If Windows shows 0x800704sd, first check the characters in the original dialog. The letter s is not valid in a hexadecimal Windows code; the closest documented identifier is 0x8007045D, which means “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.” That interpretation is likely, not certain, so compare the code with the dialog, Event Viewer entry or screenshot before applying these steps.
Error 0x8007045D is a symptom, not a diagnosis of one failed part. The problem can be the source or destination drive, SD card, optical disc, USB port, cable, adapter, card reader, storage driver or a device that disconnects during a transfer. Protect important files first, then change one part of the connection at a time to find the failing link.

Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhat does Windows error 0x8007045D mean?
0x8007045D is the Windows ERROR_IO_DEVICE condition: Windows could not complete a read or write request because an input/output device returned an error. It does not identify whether the source, destination or connection is defective.
The string in the title, 0x800704sd, cannot be a valid hexadecimal identifier because s is not a hexadecimal digit. A mistyped or misread 5 is a plausible explanation, but do not silently substitute it if your actual message contains another code. A different code requires that code’s own documentation and troubleshooting path.

People commonly encounter the likely code while copying files between an internal disk and an external disk, transferring data from an SD or microSD card, writing optical media, creating a backup, installing Windows, running Windows Update or restarting after a system failure. The trigger matters because a storage-transfer fault and a servicing failure are investigated differently.
How can I verify the exact code and what triggered it?
Record the complete message before changing anything. Note the exact characters, capitalization, the operation in progress and whether the error repeats with the same file or device.
- Reopen the dialog or screenshot and compare every character. Pay particular attention to
5versuss, and toDversus a visually similar character. - Write down whether the failure occurred during a file copy, backup, optical-disc burn, Windows installation, Windows Update or an unexpected restart.
- If the message is no longer visible, check the relevant Event Viewer entry and preserve the event text. Use the event’s code rather than relying on a typed search query.
- If the code is not
0x8007045D, stop using this article as a code-specific fix. Follow the documentation for the code actually displayed.
Do not confuse this I/O code with update codes such as 0x80070422. Similar-looking hexadecimal strings can represent unrelated Windows components.
What should I do before trying repairs?
Data protection comes before diagnosis. Repeated retries can turn an intermittent read problem into permanent loss, especially when a disk, flash card or USB drive is deteriorating.
- Stop writes to the suspect media. Do not repeatedly retry a failed copy, format the device or run repair operations before securing irreplaceable files.
- Copy the most important readable files to a known-good destination. Work in small batches if one large transfer fails.
- Keep the original media connected only as long as necessary. If it becomes unusually slow, disappears, clicks, disconnects or produces more errors, stop and consider professional data-recovery or hardware-manufacturer support.
- Record the original drive letter and which side of the transfer was reading or writing. This prevents running a repair command against the wrong volume.
A successful copy of some files does not prove that the whole device is healthy. It only shows that those particular reads and writes completed.
How do I isolate a bad cable, port, adapter or reader?
Change one variable at a time and repeat the same operation. If the error disappears when one connection component changes, that component or its interaction with the device becomes the leading suspect.

Try another USB port
Disconnect the external drive, card reader or adapter and connect it to a different USB port on the same computer. Avoid adding hubs or docking stations during the test. If one port fails while another works reliably, the original port, hub path or its power delivery may be involved.
Replace the cable or adapter
Use a known-good, compatible cable or adapter. A cable that powers a device can still have unreliable data lines, so “the drive lights up” is not a successful connectivity test.
Test the device on another computer
Connect the same drive, card or disc to another Windows computer and repeat a small, non-destructive read. If the error follows the media, suspect the media or its enclosure. If it occurs only on one computer, investigate that computer’s port, reader, driver or Windows installation.
Test SD media and the reader separately
For an SD or microSD transfer, test the card in another compatible reader and test the original reader with a different known-good card. This separates a failing card from a failing reader. A USB SD card reader is a controlled replacement test only; it is not a universal fix.
How do I determine whether the source or destination drive is failing?
For an internal-to-external copy, the error can result from difficulty reading the internal source or writing to the external destination. Use a small test file and vary one side at a time.
- Copy a file from the suspected source to a known-good destination. A failure here points toward source reads, the source volume or the connection used for the destination.
- Copy a known-good file from another location to the suspected destination. A failure here points toward destination writes, its cable, enclosure, port or volume.
- Repeat each test with a different cable or port, then on another computer if possible.
- Compare the results: a device that fails on multiple ports and computers is more likely to have a media or hardware fault than a single-port problem.
Do not infer health from a single successful transfer. Intermittent I/O faults can appear only with particular files, locations or sustained activity.

What should I check when an optical disc is involved?
Optical-media errors can involve the disc, the burner, compatibility or the selected writing speed. Try a different disc from a compatible type and verify that the burner supports the media.
- Use media known to work with the drive rather than repeatedly retrying the same disc.
- Check whether the selected burn speed is supported by both the burner and the disc.
- Test another blank disc to distinguish a defective disc from a drive problem.
- If multiple compatible discs fail in the same burner, investigate the drive and its connection rather than blaming every disc.
When should I run CHKDSK?
Run CHKDSK only after important readable data is safe and you have confirmed the affected volume’s real drive letter. CHKDSK can take a long time, and repair attempts are not a substitute for recovering files from media that is physically failing.

- Open Command Prompt with administrator privileges.
- Identify the affected volume’s letter in File Explorer. Do not assume it is
X:; that letter is only an example. - Run the command with the correct letter, for example
chkdsk /R X:. - Allow the check to finish without disconnecting the drive. Large or damaged volumes may take a long time.
- Retry the original operation once, then reassess if the error returns.
CHKDSK can address file-system problems, but it cannot repair a damaged cable, failing controller, worn flash memory or a disk that repeatedly disconnects. If the same device fails across ports and computers, stop escalating software repairs and seek recovery or manufacturer support.
What if Windows keeps crashing or restarting?
A recurring restart or stop-code crash is a broader Windows stability problem, even if one incident displayed an I/O error. Use the stop-code workflow rather than assuming the storage device is proven healthy.
- Remove hardware added shortly before the crashes, including external storage and expansion devices, and test whether the restarts stop.
- Start Windows in Safe Mode to determine whether the failure depends on normal startup drivers and services.
- Open Device Manager and check for devices marked with a warning icon. Investigate recently changed storage, chipset or USB hardware first.
- Check that the system volume has adequate free space. A nearly full system disk can interfere with updates, logs and temporary operations.
- Install current Windows updates that are offered for your edition, then restart and retest.
- Use System Restore when the problem began after a driver, application or configuration change and a suitable restore point exists.
These steps address repeated system crashes; they do not certify that an external drive, SD card or other storage device is reliable.
What if 0x8007045D appears during Windows Update?
Do not treat every update failure as a removable-drive problem. Windows Update has its own troubleshooting path covering services, update cache, connectivity and update-specific codes.

- Record the exact update error and whether the failure occurs on every update or one package.
- Use Windows Update troubleshooting for the installed Windows edition and follow its service and cache checks.
- Disconnect nonessential external storage and peripherals during the update, then retry from a stable connection.
- If the code changes, use the new code’s documentation rather than forcing the original interpretation.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. In 2026, a Windows 10 system may not receive the same current update support as a supported Windows release; account for that lifecycle status when deciding whether an update problem is expected to receive a current fix.
What if the error appears during Windows setup?
Setup failures can come from disconnected peripherals, driver conflicts or invalid or corrupted installation data. Use setup-specific guidance instead of assuming the installation media or destination disk is the only cause.
- Disconnect nonessential USB devices, external drives, printers and other peripherals before restarting setup.
- Reconnect only the keyboard, mouse and installation media required to complete setup.
- Investigate driver conflicts, especially when setup fails after hardware was changed.
- Try a clean boot when existing startup software may be interfering with setup.
- Verify that the installation source is valid and not corrupted. If Windows component corruption is suspected, Microsoft’s documented repair tools include Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) and System File Checker (SFC).
Run software repair only after protecting personal data. A setup error that follows the same disk or installation media to another computer may indicate a physical or media problem instead.
Which result points to which fault?
| Observation | Likely fault layer | Best next action |
|---|---|---|
| Only one cable, port or adapter fails | Cable, USB port, hub or adapter path | Replace that connection component and retest |
| The same SD card fails in several readers | Card or its contents | Stop writes, copy readable files and seek recovery or replacement |
| Several cards fail in one reader | Reader, adapter or reader connection | Test a replacement reader and another USB port |
| An external drive fails on multiple computers | Drive, enclosure or media | Prioritize data recovery and manufacturer support |
| Only one computer fails while the device works elsewhere | Local port, driver or Windows installation | Inspect Device Manager, updates and system repair options |
| Failure occurs only during Windows Update or setup | Windows servicing, cache, connectivity, driver or installation data | Use the update or setup-specific workflow |
When should I stop troubleshooting and replace hardware?
Escalate when the error follows the same drive, card or disc across different ports and computers, when the device repeatedly disconnects, or when readable data is becoming harder to copy. Continued writes, formatting or repeated repair scans can reduce the chance of recovery.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor irreplaceable files, use a qualified data-recovery service before experimenting further. For a device still under warranty, contact its manufacturer and preserve the exact error, test results and drive identifier. Replace a cable, reader or adapter only after controlled tests point to that component; replacing random parts can hide the real fault and risks more handling of failing media.
If you prefer an optional automated shortcut after trying the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address certain common Windows issues, adjust system settings, clean temporary and cache files, check selected Windows vulnerabilities and record app crashes. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary, and no tool repairs every crash. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, with a free trial by category of at least two days before a paid subscription.

Can a bad file alone cause this error?
Yes, a particular unreadable sector or damaged file can make a transfer fail while other files still copy. Test several small files and preserve the readable data before attempting repairs.
Will changing the drive letter fix 0x8007045D?
Changing a letter does not repair a failing device or connection. It is useful only when a command is pointed at the wrong volume; always confirm the actual letter before running CHKDSK.
Why does the error disappear after reconnecting the drive?
Reconnects can temporarily restore a marginal cable, port, reader or device connection. Treat that as an intermittent warning, not proof of a permanent fix, and complete a cross-port or cross-computer test while the device is still readable.
