If Windows says it cannot find updates, or reports that your PC is up to date when an update is missing, work through the fixes in order: run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter, restart, verify power, network, time, administrator access and storage, then clear the update cache. If that fails, reset Windows Update components from an elevated Command Prompt and repair the Windows image with DISM and System File Checker. The same symptom can be caused by a disabled service, damaged cached files, permissions, a faulty clock, low disk space, incompatible drivers or the end of Windows 10 support, so the error code and your Windows version determine the best branch.
Why does Windows say it cannot find updates?
Windows Update has two separate jobs: discovering applicable updates and downloading or installing them. A problem in either stage can produce similar wording. The most common causes are:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- The Windows Update service is stopped or its local database is not working.
- Cached update files in
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionare corrupt. - The PC has an unstable internet connection, incorrect date or time, or insufficient free space.
- The update requires administrator approval, but the account lacks the necessary rights.
- A security program, VPN, driver or other startup component interrupts an installation.
- An external device or dock conflicts with a version upgrade.
- The computer is running Windows 10 after its free Windows Update support deadline.
Use the least invasive checks first. Do not rename system folders or run repair commands until the automated troubleshooter and basic conditions have been checked.
How do I run the Windows Update troubleshooter?
Start with Microsoft’s automated troubleshooter, restart when it finishes, and then check for updates again. The menus differ between Windows 11 and Windows 10.

Windows 11
- Open the Get Help app and run the automated Windows Update troubleshooter.
- If you prefer Settings, open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update, choose Run, and follow the prompts.
- Restart the PC after the troubleshooter completes.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Windows 10
- Open Get Help, or open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update and choose Run the troubleshooter.
- Restart Windows when the process ends.
- Return to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check again.
The troubleshooter can repair common service and configuration problems without changing system files manually. If it reports that it could not identify a problem, continue with the checks below.
What basic conditions can prevent updates?
Before changing the update cache, make sure the computer can complete a download and installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Power: Plug in a laptop or other portable PC. Avoid starting a major update while battery power is low.
- Network: Confirm that Wi-Fi or Ethernet is connected, then reconnect if the connection has dropped. A timeout can leave an update incomplete.
- Administrator access: Use an administrator account or approve the elevation prompt when Windows requests it.
- Date and time: Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time on Windows 11, or Settings > Time & Language > Date & time on Windows 10. Turn on Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically, then select Sync now when that button is available.
- Free space: Check the system drive in File Explorer. Microsoft lists at least 16 GB for a 32-bit upgrade and 20 GB for a 64-bit upgrade. These are minimum upgrade figures, not a promise that every update will install with exactly that amount available. If the drive is nearly full, remove or move personal files and retry.
- External hardware: Shut down and unplug nonessential USB drives, docks, external storage, printers and similar devices. Reconnect them after the update succeeds.
Microsoft notes that a USB flash drive may be needed when a small system drive cannot provide enough room during an upgrade. It is an optional storage aid, not a replacement for keeping adequate free space on the Windows drive.
How do I clear the Windows Update cache?
A damaged download cache can prevent Windows from discovering or validating new packages. Clearing the contents of the cache forces Windows Update to build a fresh set of files.
- Press Win + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - Find Windows Update in the Services list, right-click it, and select Stop.
- Open File Explorer and go to
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. - Delete the contents of that folder. Do not delete the parent
SoftwareDistributionfolder itself. - Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and select Start.
- Restart the PC if Windows prompts you, then open Windows Update and select Check for updates.
If a file refuses to delete, confirm that the service is stopped and that you are using an administrator account. A refusal can also indicate that another update-related process is still active; restart Windows and repeat the procedure rather than deleting unrelated system files.

What does my Windows Update error code mean?
Write down the complete hexadecimal code shown in Windows Update. It points to a narrower cause and prevents you from applying a more invasive fix than necessary.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Error code | Microsoft’s listed indication | First response |
|---|---|---|
0x8007000d |
Update files or cache corruption | Run the troubleshooter, then clear the Windows Update cache. |
0x800705b4 |
The update took too long or was interrupted | Check connectivity, restart, and investigate interference from security software. |
0x80240034 |
Incomplete update or connection issue | Confirm that Windows Update is running and run the troubleshooter. |
0x800f0922 |
Insufficient space or another component issue | Free disk space; Microsoft also lists disabling a VPN for this code. |
0x80070057 or 0x80080005 |
Corruption, permissions or incorrect configuration | Run System File Checker and the troubleshooter. |
0xC1900101 |
Incompatible driver | Update or remove the implicated network or graphics driver and consider a clean boot. |
0x80248014 |
Update database problem or the service is not running | Start Windows Update and run the troubleshooter. |
0x80070005 |
Access denied or insufficient permissions | Use an administrator account and check security-software interference. |
0x80070002 |
Update failed to install | Restart, run the troubleshooter and check free space. |
The “first response” column is a starting point, not a guarantee. If the same code returns after the listed action, continue to the component reset and system-file repair sections.
How do I reset Windows Update components from Command Prompt?
Use this procedure only when the Settings-based fixes and cache cleanup have not solved the problem. It requires an administrator Command Prompt, and each command should be entered separately.
- Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter these commands one at a time, waiting for each command to finish:
net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
ren %systemroot%softwaredistribution softwaredistribution.bak
ren %systemroot%system32catroot2 catroot2.bak
net start bits
net start wuauserv
- Close Command Prompt and restart the PC.
- Open Windows Update and select Check for updates.
The commands stop Background Intelligent Transfer Service and Windows Update, rename their working folders, and start the services again. Renaming preserves the old folders as backups while Windows creates new working data. If a “service was not started” message appears for a stop command, continue with the remaining commands; a failure on a rename or start command needs to be corrected before retrying the update.
How do I repair Windows system files and the component store?
Damaged Windows components can make an update fail even after the cache is rebuilt. Microsoft documents repairing the Windows image with DISM and then checking protected system files with SFC.

- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run the image repair command and wait for it to complete:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until SFC verification reaches 100%, close the window, restart Windows and try Windows Update again.
Do not close the Command Prompt merely because progress pauses for a while. DISM and SFC can take time, and the final status is more useful than an intermediate percentage.
What if the disk itself has errors?
From an administrator Command Prompt, Microsoft also documents:
chkdsk /f C:
Windows may schedule the disk check for the next restart because the system drive is in use. Save open work before restarting and allow the check to finish.
When is a clean restart useful?
If update files are healthy but a startup application or service keeps interrupting installation, use a clean restart to isolate that conflict. After identifying the conflicting software, restore normal startup and update or remove the component that caused the interruption.
How do I fix a Windows version upgrade that is blocked?
Version upgrades have additional hardware and software checks. If the failure occurs during an upgrade rather than an ordinary monthly update, use this narrower checklist:

- Disconnect nonessential hardware, including USB storage, printers and docks.

- Temporarily uninstall a non-Microsoft antivirus product when appropriate, following its vendor’s removal instructions, and reinstall it after the upgrade.
- Remove outdated or nonessential software that may load during setup.
- Free additional space on the Windows drive.
- Retry after a clean restart if a startup service appears to be interfering.
These actions target upgrade blockers; they are not necessary for every ordinary quality update. Reconnect hardware and restore normal security protection after the upgrade has completed.
Is Windows 10 still receiving Windows Update support?
Microsoft says support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance or security fixes for Windows 10. If a Windows 10 PC reports that it is up to date after the deadline, another cache reset cannot create updates that are no longer supplied; plan a move to a supported Windows 11 installation when the hardware and edition allow it.
Before treating the lifecycle deadline as the cause, record the exact Windows version and error code and complete the basic checks. A service failure or corrupt cache can still affect a Windows 10 machine, but the support status determines whether a newer update should exist at all.
