the same type of device.
- Try the device on another computer, using a small test file first.
- Try another destination drive if the source reads correctly but the backup target fails.
- Check whether the failure is tied to one file, one folder, a particular size, or the entire device.
If the error follows the source drive across ports and computers, or important files become unreadable, stop before formatting, repartitioning, or reinstalling. A professional data-recovery service may be appropriate; outcomes depend on the condition of the media and are not guaranteed.
How do I tell a Windows software problem from a failing device?
Compare the failed operation, the device path, and whether the problem follows the device or the computer. The following guide keeps software servicing separate from hardware isolation.

When should I stop troubleshooting and seek help?
Stop DIY repair when the cost of another attempt could exceed the value of the data. Escalate if any of these conditions apply:
- Important files are unreadable or cannot be copied to a second device.
- The same internal or external volume repeatedly disconnects.
- The device makes unusual mechanical sounds or becomes abnormally hot.
- The error follows the device across ports and computers.
- Hardware-health monitoring reports warnings.
- You are considering formatting, partitioning, or reinstalling without a verified backup.
Keep the original device unchanged for a recovery specialist, document every test already performed, and provide the exact code and symptoms. Do not promise yourself that a utility, replacement cable, or reinstall will recover files that the hardware can no longer read.

How can I prevent another Windows 8 I/O error?
- Use a safe-eject command before removing external storage.
- Avoid routing important transfers through loosely connected hubs or damaged cables.
- Maintain backups on a separate device and periodically open a sample of backed-up files.
- Keep Windows 8, storage-controller drivers, and device firmware within the versions supported by the hardware manufacturer.
- Keep a record of drive letters and backup destinations so an error is not misdiagnosed as an update failure.
- Replace unreliable media instead of repeatedly retrying writes to it.

It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every I/O or hardware failure. It runs on Windows 8, with a free trial by category for at least two days before a subscription.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I safely ignore the difference between 0x800745D and 0x8007045D?
No. They are different strings, and only 0x8007045D is identified in Microsoft’s system-error documentation as ERROR_IO_DEVICE. Recheck the original dialog or log before applying an I/O-specific procedure.
Will running CHKDSK fix this Windows 8 error?
Not necessarily. A disk check may add stress to a deteriorating device and does not correct a bad cable, port, enclosure, controller, or unreadable hardware. Protect important files first and use a disk check only when the data is backed up and the drive remains stable.
Why does the error appear only when I use a USB hub?
A hub can introduce power, bandwidth, cable, or connection problems that do not occur through a direct port. Test the same device directly on the computer with a known-good cable; if that works consistently, avoid the hub for important transfers.
Can Windows Update repairs fix an error during a backup?
Usually not. DISM, SFC, and the Windows Update cache procedure repair Windows servicing components, while a backup failure requires testing the source, destination, cable, port, and enclosure. Use the branch that matches the operation that actually failed.
