How do I clear the Windows Update cache?
Resetting the cache is appropriate when update files are corrupt or a download remains stuck. It is more involved than a restart, but it does not reinstall Windows.
Use the supported graphical procedure
- Press
Windows + R, enterservices.msc, and press Enter. - Find Windows Update in the services list, right-click it, and select Stop.
- Open File Explorer and navigate to
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. - Delete the contents of that folder, not the parent
Windowsdirectory. If a file is in use, confirm that Windows Update has stopped and close applications that may be accessing it. - Return to

This procedure requires an administrator Command Prompt. Run each command separately and wait for it to finish:

- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter once more, then retry the KB update.
Do not use this procedure from a standard, non-elevated prompt. If a rename reports access denied, stop and verify administrator access rather than applying random registry edits.
