Windows Error Code 43 means a device driver told Windows that its device failed. The message—“Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)”—does not by itself prove that the hardware is permanently dead. Start by identifying the exact device and recording its status message, then update or roll back the driver, reinstall it, and follow the device maker’s diagnostics. Graphics adapters may require a clean installation of the computer manufacturer’s driver. If those software steps do not clear the code, persistent failure can point to a device or hardware problem that needs manufacturer support.
The safest fix depends on the device class, model, driver version, and what changed immediately before the error. The sequence below works from the least disruptive checks to device-specific diagnostics without assuming that every Code 43 report has the same cause.

Code 43 is a device-status report from the driver. Microsoft describes it as a Device Manager error in which “a driver has reported a device failure.” Windows then stops the device rather than allowing a driver that has declared a problem to continue operating.
The code can appear on a graphics adapter, USB device, network adapter, Bluetooth radio, printer, storage controller, audio device, or another class of hardware. The number is therefore not a diagnosis of one particular component. Device Manager’s device name, manufacturer, driver details, and complete status text are more useful than the code alone.

A yellow warning icon beside a device in Device Manager indicates a problem status. Opening Properties exposes the General, Driver, Details, and Events tabs. Those tabs show which device Windows is talking about, which driver package is installed, and whether the failure began after a recent change.
How should I identify the device before changing anything?
Record the device and its current state first. That information determines whether a graphics-specific, driver-specific, or hardware-specific remedy is appropriate and gives a manufacturer’s support team something precise to work with.
- Open Start, search for Device Manager, and launch it.
- Expand the category containing the yellow warning icon. Common categories include Display adapters, Universal Serial Bus controllers, Network adapters, Bluetooth, Sound, video and game controllers, and Printers.
- Right-click the affected device and choose Properties.
- On the General tab, copy the complete Device status message, not just “Code 43.”
- On the Driver tab, note the driver provider, date, and version. Also record the device name and manufacturer shown by Windows.
- Check the Events tab for the time the device was configured, started, stopped, or reported a problem. If the error appeared immediately after a driver update, firmware change, or hardware move, write that down.
Do not uninstall an unknown device before recording this information. If the device disappears after a failed change, its manufacturer and model details can be difficult to recover from the affected computer alone.
Which Code 43 fix should I try first?
Use the recent-change and device-specific clues to choose the least disruptive next action. The table is a decision guide, not a replacement for the complete procedure that follows.

How do I update the driver through Device Manager?
Updating is the normal first software test when there is no clear reason to undo a recent change.
- In Device Manager, right-click the Code 43 device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and choose Update Driver.
- Select Search automatically for updated driver software.
- Allow Windows to complete the search and installation. Follow any restart instruction it displays.
- Return to Properties and read Device status again.
If Windows says the best driver is already installed but Code 43 remains, that result only means Windows did not find a newer suitable package through its search. It does not establish that the installed package is healthy or correct for every model. Go to the official support page for the computer or device manufacturer, identify the exact model, and follow that page’s installation instructions. Avoid choosing a package for a similar model or a different operating-system edition.

Keep the installer and the driver version you replaced until the device has been tested. If the new package makes the problem worse, having the previous version available makes a rollback less difficult.
When should I roll back the driver?
Use Roll Back Driver when Code 43 started after a driver update or driver-management change. Rolling back tests a specific cause; it is not a general substitute for updating when no recent change occurred.
- Open the affected device’s Properties dialog in Device Manager.
- Select the Driver tab.
- Choose Roll Back Driver. If Windows asks why, select the reason that best describes the recent change.
- Complete the prompt and restart if Windows requests it.
- Reopen the device’s Properties and check the status message.
The button can be unavailable when Windows has no previous driver package to restore. In that case, use the manufacturer’s current package or proceed to an uninstall and hardware rescan rather than trying to force a rollback.
How do I uninstall and reinstall a Code 43 device?
Microsoft lists uninstalling the device and scanning for hardware changes as the general Code 43 resolution. This removes the current device registration so Windows can detect it again and rebuild the entry.
- Open Device Manager and locate the device with the warning icon.
- Right-click it and choose Uninstall. Confirm the removal.
- In Device Manager, select the computer name at the top of the device tree.
- Open the Action menu and choose Scan for hardware changes.
- Wait for Windows to rediscover the device and reinstall its driver.
- Open the device’s Properties and read the complete status message.
Do not remove a driver package or related software that belongs to another device unless the manufacturer’s instructions specifically require it. The general procedure is to remove the affected device entry, rescan, and then verify the resulting status. If Windows rediscovers the hardware but immediately returns Code 43, use the exact model’s official driver and diagnostic instructions.
What should I do after reinstalling the driver?
Restart the computer when the installer or Windows requests it, then check the device again instead of assuming that a completed installation fixed the failure.

- Expand the device’s category and open Properties.
- Confirm that the Device status text says This device is working properly.
- Test the function that failed, such as displaying an image, connecting to a network, pairing Bluetooth, printing, or recognizing a USB device.
- If the status still reports Code 43, note whether the device name, driver version, or event entries changed. That comparison helps the manufacturer distinguish a package problem from a device fault.
A status change without normal operation is also significant. For example, if the warning disappears but a peripheral still fails, record the new symptom and follow the manufacturer’s troubleshooting path for that model rather than repeatedly reinstalling the same package.
How do I fix Code 43 on a graphics adapter?
Graphics adapters need a manufacturer-specific approach because Intel documents Code 43 as potentially caused by hardware problems or by driver and settings corruption. Use the latest graphics driver supplied by the computer or system manufacturer, not merely a package for a similar adapter.

- Identify the exact graphics adapter and the computer model in Device Manager and its Properties dialog.
- Download the graphics driver from the computer manufacturer’s official support page, following its model and operating-system selections.
- Disconnect the computer from the internet before installing, as Intel advises. This prevents Windows from immediately replacing the package while the clean installation is in progress.
- Run the manufacturer’s clean-install option, if its installer provides one, and follow every restart instruction.
- Reconnect to the internet only after the installation is complete and the adapter’s Device status has been checked.
- If Code 43 remains, use the system manufacturer’s graphics diagnostics and support process. A persistent result can require hardware service rather than another driver package.
Do not infer that a graphics card must be replaced solely from the number 43. The clean installation is a controlled way to separate driver or settings corruption from a fault that remains with the exact adapter.
What if Code 43 affects USB, network, Bluetooth, audio, or another device?
There is no universal accessory or replacement that solves Code 43 across device classes. Apply the standard driver sequence, then use the instructions for the exact model and connection type.
USB devices
Record the full device name and the USB controller category in which it appears. Update or reinstall the affected entry, then test the device again according to its manufacturer’s instructions. If the error follows the device to another compatible computer, that comparison is useful evidence for the manufacturer; do not treat it as a definitive hardware test on its own.
Network and Bluetooth adapters
Use the computer or adapter manufacturer’s package, because the correct driver can depend on the exact wireless or wired chipset and system model. If a recent driver change preceded Code 43, rollback is the targeted test; otherwise update first, then uninstall and rescan if necessary.

Audio, printer, and other peripherals
Capture the provider, date, version, and status text before changing the entry. Install only the package identified for the exact device and follow the manufacturer’s diagnostic sequence if the status remains stopped. A generic driver for a different model can leave the device present while preserving the failure.
Can I inspect Code 43 from the command line?
Yes, but command-line inspection is optional. Microsoft Learn documents pnputil /enum-devices /instanceid <device instance path> for displaying device information when you already know the device instance path.
- In Device Manager, open the device’s Properties and select the Details tab.
- Choose the property that provides the device instance path and copy its value exactly.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt if your account requires elevation.
- Run
pnputil /enum-devices /instanceid <device instance path>, replacing the angle-bracketed text with the copied path. - Compare the reported status and identity with what Device Manager shows.
pnputil in this procedure is an inspection method, not a guaranteed repair. Most people can obtain the information they need from the Properties dialog, and changing driver packages from the command line without model-specific instructions can create a second problem.
How can I tell whether Code 43 is a driver problem or a hardware problem?
No single screen can make that distinction for every device. Use the sequence of changes and the manufacturer’s diagnostics as evidence.

Provide support with the device name, manufacturer, model, driver provider, driver date and version, complete Device status text, relevant Events entries, and the steps that changed the result. Mention whether the problem began after an update and whether a clean installation was attempted for a graphics adapter. This prevents support from repeating generic steps and helps determine whether the device needs a model-specific repair or replacement.
