The string win8 0X8007042 is probably an incomplete or mistyped Windows Firewall error. Microsoft documents the full code as 0x8007042c, which appears when the Windows Firewall service is disabled and can also appear when malware has interfered with Windows security services. Confirm the final character before changing anything: if your message does not end in c, stop and diagnose the complete code instead. For a confirmed 0x8007042c, scan for malware first, then turn on Windows Firewall, start the Windows Firewall and Base Filtering Engine services, and restart Windows. The Microsoft article that documents this sequence is archived and lists Windows 7, so its exact applicability to Windows 8 is not established.
What does error 0x8007042c mean?
Microsoft’s archived Knowledge Base article 2530126 describes 0x8007042c as a Windows Firewall startup error. In Microsoft’s wording, the message appears “if the Firewall service is disabled or if your computer is infected with malware.” The article was published on June 2, 2017, and its applicability table lists Windows 7 editions. That makes it useful historical guidance, but it does not by itself prove that every Windows 8 edition behaves identically.

The title you supplied contains 0x8007042, one hexadecimal character shorter than the documented code. The missing character is often the final c, but that is an inference from the matching Firewall error title, not a confirmed reading of your machine. A different last character can indicate a completely different Windows problem.
Is 0x8007042c dangerous?
The code is not, by itself, proof that a computer is infected. It indicates that Windows could not start or use the Firewall service normally. A disabled service, damaged service configuration, or malware interference can all produce the condition described by Microsoft. Because a stopped firewall changes the computer’s protection state, treat the message as a security issue until you have checked the service and completed a malware scan.

Do not download a random “DLL fixer,” registry cleaner, or preloaded recovery utility for this code. The documented repair is a malware check followed by Windows service and Firewall configuration. Unrelated cleaners can change service settings without showing you what was altered.
What should I check before changing Windows services?
- Write down the complete error text and code, including the final character.
- Save open work and connect the computer to reliable power if it is a portable device.
- Use an administrator account. Service startup settings and Firewall configuration require elevation.
- If you plan to use the advanced fallback later, create a restore point and make a backup of important files first.
- Note whether Windows reaches the desktop normally, whether the Firewall window opens, and whether the service status says Stopped or shows another error.
If the machine cannot reach the desktop, do not assume this procedure is the right one. The archived instructions are aimed at a system where Windows Firewall is the failing component; a broader startup failure needs separate recovery diagnostics.
How do I confirm that the code is really 0x8007042c?
- Reopen the dialog, notification, or event that displayed the error.
- Open its details or copy the text into a plain-text note so characters are not confused with an uppercase letter
O. - Check that the value has eight hexadecimal digits after
0xand ends inc:0x8007042c. - If the final character is missing, another character, or the code has a different length, do not apply the steps below. Search or troubleshoot the complete code instead.
Windows error codes are exact identifiers. Treating a different code as 0x8007042c can lead you to change services that are unrelated to the original failure.
How do I scan for malware before repairing the Firewall?
Microsoft’s archived procedure puts the malware scan first. It recommends downloading Microsoft Safety Scanner, running a Quick Scan, and allowing the scanner to remove any malware it detects. Follow the download and usage instructions in the archived Microsoft article: Microsoft Knowledge Base article 2530126.
- Download the scanner from Microsoft’s instructions, not from a third-party mirror.
- Run the downloaded tool with administrator permission.
- Choose Quick Scan when prompted.
- Allow the tool to remove detections, then restart Windows if it requests a restart.
- After Windows starts again, continue with the Firewall and service checks below.
Microsoft’s current documentation for the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) says it removes specific prevalent malware and explicitly states, “The MSRT does not replace an antivirus product.” The current page lists Windows 8.1 among supported operating systems, while the available archived Firewall article lists Windows 7. Therefore, the sources confirm the tool’s Windows 8.1 support but do not establish exact support for original Windows 8. Read the current requirements on Microsoft’s page before using MSRT: Microsoft’s MSRT documentation.

If the scan reports a detection, finish the removal and restart before testing the Firewall. If it reports nothing, continue anyway: a disabled service can produce the same documented error without a detection.

How do I turn Windows Firewall on in Windows 8?
Once the scan is complete, use Control Panel to enable the Firewall for every network location shown. The wording can vary slightly by edition, but the path is the classic Windows 8 Control Panel interface.
- Press the Windows key, type Control Panel, and open it.
- Select System and Security, then Windows Firewall.
- In the left pane, select Turn Windows Firewall on or off.
- For each listed network location, choose Turn on Windows Firewall.
- Apply the setting and close Control Panel.
If the page says that Windows Firewall cannot change some settings, leave that window open and proceed to the Services console. The service itself may be disabled or stopped, which must be corrected before the Control Panel switch can work.
How do I start the Windows Firewall service?
The archived Microsoft procedure instructs you to set the Windows Firewall service to start automatically and start it immediately if it is stopped.
- Press
Windows key + R, typeservices.msc, and press Enter. - If User Account Control asks for permission, choose Yes.
- In the Services list, locate Windows Firewall. On some Windows versions the underlying service is displayed as Windows Firewall even though newer documentation may refer to the firewall platform by another name.
- Double-click the entry and inspect Startup type.
- Set Startup type to Automatic.
- Check Service status. If it says Stopped, click Start.
- Select Apply, then OK.
If Start produces an error, record the exact wording and number. Do not repeatedly switch startup types or delete service registry entries; the error may be caused by a dependency or damaged configuration that needs the next check.

How do I start the Base Filtering Engine service?
Windows Firewall depends on the Base Filtering Engine (BFE). Microsoft’s sequence tells you to check BFE in the same Services console and start it if it is stopped.
- In
services.msc, locate Base Filtering Engine. - Double-click it and read the Service status.
- If the status is Stopped, click Start.
- Apply the change and close the properties dialog.
- Return to the Windows Firewall service and try Start again if it was still stopped.
- Restart Windows.
After the restart, open Control Panel’s Windows Firewall page again. Confirm that the Firewall is on for each network location and that the original error does not return. A restart matters because it tests whether both services can initialize during a normal Windows boot rather than only during a manual start.
What if Windows Firewall or BFE will not start?
Use the symptom to choose the next action rather than changing several settings at once.
The service is set to Disabled
Open its properties, change Startup type to Automatic, apply the setting, and then click Start. If the control is unavailable or immediately reverts, note the message and stop before editing the registry.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBFE starts but Firewall does not
Restart Windows and test the Firewall again. If it remains stopped, use the archived article’s associated-service procedure described in the advanced section below. Keep the exact service error because it will help determine whether the problem is a dependency or permissions issue.

Neither service starts
Run the malware scan again only if the first scan was interrupted or detections were not removed. Otherwise, preserve the error text, avoid downloading unofficial repair scripts, and escalate to Microsoft security support if the documented methods do not resolve the condition.
The Firewall page opens but still reports the code
Verify that both services show a running state after the restart. Then turn the Firewall off and on only through the Control Panel options, not by disabling the service. If the code returns, continue with the advanced fallback or support escalation.
Should I use the advanced associated-service repair?
Only use it when the code is confirmed as 0x8007042c, the malware scan is complete, and the normal Firewall and BFE steps did not work. The archived Microsoft article includes a batch-file sequence for related services. Because service names and commands must match the article exactly, open the archived KB instructions and follow that sequence verbatim rather than copying commands from an unrelated website.
- Create a restore point before running any batch file.
- Back up important documents and record the current service startup settings.
- Read the complete Microsoft sequence before executing the first command.
- Run only the commands supplied for this specific Firewall error, from an elevated Command Prompt as directed by the article.
- Stop immediately if a service name differs, a command is rejected, or the output reports a different failure than the article describes.
- Restart Windows and repeat the Firewall and BFE checks.
Do not combine this sequence with registry “optimizers,” permission-reset scripts, or third-party firewall replacements. Mixing repair procedures makes it difficult to identify which change caused a new problem and can leave security services in an unknown state.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 users know?
The wording in the title says “win8,” but the documented sources do not establish one uniform result for every Windows 8 release. The archived Firewall article’s applicability table lists Windows 7 editions. Microsoft’s current MSRT page lists Windows 8.1 as supported, but that is not confirmation for the original Windows 8 release.

When should I stop troubleshooting and get support?
Escalate when the complete code is different, Windows cannot reach the desktop, malware is detected but cannot be removed, or the Firewall and BFE services fail with errors not covered by the archived sequence. Microsoft’s archived procedure directs readers to Microsoft security support when the listed methods do not resolve the error.
Have the following ready for support:
- The exact code and full message, including the final character.
- Your Windows edition and whether it is Windows 8 or Windows 8.1.
- The scan result and whether any detections were removed.
- The startup type and status shown for Windows Firewall and Base Filtering Engine.
- Any service-start error text produced after the restart.
The available Microsoft sources publish no error frequency, repair-success rate, or average repair time. Be cautious of pages promising a guaranteed or 100 percent fix for this code.
As an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, and includes service-setting tweaks, cleanup, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredder, and crash logging. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; a free trial by category lasts at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
What are the most common mistakes with this error?
- Skipping code verification: applying a Firewall procedure to a different hexadecimal code can create a second problem.
- Scanning after changing services: Microsoft’s sequence places the malware scan first so that malicious interference is addressed before configuration changes.
- Starting only one service: Windows Firewall and Base Filtering Engine should both be checked, then Windows should be restarted.
- Using an unofficial script: service-repair batches from another error can alter unrelated components.
- Treating a removal scanner as full antivirus protection: Microsoft says MSRT targets specific prevalent malware and does not replace an antivirus product.
- Assuming Windows 8 and 8.1 are interchangeable: the cited sources establish different operating-system coverage, so verify the edition.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I fix 0x8007042c without reinstalling Windows?
Usually you should try the documented scan and service checks first. Reinstalling Windows is not part of Microsoft’s listed sequence and would erase applications and settings, so it should be considered only after support confirms that normal service repair cannot recover the installation.
Why does the Firewall turn off again after I restart?
A repeated stop suggests that the service configuration, a dependency, or malware interference is still unresolved. Record the startup status and exact service error after boot, then use the archived associated-service procedure or contact Microsoft security support instead of repeatedly toggling the switch.
Does this code affect network access immediately?
It can change how Windows filters network traffic, but the code alone does not tell you whether a connection is blocked or exposed. Check the Firewall status for each network location after the restart and avoid treating normal internet access as proof that the Firewall is working.
Recommended Free Tools
Is the missing final character always the letter c?
No. The inference comes from the documented Firewall code matching the shortened title. Verify the original dialog or event details; if the final character is anything other than lowercase or uppercase C, use that complete code for a separate diagnosis.
