“Windows cannot be installed” is not one error with one cure. First note the complete message or code and whether you started Setup inside an existing Windows session or booted from USB/DVD. An in-place upgrade is usually blocked by software, drivers, updates, connectivity or free space; a clean installation can fail because the computer did not boot the media, the disk’s GPT/MBR style does not match the firmware mode, or the PC does not meet Windows 11 requirements. The steps below separate those paths, protect your data before destructive commands and then address the most common codes, including “Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is not of the GPT partition style” and “We couldn’t complete the updates. Undoing changes.”

What does “Windows cannot be installed” mean?

Windows Setup uses similar wording for several different operations. A failed update, an in-place upgrade, a clean installation from bootable media and a target-disk rejection have different causes and different safe fixes. Treat the exact wording and code as the starting point rather than assuming the disk must be wiped.

Capture the failure before changing anything

  • Write down the full message, including every character in an error code such as 0xC1900101 or 0x80070070.
  • Record whether Setup was launched from a working Windows desktop or after booting from installation media.
  • Note which edition you are installing and whether the target computer is intended for Windows 10 or Windows 11.
  • Photograph the screen if the message appears only briefly. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance uses the specific code to choose among several possible fixes.

Is this an upgrade or a clean installation?

An upgrade starts from an existing Windows session and attempts to preserve the installation. A clean install starts from USB/DVD and can remove the existing system, applications and personal data. Choosing the wrong path is a common reason people erase a working installation while trying to repair an update.

Setup mode How it starts What normally remains Typical failure clues
In-place upgrade or major update Run Setup while the current Windows desktop is working Existing Windows environment, apps and files are intended to remain, subject to the selected options Incompatible application or driver, damaged or incomplete update files, interrupted setup, network/VPN access, pending cleanup or insufficient space
Clean installation Boot the computer from Windows installation media Nothing on a partition that you delete or format; personal files, apps, manufacturer customizations and settings are removed USB is not booted, firmware mode and partition style conflict, unsupported disk operation or Windows 11 hardware ineligibility

What should I do before attempting another installation?

Back up files you cannot replace before creating media or changing partitions. Microsoft warns that creating installation media deletes the USB drive’s contents, and a clean installation can delete the target computer’s data. If the computer has more than one internal drive, identify each drive by its capacity and contents; selecting the wrong disk in Setup or DiskPart can destroy a different installation.

  • Confirm that the installation media matches the intended Windows edition and architecture.

How do I fix an in-place upgrade that fails from the Windows desktop?

Use these non-destructive checks when the existing Windows installation still starts. Apply the steps that match the displayed code; an error table describes possibilities, not a guarantee that every listed cause is present.

  1. Disconnect nonessential hardware. Shut down, remove external storage, printers, hubs and other peripherals, then retry with only the keyboard, mouse and display. A driver for a disconnected device can still be involved, so continue to the driver step if the code points there.
  2. Install pending Windows and driver updates. Restart after updates finish and check again for additional updates. Outdated or incompatible drivers are a frequent upgrade blocker, particularly when the code begins with 0xC1900101.
  3. Remove incompatible or nonessential applications. Uninstall software that Setup identifies as incompatible. If a non-Microsoft antivirus product is interfering, temporarily remove it according to its vendor’s instructions, then reinstall or re-enable protection after Windows is working. Do not leave the computer unprotected longer than necessary.
  4. Free space on the system drive. Remove or move files you have already backed up and empty temporary locations. The 0x80070070 family is associated with insufficient free space; the exact amount required depends on the edition, update and existing installation.
  5. Check connectivity. Disconnect from a VPN and use a stable network connection while Setup downloads or validates files. Microsoft associates 0x800F0922 with possible connectivity or VPN problems as well as insufficient space in the System Reserved partition, so do not resize that partition without first examining the disk layout and understanding the data-loss risk.
  6. Retry after a normal restart. A pending reboot, interrupted cleanup operation or partially downloaded update can prevent another attempt. If the same code returns, stop repeating the installation and follow the code-specific branch below.

What do common upgrade codes indicate?

Code or message What Microsoft says it could indicate Practical next check
0xC1900208 – 0x4000C An incompatible application is blocking the upgrade. Review Setup’s compatibility report and remove the named or otherwise nonessential application before retrying.
0xC1900101 and cited variants A driver problem; peripherals can contribute. Update drivers, disconnect everything beyond the keyboard, mouse and display, and retry.
0x80070070 variants Insufficient free space. Free space on the Windows system drive and remove temporary installation files left by a failed attempt.
0x800F0922 Connectivity or VPN access problems, or too little room in the System Reserved partition. Retry without a VPN on a stable connection. Inspect the partition arrangement before considering any resize.
0x80300024 The requested disk operation is unsupported by the selected disk, partition or volume. Verify the target disk and its partition layout. Do not delete partitions until you have confirmed which disk contains your backup and current Windows files.

How do I create Windows installation media safely?

Create the media on a working PC using Microsoft’s official Windows installation-media process. You need a blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB. The creation process deletes everything on that USB, so copy its contents elsewhere first. Back up the target PC before booting from the new media.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. On the working computer, download the appropriate official Windows media-creation tool.
  2. Insert the blank USB drive and select it when the tool asks where to create the media. Confirm its drive letter and capacity carefully if more than one removable drive is connected.
  3. Allow the tool to finish. Do not remove the USB while it is being written.
  4. Safely eject the USB, connect it to the target computer and shut the target computer down completely.

What if Windows Setup will not boot from the USB?

The boot-menu key and firmware screens vary by manufacturer. If the computer starts the old Windows installation instead of Setup, consult the computer or motherboard maker’s boot-menu instructions and choose the USB device, or change the boot order temporarily.

  1. Power on the target computer and open its one-time boot menu or firmware setup using the manufacturer’s documented key.
  2. Select the USB entry that corresponds to the installation media. Some systems show separate UEFI and legacy entries; choose the mode that matches the partition style you intend to use.
  3. If the USB is not listed, shut down and recreate the media on a different blank drive, check that the drive was written successfully and try another USB port. Avoid hubs during boot.
  4. When Setup appears, verify the language, time and keyboard choices before selecting installation. If the computer repeatedly returns to the internal drive, remove the USB after Setup has copied files and allow the normal restart to continue from the internal disk.

How do I fix “Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is not of the GPT partition style”?

This message usually means the firmware mode used to boot Setup does not match the target disk’s partition style. UEFI firmware is normally paired with GPT; legacy BIOS-compatibility mode is paired with MBR. The correct choice depends on the computer’s firmware capabilities, the existing installation and whether you need to preserve data.

Option 1: Boot Setup in a compatible legacy mode

If the computer is configured for legacy BIOS or compatibility support and you intend to retain the disk’s existing MBR style, reboot into the firmware settings and select the legacy/compatibility boot entry for the installation USB. This avoids converting the disk, but it also means the resulting installation uses the limitations of that firmware mode. Do not change modes casually when another operating system or recovery configuration depends on the current setting.

Option 2: Use UEFI with a GPT disk

For a modern UEFI installation, boot the USB in UEFI mode and use a GPT-formatted target. Deleting partitions and converting a disk during Setup erases the selected drive. Microsoft’s warning is explicit: “Reformatting will erase all the data on the drive.”

If you are deliberately performing a clean install and have verified the backup and disk identity, Setup can delete the target disk’s existing partitions and create new ones automatically. In a multi-drive computer, disconnecting other drives before this operation reduces the chance of selecting the wrong disk.

Can MBR2GPT preserve the existing installation?

Microsoft’s MBR2GPT utility can convert supported MBR system disks to GPT without the blanket data wipe associated with deleting partitions. It first validates prerequisites, and the firmware must be changed to boot in UEFI mode after conversion. It is not a universal conversion method: it applies to supported system disks, still requires a current backup and can leave the machine unbootable if firmware settings or disk conditions are wrong. Do not use it on a disk merely because the error mentions GPT; confirm that the disk is the intended Windows system disk and that the computer supports UEFI.

How do I handle “We couldn’t complete the updates. Undoing changes”?

Let Windows finish the rollback and restart before trying another change. The sentence describes Windows reversing an unsuccessful update; it does not identify whether the cause was a driver, application, damaged files, connectivity, an interruption or lack of space.

What if Windows 11 says this PC is not eligible?

Check hardware eligibility before recreating media or changing partitions. Microsoft’s listed minimums are requirements, not performance recommendations; meeting them does not make an otherwise unsupported configuration supported.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Requirement Microsoft minimum
Processor Compatible 64-bit processor, 1 GHz or faster, with two or more cores
Memory 4 GB RAM
Storage 64 GB or greater available storage
Firmware UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability
Security module TPM 2.0
Windows 11 Home first-use setup Internet access and a Microsoft account are required to complete initial setup

Check the firmware setup for TPM and Secure Boot settings only if the hardware supports them and you understand the current boot configuration. Enabling or disabling firmware security options can affect an existing installation, encryption or boot entries. If the processor or TPM requirement is not met, changing the partition style will not make the device eligible.

Is Windows 10 still a supported reinstall choice?

Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance or security fixes for Windows 10. If you are reinstalling Windows 10 in 2026, treat it as a lifecycle decision: confirm the current support position and plan a supported operating system rather than assuming a successful installation restores ongoing security coverage.

When should I stop troubleshooting and reassess the installation plan?

Stop and re-evaluate instead of repeatedly deleting partitions when the exact code has not been captured, the backup is incomplete, the selected disk is uncertain, or the machine may not meet Windows 11 requirements. A clean install is appropriate when you intentionally want a fresh system and have a verified backup; it is not a default remedy for every update failure. If Setup continues to fail after the path, firmware mode, disk style and hardware requirements all match, preserve the error details and consult the computer manufacturer’s documentation for model-specific firmware and storage limitations.

As an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address some common Windows errors, broken system elements, invalid redirects and shared-DLL problems, while also offering cleanup, settings adjustments and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 with a free trial by category of at least two days followed by a subscription; results vary, it does not repair every crash, and it complements rather than replaces antivirus software.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I create the installation USB on a different computer?

Yes. Microsoft’s process is designed for a working PC to create the media, after which you connect that USB to the computer that will be installed. The working PC is only the media-creation system; it does not need to be the same model as the target.

Can I reuse the USB after installing Windows?

Yes, but creating new installation media will erase the USB again. Copy any files you want to keep elsewhere before recreating or repurposing it.

Does MBR2GPT work on every MBR disk?

No. It is intended for supported MBR system disks and performs prerequisite validation before conversion. A backup is still necessary, and the computer must be switched to UEFI boot afterward.

What should I do if the rollback never reaches the Windows desktop?

Do not interrupt repeated power cycles while Windows is undoing changes. If it remains stuck, record the last displayed code, disconnect nonessential hardware and use the manufacturer’s recovery or support instructions rather than deleting partitions without a verified backup.
