If Windows Update reports 0x80070057, the code means “The parameter is incorrect.” The title’s 0x800700057 has an extra zero and does not match Microsoft’s Windows Update code tables. - Save open work and connect the PC to reliable power. Do not interrupt a repair command or restart while it is still reporting progress.
- Confirm that the system drive has enough free space for the update and temporary repair files. Disk Cleanup is part of Microsoft’s upgrade guidance for this code.
- Record the Windows edition and build, the failing KB number, the exact code and the time of the failure. Keep this information if you later contact support.

How do I run the Windows Update troubleshooter?
The built-in troubleshooter is the lowest-risk first repair. It checks common update configuration and service conditions without requiring manual edits to protected permissions.
- In Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Follow each recommended action, allow the tool to apply a change when prompted, and restart if it requests one.

Run Disk Cleanup
- Open Start, type Disk Cleanup, and launch the desktop utility.
- Select the Windows system drive, normally C:, and let the calculation finish.
- Review categories such as temporary files and previously downloaded update files. Select only items you understand, then choose OK and confirm deletion.
- Restart Windows and retry the update.
Check the drive
Use Windows’ drive-check option from the drive’s properties or the repair prompt shown by Windows. If it schedules a check for the next restart, accept the schedule and allow it to complete. A drive check can take time and may require a reboot; do not force the PC off while it is running.
How do I repair Windows with DISM and SFC?
Run the image repair first and the protected-file check second. Microsoft explains that DISM provides the files required to repair corrupted Windows files, so reversing the order can leave SFC without a healthy repair source.
- Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthDISM normally obtains repair files through Windows Update. Let the command finish; the percentage can pause for an extended period. Keep the window open until DISM reports completion or a specific error.

- In the same elevated window, run:
sfc /scannowDo not close Command Prompt until SFC reaches 100 percent. SFC checks protected system files and repairs files it can match to a valid source.
- Restart Windows after both commands finish, then retry the failed update from Windows Update.
If DISM completes but SFC reports that it could not repair every file, restart and test Windows Update once. If the update still fails, preserve the command output and continue with the cache reset and interference checks rather than repeatedly running the same command without a new symptom.
What if DISM says the source files cannot be found?
That message means the normal repair source is unavailable or damaged. Microsoft documents an alternate repair source such as another Windows installation, a network share, removable media or a dedicated repair folder.
- Obtain a repair source that matches the installed Windows edition and system architecture. A source for a different edition can fail or repair the wrong component set.
- Connect the source or make its repair folder available, then identify its path. The example below assumes
C:RepairSourceWindows. - In an elevated Command Prompt, run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccessThe /LimitAccess switch tells DISM not to use Windows Update while it repairs from the specified location. Replace the example path with the actual source path, keeping the edition and architecture aligned with the installed system.

For an upgrade or installation failure where no usable repair files are available, Microsoft lists Windows installation media or the Media Creation Tool as a conditional escalation. Use that route only after confirming the source requirement and making a backup of important files.
How do I reset the Windows Update cache?
Resetting the update cache targets downloaded update data and the Windows Update service. It is more reversible than changing registry or file permissions because it does not require permission edits.

services.msc, and press Enter. - In the Services window, locate Windows Update, right-click it and choose Stop. Leave the Services window open.
- Open File Explorer and browse to
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. - Delete the contents inside that folder. Do not delete unrelated folders elsewhere in
C:Windows. - Return to Services, right-click Windows Update and choose Start.
- Restart the PC, open Windows Update and retry the same update.
If a file is in use and cannot be deleted, verify that the Windows Update service is stopped and close other update-related windows. Do not proceed to permission changes merely to force deletion; first restart and repeat the controlled stop-and-clear sequence.
Could a VPN, security program or background app be blocking setup?
Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance recommends removing common environmental interference for a test. This does not prove that security software is defective; it isolates whether another process is preventing the update from completing.
- Disconnect the VPN before starting the update attempt.
- Temporarily pause a third-party antivirus or firewall only for the troubleshooting attempt, using its own pause or disable control.
- Close unnecessary programs, especially those that monitor files, disk activity or system changes.
- Retry the update, then immediately re-enable your security protection and reconnect the VPN if the update still fails.
If the update succeeds only with background software disabled, perform a clean boot and re-enable services and startup items in groups to identify the conflict. Keep a record of each change so the normal startup configuration can be restored.
How is 0x80070005 access denied different?
Do not apply the 0x80070057 parameter-error sequence as a substitute for permissions diagnosis. Microsoft identifies 0x80070005 as E_ACCESSDENIED, a general access-denied error that can result from changed file-system or registry permissions.
Confirm administrator access
Make sure you are using an administrator account or can approve an administrator prompt. Some updates require administrator access even when Windows Update itself is visible to a standard user.
Use CBS.log to identify the denied item
- Open File Explorer and browse to
%Windir%LogsCBSCBS.log. - Open the log and search for

- Identify the file or registry key reported as denied before making any permission change.
Changing permissions without identifying the exact denied object can create a new servicing problem. If the log does not clearly identify the item, preserve the log and the update-history code for support instead of applying broad ownership or access changes.

When should I escalate a recurring failure?
