If Windows shows 0x80070422, Windows Update is usually disabled or stopped. The title’s 0X800070422 contains an extra zero and is not Microsoft’s standard spelling, so first copy the code directly from the original Windows dialog, Settings page, event log, or update history. If the code is really 0x80070422, the primary fix is to open services.msc, set Windows Update to Automatic, start it when stopped, restart the PC, and check for updates again.

The same message can appear during an upgrade, installation, or Microsoft Store download. Those cases may need the Windows Update troubleshooter, a cache reset, or administrator help. A browser page can also display a fake Windows-style code; never call a phone number shown in a pop-up.

Use the least invasive option first: verify the identifier, inspect the service, and only then clear the update cache. This order preserves useful evidence and avoids changing unrelated Windows settings.

What does error 0x80070422 mean?

Microsoft documents 0x80070422 as a Windows Update service problem. Microsoft Learn describes it this way: “This issue occurs when the Windows Update service stops working or isn’t running.” The related Windows error identifier is ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED.

Hexadecimal letters are not case-sensitive, so 0x80070422 and 0X80070422 identify the same code. However, 0X800070422 has an additional zero and should not automatically be treated as the documented error. A different digit can point to a different failure, so verify the complete text before changing services or deleting update files.

That transcription step matters when you contact support. A support technician can search for the documented identifier 0x80070422, while an extra zero may lead to an entirely different diagnosis. Copy the complete message, not just the number: wording about a service, permissions, a download, or an installation phase can narrow the problem.

Where did the code appear, and is it really from Windows?

The location of the message determines which troubleshooting path is appropriate. Record the exact code and surrounding wording before closing the message. If possible, note the Windows version and whether the problem began during a normal update, an upgrade, or an app download.

  • Windows Update: Check Settings, update history, or the Windows Update dialog. This is the normal context for 0x80070422.
  • Upgrade or installation setup: Note whether the failure happened while downloading, preparing, or installing. The repair may require a component reset rather than only starting the service.
  • Microsoft Store: Establish whether every Store app fails or only one app. The Store can depend on several update-related services.
  • Services console: A startup error, permission message, or policy notice is useful evidence if Windows Update will not start.
  • Browser tab: A web page can print any text, including a convincing HRESULT. If it claims that a virus was found or demands a call, treat it as a scam warning rather than a Windows diagnostic.

A genuine Windows notification can be checked from Windows itself. Open Settings, update history, or Services manually rather than following a link supplied by an unexpected message. The same number has very different significance when it appears in a browser tab versus Windows’ own controls.

Before you change anything

Write down the complete identifier and the place where it appeared. If the error occurred during an upgrade, record the phase: downloading, preparing, or installing. If the Services console shows a warning, preserve the exact wording, including “access denied,” a policy notice, or a service that returns to Disabled.

You need an account allowed to change services and folders. On a personal computer, this normally means an administrator account or approval of the User Account Control prompt. On a work- or school-managed computer, a local administrator may not be permitted to override organizational policy. Do not begin with registry edits or an unofficial repair program; those changes can remove evidence and may conflict with management settings.

How do I fix 0x80070422 in Services?

This is the least invasive and most directly supported repair. You need an account permitted to change Windows services.

  1. Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Enter services.msc and select OK. Approve the User Account Control prompt if Windows asks.
  3. In the Services list, find Windows Update.
  4. Open its Properties.
  5. Set Startup type to Automatic.
  6. Check Service status. If it says Stopped, select Start.
  7. Select Apply, then OK.
  8. Restart the computer.
  9. After signing in, open Windows Update and select Check for updates. Install any offered updates and restart again if Windows requests it.

Check each control before closing the window. “Automatic” describes how Windows should start the service; it does not by itself start a service that is currently stopped. Conversely, a service that starts once but immediately stops needs further investigation. Note whether Windows reports a permission problem, refuses the startup-type change, or changes the setting back to Disabled.

If the service starts and updates install, no cache deletion or registry change is necessary. If the service immediately stops, refuses the setting, or produces a permission error, continue with the section that matches what you saw.

What should I do if the service fix does not work?

Use the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter before resetting cached files. Read its result carefully; running the troubleshooter does not prove that it repaired the service. If it reports that a setting was changed, restart when prompted and test Windows Update. If it reports that no change was made, retain that result for escalation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to System, then Troubleshoot, and choose Other troubleshooters.
  3. Find Windows Update and select Run.
  4. Apply any recommendation that matches the reported problem, restart if requested, and try Check for updates again.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Update & Security, then Troubleshoot.
  3. Open Additional troubleshooters, select Windows Update, and choose Run the troubleshooter.
  4. Follow the result, restart when appropriate, and test Windows Update again.

The labels can differ slightly by Windows build. Use the Windows Update troubleshooter offered in your installed version instead of downloading an unofficial troubleshooting program. If Settings cannot open the troubleshooter, return to Services and record the state of Windows Update before seeking help.

How do I reset the Windows Update cache?

A damaged or incomplete update cache can keep the service from completing a download. Microsoft’s documented sequence is to stop Windows Update, delete the contents of its cache folder, start the service again, and retry. Delete the contents of the folder, not the parent folder itself.

  1. Press Win + R, enter services.msc, and select OK.
  2. Locate Windows Update, open Properties, and select Stop. Leave the Services window open.
  3. Open File Explorer and go to C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution.
  4. Delete the files and subfolders inside SoftwareDistribution. Do not delete the SoftwareDistribution folder itself.
  5. Return to Services, open Windows Update again, and select Start.
  6. Restart the PC, open Windows Update, and select Check for updates.

The next check may need to download update files again, so it can take longer than a normal check. Deleting the contents is not the same as uninstalling Windows Update; it removes cached material that Windows can retrieve again. If Windows reports that files are in use, confirm that Windows Update is stopped before trying to remove the contents. Do not repeatedly delete files while the service is running.

If you cannot stop the service or lack permission to change the folder, do not force the deletion; record the exact message and use administrator support. If the reset completes but the service will not restart, return to the Services procedure and document the new status instead of making undocumented registry changes.

How do I handle an upgrade or installation failure?

An upgrade can fail even after the service appears enabled. First determine the phase of failure: downloading, preparing, or installing. That context helps distinguish a service problem from a later setup failure. A download failure points back toward the service and cache; a preparation or installation failure may require the broader Windows Update component reset recommended by Microsoft.

  1. Return to services.msc and confirm that Windows Update is enabled and can be started manually.
  2. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter for your Windows version.
  3. If the update cache appears stuck, perform the controlled SoftwareDistribution reset described above.
  4. If setup still fails, reset the Windows Update components using Microsoft’s documented reset procedure for your Windows version.
  5. Keep the exact error text, the failure phase, and any service or permission message. Provide that information to Microsoft Support if the reset does not help.

Resetting components is more invasive than changing a startup setting, so do it only after verifying the code and trying the service and troubleshooter steps. Follow the procedure for the installed Windows version. Do not substitute random commands copied from an unrelated error page, and do not jump to undocumented registry edits because a setup failure is inconvenient. A policy-controlled service or a damaged installation can require a different repair, and unsupported changes can make later diagnosis harder.

Why can Microsoft Store downloads show this code?

The authoritative meaning of 0x80070422 remains a disabled or stopped Windows Update service, even when the message appears during a Store download. First determine whether all Store apps fail or only one. A single app may have an app-specific problem rather than a system-wide update-service failure. Test another app only after noting the original message so that you can distinguish a broad Store failure from one problematic download.

For a Store-wide failure, community troubleshooting guidance commonly checks these services in the Services console:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Windows Update
  • Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
  • Update Orchestrator Service
  • Delivery Optimization

Treat that list as additional troubleshooting guidance, not as a replacement for Microsoft’s definition of the code. Start with Windows Update, then note which related service is stopped, disabled, or refusing a change. Do not change every service at once; changing one setting at a time makes the result easier to interpret. If the device is managed, an administrator may have intentionally restricted those settings.

What if Windows will not let me change the service?

A refusal to change Startup type, a service that reverts to Disabled, or a message saying access is denied can indicate organizational policy or insufficient permissions. On a work or school computer, capture the exact wording and contact the administrator rather than bypassing the restriction. Administrators may have intentionally disabled update services for maintenance, testing, or centralized management.

On a personally owned PC, sign in with an account that has administrator rights and repeat the Services procedure. If Windows still blocks the change, keep the code, the service status, and the permission or startup error together when contacting Microsoft Support. Those details are more useful than reporting only that an update failed. If the error appears only on a managed network, mention that context as well.

Could a 0x80070422 pop-up be a scam?

Yes. A browser page can imitate Windows branding and display any HRESULT-like number. The message’s location is important evidence: a code inside Windows Settings, update history, or the Services console is different from text shown by a website. A page that claims a virus was found, starts an alarming countdown, or demands a telephone call is not proof that Windows generated the message.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Do not call a telephone number displayed by the page.
  • Do not enter payment information or give a stranger remote access.
  • Close the browser tab or window. If it will not close normally, close the browser through its standard Windows controls.
  • Open Windows Security from the Start menu rather than using a link in the pop-up.
  • Navigate to Microsoft Support yourself if you need official help.

A browser warning does not establish that Windows generated the code or that the PC has malware. Use Windows’ own settings and security tools to verify the problem. If Windows Update works normally when checked from Settings, the browser message should be treated as a web-safety incident, not as evidence to delete system folders.

Which remedy fits my situation?

Where you saw the message First action Next step if it fails
Windows Update or update history Set Windows Update to Automatic, start it, restart, and check for updates Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, then reset the update cache if needed
Upgrade or installation setup Confirm the service is enabled and record whether failure occurs during download, preparation, or installation Reset Windows Update components and escalate with the exact context
Microsoft Store Check whether all apps fail and verify Windows Update Check BITS, Update Orchestrator, and Delivery Optimization; involve an administrator when policy blocks changes
Work- or school-managed PC Record the permission or startup error Contact the organization’s administrator
Browser page demanding a call Close the page and do not provide access or payment Open Windows Security and reach Microsoft Support independently

This order compares remedies by location, service state, and invasiveness. A service check changes one Windows setting; a cache reset removes downloaded update material; a component reset is broader; and managed-device support may be required because local changes are blocked. Choose the narrowest action that matches the evidence.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

When should I escalate the problem?

Escalate when Windows Update remains disabled after the Services and troubleshooter checks, when the service cannot be changed because of policy, or when a component reset does not resolve an upgrade or installation failure. Include the exact code as displayed, the place where it appeared, the stage of the update, and any startup or permission error.

Do not describe the message only as 0X800070422 if the original screen actually showed 0x80070422. Correct transcription gives support a documented identifier to investigate; an extra zero may require a different diagnosis. For a managed computer, send the information to the organization’s help desk. For a personal computer, use Microsoft Support reached through its official site, not a number supplied by a browser alert.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you want an optional shortcut after trying the manual Windows steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address certain broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL issues, settings, temporary files, and other common Windows problems. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, offers a category-based free trial of at least two days before a paid subscription, complements antivirus rather than replacing it, and results vary; no tool repairs every crash.

Quick checklist

  1. Confirm that the code is 0x80070422, not 0X800070422.
  2. Identify whether it came from Windows, the Store, upgrade setup, a managed device, or a browser.
  3. In services.msc, set Windows Update to Automatic and start it if stopped.
  4. Restart, then select Check for updates.
  5. Run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter if the error remains.
  6. Stop Windows Update before deleting only the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution.
  7. For upgrades, record the download, preparation, or installation phase and reset components only when needed.
  8. Preserve permission and policy messages for an administrator or Microsoft Support.
  9. Ignore browser pages that demand money, a phone call, or remote access.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a company or school intentionally disable Windows Update?

Yes. A managed device can have service settings controlled by organizational policy rather than by a local user. An access-denied or policy message should be preserved and sent to the administrator instead of bypassed with registry changes.

What information should I include when asking Microsoft Support for help?

Send the complete code exactly as shown, where it appeared, whether the failure happened during downloading, preparing, or installing, and the Windows Update service’s status. Include any wording about permissions, startup failure, or a service reverting to Disabled.

Does seeing this number in a web browser prove that Windows is damaged?

No. Websites can display arbitrary text and imitate Windows dialogs. Verify the issue in Windows Settings, update history, Services, or Windows Security before taking any action.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will Windows Update work immediately after the cache reset?

The first check afterward may take longer because update files can need to be downloaded again. If the service will not restart or the same error returns, stop repeating the deletion and escalate with the recorded service message.

Is 0X800070422 the same as 0x80070422?

No. Letter case does not matter, but the extra zero changes the identifier. Copy the code from the original Windows screen and confirm the complete wording before applying the documented 0x80070422 procedure.

Do I need administrator rights to start Windows Update?

Changing Startup type, starting or stopping the service, and deleting cache contents can require administrator permission. If Windows refuses the action, record the exact message rather than forcing it.

Should I delete the SoftwareDistribution folder itself?

No. Stop Windows Update first and delete only the files and subfolders inside C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. Leave the parent folder in place, then start the service and check for updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why check BITS, Update Orchestrator, and Delivery Optimization?

Community troubleshooting guidance checks those services when Store-wide downloads fail. They are related follow-up checks, while Microsoft’s documented meaning of 0x80070422 remains that Windows Update is disabled or stopped.

Is a repair utility required for this error?

No. The supported first steps are Windows service and update-cache procedures. An optional utility may be considered only after those steps fail; it does not replace Windows Security, Microsoft Support, or an organization’s administrator.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Verify the identifier first. For documented 0x80070422, set Windows Update to Automatic, start it, restart Windows, and check for updates. Then use the built-in troubleshooter and, if necessary, stop the service before clearing only the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. Upgrade failures, policy-controlled computers, and browser pop-ups need the appropriate escalation path rather than random registry edits or a phone call.
