“0x8007” is only the beginning of a Windows Update error, not a complete code. The final four hexadecimal characters determine whether you are dealing with a missing file, damaged update cache, denied permissions, a disabled service, a timeout, or component-store corruption. Open Windows Update history or the failure dialog and copy the entire value, such as 0x80070002 or 0x80070422.
Start by restarting Windows, running the Windows Update troubleshooter, checking free storage, and trying the update again. If it still fails, use the matching procedure below; applying the wrong repair can waste time or change settings that are unrelated to your error.

What does “Update 0x8007 Failed” actually mean?
The prefix 0x8007 identifies a family of Windows status codes. It does not tell you which Windows Update operation failed. Windows can display different suffixes on different attempts, and Settings labels can vary between Windows releases, so record the complete code together with your Windows version when you ask for help.

How do I find the complete Windows Update code?
- Open Settings and go to Windows Update.
- Open Update history and locate the failed update. If the failure dialog is still open, you can copy the code from there instead.
- Copy every character, including the
0xprefix and all eight hexadecimal digits. Do not report only0x8007. - Note your Windows edition and version. Those details matter because available Settings labels and recovery options differ by release.
If the history entry shows more than one failure, use the code from the most recent attempt first. Keep earlier codes as well; a change can show that Windows progressed to a different stage rather than that the original information was incorrect.
What should I try before a code-specific repair?
These low-risk checks address the common causes Microsoft lists for update-installation failures and should be completed before changing services or repairing the component store.
- Restart Windows. Choose Start > Power > Restart, allow the sign-in process to finish, and wait until the desktop is responsive.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter. In Settings, search for “Windows Update troubleshooter,” launch the matching troubleshooter for your Windows release, apply any recommended action, and restart if it requests one.
- Check available space on the Windows drive. An upgrade needs at least 16 GB free for a 32-bit installation or 20 GB for a 64-bit installation according to Microsoft’s stated requirements. These are minimum upgrade figures, not a guarantee that every update will install with exactly that amount.
- Retry the update. Return to Windows Update, select Check for updates, and install the same update again. Record the new complete code if it fails.
If the drive is too small for an upgrade, Microsoft says a USB drive may be required to provide additional storage. Extra storage can help an upgrade that cannot stage its files, but it does not repair denied permissions, disabled services, or corrupted component files.

How do I fix 0x80070002, 0x80070003 or 0x80070057?
Microsoft groups these three values as Windows Update installation failures. Complete the first-pass sequence above—restart, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, verify the required free space for your architecture, and retry. For 0x80070002 specifically, the underlying Windows status means “The system cannot find the file specified,” so a missing or unavailable update file is consistent with the code.

If the same code returns, capture the full code, update name or KB identifier shown in history, Windows edition and version, and the amount of free space. That record distinguishes a repeatable installation failure from a one-time interruption and gives support enough information to select the next repair.
How do I clear a damaged Windows Update cache for 0x8007000d?
0x8007000d is associated with damaged Windows Update files or cache. Stop the service before removing cache contents; otherwise files may remain locked or the service may immediately recreate partial data.

Microsoft identifies 0x80070422 with a disabled or stopped Windows Update service. The repair is a service configuration change, not a cache deletion.

If DISM cannot complete, record its final message and the complete update code. A missing repair source may require installation media or another recovery path; repeatedly running the same command without addressing the reported source will not supply one.

- Back up important documents, saved games, photographs and other irreplaceable data to a separate location.

A USB drive can supply storage or installation media for an upgrade or recovery, depending on the path you choose. It does not, by itself, correct permissions, start a disabled service, or rebuild corrupted component files.
What information should I include when asking for help?
A useful troubleshooting report contains the complete hexadecimal code—not just 0x8007—along with the Windows version and edition, the update name, the amount of free space, and which procedure you already completed.
